Day 1: A Day of Renaissance Wonder: Exploring Florence's Duomo and Hidden Gems
Immerse yourself in Florence's artistic heart, from the Duomo's grandeur to hidden culinary delights. A perfect start to a cultural journey.
Florence's Majestic Beginning
Our Florentine adventure began today, and what a start it was! As someone who has spent years surrounded by historical documents, I was eager to step into the living history of Florence. Hans and I were both excited, albeit a little jet-lagged, ready to immerse ourselves in the heart of the Renaissance. Today was all about the Duomo, and the surrounding Piazza, and it certainly did not disappoint.
The crisp January air nipped at our faces as we set out, but the anticipation of seeing the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore kept us warm. The weather in Florence this time of year is definitely on the cooler side; I made sure to pack plenty of layers, just as the travel guides suggested. I even remembered a scarf, which Anna had teased me about, saying I was starting to dress like a proper Oma!

Our first stop was Caffè Gilli for breakfast. Founded in 1733, it exudes old-world charm. The pastries were delightful, and the coffee was strong, just what we needed to fuel our explorations. Hans enjoyed a classic cappuccino while I savored a delicate sfogliatella. It was the perfect way to start our Florentine culinary journey. Sitting there, watching the city slowly wake up, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement for all that was to come.

Stepping out into Piazza del Duomo was breathtaking. The sheer scale of the Cathedral is awe-inspiring. The Duomo, as it's known, is more than just a building; it’s a symbol of Florence itself. The marble facade, with its intricate patterns of green, white, and pink, shimmered even under the overcast sky. I could only imagine how magnificent it must look on a sunny day. The square was bustling with activity, tourists snapping photos, and locals going about their daily routines.

To visit Florence is to step back in time, to walk in the footsteps of giants who shaped not just art, but the very course of human history.
We joined the queue to enter the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. Even in January, the line was considerable, but it moved surprisingly quickly. Inside, the vastness of the space was humbling. The stained-glass windows cast colorful patterns on the stone floor, and the sheer height of the dome was dizzying. Although the interior is more austere than the exterior, it's impossible not to be moved by the grandeur of the space. I found myself craning my neck, trying to take in every detail of the frescoes and architectural elements. I was particularly fascinated by the clock designed in 1443, a rare example of an hora italica timepiece.
After the Cathedral, we ventured into the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo. This museum is a treasure trove of original sculptures and artifacts from the Duomo complex. It provided invaluable context to everything we had seen. The museum is home to over 750 works of art, detailing the 720-year history of Florence's Cathedral. Seeing the original sculptures that once adorned the façade up close was incredible. I was particularly moved by Michelangelo's Pietà Bandini and Donatello's Penitent Magdalene. The museum also showcased models and tools used in the construction of Brunelleschi's dome, offering insight into the ingenuity and skill of the Renaissance artisans.

The Sala del Paradiso, with its reconstruction of the original cathedral façade, was a highlight. It allowed us to see the sculptures in their intended context. The golden bronze Porta del Paradiso by Ghiberti was another masterpiece that left me in awe. Every panel was a work of art in itself. Hans, with his engineering background, was especially fascinated by the displays dedicated to the construction of the dome. He spent a good amount of time examining the models and diagrams, marveling at Brunelleschi's innovative techniques.
For lunch, we chose Il Vezzo, a charming restaurant known for its focus on local ingredients. We shared a plate of pappardelle with a rich wild boar ragu, and I had a glass of Tuscan red wine. The flavors were robust and comforting, a welcome respite from the cold. Il Vezzo's menu focuses on giving value to raw materials, starting from their own garden and searching for small productions and projects that enrich the territory. It was a delightful culinary experience that gave us a taste of authentic Florentine cuisine.

In the afternoon, we decided to indulge in some retail therapy at Rinascente Firenze. This department store is more than just a place to shop; it's an experience. The store emphasizes “for the city, with the city, in the city”, opening a stage for fashion, novelties, and events. The building itself is beautiful, and the selection of goods is impressive. I found a lovely silk scarf, while Hans picked up a leather wallet. We also took a break at the rooftop terrace, which offered stunning views of the city. It was the perfect spot to relax and soak in the atmosphere.

As evening approached, we made our way to La Giostra for dinner. This restaurant, recommended by several friends, is known for its warm ambiance and traditional Tuscan cuisine. The restaurant was established by the late Austrian prince, Dimitri Kunz d'Asburgo Lorena, and is family-run by his twin sons. The atmosphere was indeed warm and inviting, with candlelit tables and vaulted ceilings. We started with complimentary sparkling wine and antipasti, a generous gesture that set the tone for the evening. For our main courses, Hans ordered the Florentine steak, cooked to perfection, and I opted for the pear ravioli, a dish that came highly recommended. The flavors were exquisite, and the service was impeccable. It was the perfect end to a perfect day. After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll back to our hotel, the Hotel Boston, enjoying the quiet of the city at night.

Florence in January has a certain charm. The crowds are smaller, and the city feels more intimate. While the weather can be unpredictable, with average temperatures ranging from 2°C to 11°C, it's nothing that a warm coat and a good pair of boots can't handle. We certainly were prepared!
Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Uffizi Gallery, Piazza della Signoria, and Palazzo Vecchio. I am particularly excited about the Uffizi, as it houses some of the world's most renowned Renaissance masterpieces. Hans is keen to see Palazzo Vecchio, with its impressive architecture and historical significance. We also plan to visit the Atrium Bar for a relaxing evening drink. I am sure it will be another day filled with art, history, and culinary delights.
As I sit here, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel grateful for this experience. Florence is a city that truly captivates the senses. I am eager to see what tomorrow brings. Good night from Florence!
