A Journey Through Time in Guimarães

Today marked the beginning of our Portuguese adventure, and what better place to start than in Guimarães, the very birthplace of Portugal? As a geriatric nurse with a penchant for history, I was eager to step back in time and explore the medieval wonders of this UNESCO World Heritage site. Hans, ever the supportive and curious companion, was right there with me, ready to soak in the atmosphere and capture the beauty of this historic city.

Our day began bright and early with breakfast at a Cozinha por António Loureiro. The Michelin-starred restaurant was a treat. Chef António Loureiro focuses on local and sustainable ingredients, some of which come from the restaurant's herb garden on the terrace. After a hearty meal, we set off to explore the iconic Guimarães Castle.

It was a beautiful morning, perfect for wandering around the ancient stone walls.

Guimarães Castle: A Bastion of History

The Guimarães Castle is the principal medieval castle in the municipality Guimarães, in the northern region of Portugal. The castle is closely linked to the military history of the kingdom’s foundation. It was built in the 10th century under the orders of Mumadona Dias to defend the monastery from attacks by Moors and Norsemen. Walking through its sturdy walls, I couldn't help but imagine the countless battles fought here, the sieges endured, and the pivotal role it played in shaping Portugal's destiny. The architecture, a blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles, was truly impressive. Hans, with his engineer's mind, was fascinated by the structural design and the way the castle was strategically built on a small hill made of granite.

Climbing the keep offered a panoramic view of Guimarães. From up high, the city unfolded beneath us, a tapestry of terracotta rooftops, lush green spaces, and winding streets. It was easy to see why this location was chosen as a defensive stronghold. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the whispers of centuries past. I could almost hear the echoes of knights and royalty, their stories etched into the very stones beneath our feet. The castle is definitely a must-see for anyone visiting Guimarães.

The stones of Guimarães whisper tales of courage, resilience, and the birth of a nation.

Palace of the Dukes of Braganza: A Glimpse into Royal Life

Next on our itinerary was the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza, a short walk from the castle.

This palace offered a stark contrast to the ruggedness of the castle. The Palace of the Dukes of Braganza is a medieval estate and former residence of the first Dukes of Braganza, located in the historical centre of Guimarães. It was built in the 15th century by Afonso, Count of Barcelos, the illegitimate son of John I of Portugal.

Stepping inside was like entering a different world. The opulent interiors, adorned with intricate tapestries, period furniture, and exquisite artwork, gave us a glimpse into the lives of Portuguese royalty. The Burgundian architectural style, with its crenellated towers and imposing façade, was a testament to the power and prestige of the Dukes of Braganza. Hans was particularly impressed by the tapestries depicting scenes from Portuguese history, while I was captivated by the delicate porcelain and the ornate details of the furniture. The palace was restored between 1937 and 1959 and opened as a museum in 1959.

Wandering through the various rooms, each more lavish than the last, I couldn't help but compare it to the simpler, more practical life I lead as a nurse. Yet, I also appreciated the artistry and craftsmanship that went into creating such a magnificent space. It was a reminder of the diverse facets of human history, from the brutal realities of warfare to the refined elegance of courtly life.

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira: A Spiritual Sanctuary

Our final stop of the day was the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira, a church with a rich history dating back to the 10th century.

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira is located in the heart of Guimarães. The original monastery was founded by Countess Mumadona Dias. The church has gained prominence as a significant religious center on the Iberian Peninsula.

The church's architecture is a blend of styles, reflecting the various reconstructions it has undergone over the centuries. The tranquil atmosphere inside was a welcome respite from the bustling city streets. I lit a candle and took a moment to reflect on the day's experiences, feeling grateful for the opportunity to explore such a historically significant site. Hans, though not particularly religious, appreciated the serenity of the space and the intricate details of the religious artwork.

Legend says that the church is named after an ancient olive tree that stood on the site. According to local lore, the tree miraculously revived and blossomed overnight after being cut down. The Cross of Raimundo commemorates this miracle.

A Taste of Portugal: Lunch at Taberna Trovador

For lunch, we chose Taberna Trovador, a charming restaurant near the Igreja de São Francisco.

This laid-back tavern served a mix of traditional dishes. We enjoyed sampling local specialties, such as chicken gizzards, pork cheeks and tomato rice, while soaking in the lively atmosphere. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to savor the flavors of Portugal. It was the perfect place to recharge before continuing our exploration.

Sweet Endings: Dinner at Cor de Tangerina

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Cor de Tangerina for dinner.

The restaurant was known for its cozy ambiance and delicious Portuguese cuisine. We savored each bite, reminiscing about the day's adventures and planning our itinerary for tomorrow. The staff was friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

Shopping for Memories at Alma Portuguesa

Before dinner, we stopped by Alma Portuguesa, a local shop recommended by several locals.

Alma Portuguesa sells only Portuguese products. From ceramics to textiles, each item reflected the country's rich cultural heritage. I picked up a few small souvenirs for my colleagues back in Heidelberg, while Hans found a beautiful hand-painted tile to add to his collection. Supporting local artisans and bringing a piece of Portugal back home felt like a meaningful way to end the day.

Final Thoughts on Day 1

As we walked back to Hotel De Guimaraes, our hearts were full of gratitude and excitement for the days to come.

Guimarães had exceeded all our expectations, immersing us in its rich history, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality. I already feel so connected to this place. The Let's Do It! Festival 2025 is also taking place in Guimarães. It has been an incredible start to our Portuguese adventure, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, with our planned visits to Museum Martins Sarmento, Museum Casa da Memória de Guimarães, and Citânia de Briteiros. And perhaps, a drink at Duas de Treta bar!

Tomorrow, we plan to delve deeper into the region's history with a visit to the Martins Sarmento Museum and the Citânia de Briteiros, an archaeological site showcasing the remains of an ancient Celtic settlement. I’m particularly excited about the Citânia de Briteiros, as I've always been fascinated by Celtic history and culture. It will be interesting to see how it compares to the Celtic sites I've visited in other parts of Europe. Plus, Hans has promised to try and capture some stunning photos of the landscape.

But for now, it's time to rest and recharge, ready for another day of exploration and discovery. Guimarães, you have captured our hearts!
