Seaside Serenity and Sunset Cocktails

Today was all about surrendering to the rhythm of Naxos, letting the island's natural beauty and laid-back vibe dictate my pace. After a delightful first day exploring the town, I was eager to discover more of what this Cycladic gem had to offer. So, with my camera and notebook in tow, I set out to explore the beaches and flavors of Naxos.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Scirocco Restaurant in Naxos Town. The family-run establishment had a cozy, welcoming feel, almost like a summer picnic, with its black and white plaid tablecloths and green plants. I savored a traditional Greek yogurt with honey and walnuts, fueling up for a day of exploration. I made a mental note to try their take on Saganaki with Naxos hard cheese, sesame seeds and thyme-infused honey another time.

With a full stomach and a sense of adventure, I headed towards Mikri Vigla Beach, known for its golden sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters. The drive itself was a treat, with panoramic views of the coastline. As I approached Mikri Vigla, I could see windsurfers and kitesurfers dancing across the waves. The wind was definitely up, living up to Mikri Vigla's reputation as a windsurfing paradise.

I decided to explore both sides of Mikri Vigla. The northern part, Parthena, was indeed a hub of activity with windsurfers skillfully maneuvering their kites. I watched in awe as they caught the wind, soaring through the air with effortless grace. The southern part, Limanaki, offered a more tranquil experience, with a long sandy coast perfect for sunbathing and walking. I strolled along the shore, feeling the soft sand between my toes and the gentle breeze on my face. October is such a pleasant time to be here; the temperatures are mild, and the sea is still warm enough for a swim. I even saw some small fishes in the transparent waters.

The beauty of Naxos lies not just in its stunning landscapes, but in its ability to make you feel completely at peace.

After soaking up the sun and sea at Mikri Vigla, I felt a pang of hunger. It was time for lunch, and I had heard great things about To Elliniko Restaurant. Located in Naxos Town, this family restaurant is known for its traditional Naxian recipes cooked with local products. I decided to try their famous rabbit stew with onions, a dish that came highly recommended. The rabbit was tender and flavorful, and the onions added a touch of sweetness. The charmingly lighted inner garden created a relaxing atmosphere.

With my appetite satisfied, I decided to explore Kalamitsia, a deserted Jesuit Monastery located near the village of Melanes. The drive to Kalamitsia was an adventure in itself, with narrow dirt roads leading to the site. As I approached the monastery, I was struck by its imposing presence, even in its ruined state.

The monastery, also known as the Jesuit Palace, was built in 1673 as a summer retreat for Jesuit monks. Its elegant design and lavish style were quite controversial at the time, as they seemed to contradict the monks' supposed austere lifestyle. I wandered through the ruins, imagining what life must have been like within those walls centuries ago. The chapel, though modest, still exuded a sense of serenity. I carefully climbed the central staircase to the roof terrace, where I was rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding valley.

As the sun began to set, I made my way back to Naxos Town, eager to experience the island's nightlife. I had heard whispers about The Rum Bar, a cocktail bar known for its creative concoctions and lively atmosphere. I settled in at the bar, ordered one of their signature rum cocktails, and watched as the bartender expertly mixed the ingredients. The drink was a delightful blend of flavors, a perfect complement to the stunning sunset unfolding before me. Sipping my cocktail, I reflected on the day's adventures. From the windswept beaches of Mikri Vigla to the historic ruins of Kalamitsia, Naxos had captivated me with its beauty and charm. The friendly locals, the delicious food, and the vibrant atmosphere made me feel right at home.

For dinner, I ventured to Taverna Axiotissa, located in Kastraki. This taverna is known for its modern twists on traditional Greek dishes, using fresh, local ingredients. I decided to try their famous mushroom dish, which was absolutely divine. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, offering excellent recommendations. The atmosphere was welcoming and bustling, making it a perfect spot to end the day.

As I walked back to my hotel, the Korali Garden Hotel, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this incredible journey. Naxos had exceeded all my expectations, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, rich history, and vibrant culture. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to explore the Bazeos Tower and the Sanctuary of the Source-Flerio. But for now, I'll drift off to sleep, dreaming of sun-kissed beaches and ancient ruins.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Bazeos Tower and the Sanctuary of the Source-Flerio. Before that, I'll grab breakfast at Irini's Restaurant. For lunch, I'm thinking of trying Typografio Restaurant, and dinner will be at Labyrinth Wine Restaurant. I'm also hoping to do some shopping at Fish & Olive, art of the Aegean.

It's worth noting that the weather in Naxos during October is generally pleasant, with daytime temperatures around 21°C. However, there is a chance of rain, so it's always a good idea to pack a light jacket or umbrella. The sea temperature is also around 21°C, making it perfect for swimming. I'm so glad I decided to come to Naxos in October; it's the perfect time to enjoy the island's beauty without the crowds.

As I reflect on my day, I realize that one thing I forgot to pack was a reusable water bottle. It's so important to stay hydrated, especially when you're out exploring in the sun. I'll definitely make sure to buy one tomorrow. For now, though, it's time to rest and recharge for another day of adventures in Naxos. Goodnight from Naxos!
