Day 1: First Day in Nafplio: A Journey Through History and Charm
Exploring Nafplio's historical fortress and charming Old Town, a perfect blend of history, culture, and culinary delights.
Nafplio Beckons!
After a long journey, I've finally arrived in the captivating coastal town of Nafplio, Greece! The air is filled with the scent of the sea and the promise of historical discoveries. Today, I set out to explore Nafplio's most iconic landmarks, immersing myself in its rich past and vibrant present. From the imposing Fortress of Palamidi to the charming streets of the Old Town, every corner holds a story waiting to be uncovered.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at Noa Verde Nafplio. The café was bright and welcoming, with a lovely view of the town awakening. I savored a traditional Greek coffee and a delicious pastry, fueling up for the day's adventures. It was the perfect start to my historical exploration.

Conquering Palamidi Fortress
My first major stop was the Palamidi Fortress. The fortress is perched high on a hill, and the climb was quite the workout. I chose to ascend the 857 steps, each one offering a more breathtaking view of Nafplio and the Argolic Gulf. The crisp November air and the stunning scenery made the effort worthwhile.

As I explored the fortress, I was struck by its rich history. Built by the Venetians in the early 18th century, it was captured by the Turks and later played a crucial role in the Greek War of Independence. The fortress is an impressive example of Venetian military architecture, with its formidable design and strategic location.
I wandered through the various bastions, each named after historical figures, including the Miltiades Bastion and the Achilles Bastion. I even visited the cell where Theodoros Kolokotronis, a hero of the Greek Revolution, was imprisoned. The views from the top were simply spectacular, offering panoramic vistas of the town, the sea, and the surrounding landscapes. I took countless photos, trying to capture the beauty and grandeur of this historical site.
“History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.”
Exploring the Old Town's Allure
After descending from Palamidi, I made my way to the Old Town of Nafplio. The narrow, winding streets were filled with charming shops, cafes, and restaurants. The Venetian architecture was stunning, with colorful buildings and flower-filled balconies adding to the town's picturesque appeal.
I strolled through Syntagma Square, the heart of the Old Town, and admired the historic buildings, including the Archaeological Museum of Nafplio and the Vouleftikon, which once housed the first Greek parliament. The square was bustling with activity, locals and tourists alike enjoying the pleasant November afternoon.

A Culinary Journey
For lunch, I chose Aiolos Tavern, a charming spot known for its traditional Greek cuisine. I savored a delicious moussaka, a classic Greek dish of eggplant, potatoes, and meat sauce, topped with a creamy béchamel sauce. The taverna had a cozy, family-run atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming.

For dinner, I decided to try 3SIXTY Grill Dining | Wine Bar, a gourmet restaurant known for its premium meats and extensive wine list. I am excited to continue my exploration tomorrow, with a visit to the Bourtzi Fortress and the Komboloi Museum planned. I am particularly looking forward to seeing the Bourtzi Fortress, which I hear offers a unique perspective of the city from the sea.
Nafplio has already exceeded my expectations, and I know that the days to come will be filled with even more unforgettable experiences. The blend of history and modern life is seamless, creating a vibrant atmosphere that is both inviting and intriguing. I am so glad I chose Nafplio for my solo adventure; it is a journey I will cherish forever.
I am also considering visiting the nearby archeological sites such as Ancient Epidaurus, Mycenae and Tiryns. I have read that Nemea is also worth a visit, especially for wine lovers. Perhaps I will take a day trip to explore these ancient wonders and indulge in some local wine tasting.
And if there are any local events or festivals happening during my stay, I would definitely be interested in attending. I'll have to check local listings to see if there's anything special going on.
