Echoes of the Past, Rhythms of the Present
Today in Nafplio was a beautiful blend of historical exploration and immersion in the town's contemporary culture. It's fascinating how a single day can offer such a rich tapestry of experiences, leaving me with a deeper connection to this enchanting place.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at Cavo. The intimate atmosphere was lovely, and I enjoyed a perfectly brewed coffee while planning my itinerary for the day. Energized, I set off to explore the Fortress of Akronauplía, a landmark that promised a journey back in time.

Journey to Akronauplía Fortress
The Fortress of Akronauplía, also known as the Old Fortress, is perched right above the old town. As I ascended, I was immediately struck by the panoramic views of Nafplio and the surrounding coastline. The crisp November air carried the scent of the sea, and the autumn sun cast a golden glow over the landscape. The fortress itself is a testament to the layers of history that have shaped Nafplio. It's the oldest fortress in the city, dating back to Mycenaean times, and has been a bustling port with connections to Argos. The walls tell tales of sieges, conquests, and the ebb and flow of civilizations.
Wandering through the ruins, I imagined what life must have been like within these walls centuries ago. The fortress had been divided into separate castles, with the Castle of the Franks on the east side and the Castle of the Greeks on the west side. Later, the Venetians added a third castle, called The Castle of Toro. Each section seemed to whisper stories of its past inhabitants. I learned that Theodore Kolokotronis proudly raised the Greek flag over Akronauplía in 1822.
History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.
I explored the remnants of the military hospital, built in 1829 by Governor Kapodistrias. It was fascinating to see the stone stairs among the ruins and the small modern amphitheater nearby. Though much of the fortress has fallen to ruin, the enduring walls and strategic vantage points offered a palpable sense of history. It was easy to understand why this location was so vital throughout the centuries.

Syntagma Square: The Heart of Nafplio
After immersing myself in the ancient atmosphere of Akronauplía, I made my way to Syntagma Square, the heart of Nafplio. The square was alive with activity, a vibrant contrast to the more solitary experience at the fortress. Cafés buzzed with locals and tourists alike, and the air was filled with the aroma of Greek coffee and freshly baked pastries.

I paused to admire the beautiful neoclassical buildings that frame the square. The polished marble floor reflected the sunlight, creating a luminous effect. Syntagma Square means Constitution Square, and I learned that almost every city in Greece has one, but Nafplio's is truly unique. I observed children playing, couples strolling hand in hand, and locals engaging in lively conversations. It was a perfect snapshot of everyday life in Nafplio.
At the square's west end stands the Venetian arsenal, built in 1713, now The Archaeological Museum. On the opposite end, I spotted the Trianon, a mosque built in the late 1500s, one of Nafplio's oldest buildings. Today, it serves as a local theater. While I was there, I didn't see any specific events taking place, but I learned that Syntagma Square often hosts concerts and cultural festivities. I made a mental note to check the local listings for future events during my stay.
Before leaving Syntagma Square, I popped into Nafplia Bookstore, a charming shop that beckoned with its promise of literary treasures. As an archivist, I am always drawn to books and the stories they hold. Although most of the books were in Greek, I found a section with English titles and spent a pleasant few minutes browsing the shelves. The store also had a lovely collection of travel guides and books featuring the history and culture of Greece. It was the perfect place to pick up a souvenir that would remind me of my travels long after I returned home.

Culinary Delights: Lunch and Dinner
For lunch, I ventured to To Teloneio, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Greek cuisine. Situated near the port, it offered a cozy and elegant ambiance. I savored the fried feta and grilled sardines, each dish bursting with flavor and prepared with obvious care. The staff was welcoming, and the portions were generous. I overheard other diners praising the fried octopus and pork pancheta.

The interior was tastefully decorated, transporting me to another era. I enjoyed a delicious meal of local seafood, paired with a glass of fine Greek wine.
