Echoes of the Past

Today marked the beginning of our journey into the heart of ancient Greece. Leaving behind the familiar comforts of Berlin, Hans and I embarked on a quest to uncover the secrets of Delphi, a place that has captivated my imagination for years. As an archivist, the allure of history is irresistible, and Delphi, with its rich tapestry of myths and legends, promised an adventure unlike any other.

Our journey began with an early flight from Berlin to Athens. The flight was uneventful, but filled with anticipation. Hans, ever the pragmatist, checked all our documents multiple times, a habit I find both endearing and slightly amusing. From Athens, we rented a car and set off towards Pan Hotel, eager to soak in the Greek countryside. I must admit, I was so caught up in the excitement that I completely forgot the adapter for our Greek power outlets – a minor oversight that Hans will surely remind me of for the rest of the trip!

The drive itself was a treat, winding through picturesque villages and olive groves, with the majestic Mount Parnassus looming in the distance. The landscape was dotted with wildflowers, a vibrant contrast to the ancient ruins we were about to explore. The air was crisp and carried the scent of pine and earth, a welcome change from the urban atmosphere of Berlin. By the time we arrived in Delphi, the sun was high in the sky, casting a golden glow over the landscape.

Our first stop was the Apollon Cafe for a much-needed breakfast. The cafe was charming, with a lovely view of the city. I enjoyed a traditional Greek coffee and a pastry, while Hans opted for a more substantial breakfast of eggs and bacon. The coffee was strong and flavorful, just what I needed to shake off the travel weariness. The reviews I read mentioned the cafe's long history, family ownership since 1902, and delicious breakfast items, and I can attest that it lived up to its reputation. While enjoying our breakfast, we planned our itinerary for the day, eager to make the most of our time in Delphi.

With renewed energy, we ventured towards the Delphi Archeological Site. As we walked through the ancient grounds, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and reverence. The site was teeming with tourists, all eager to capture a piece of history. Yet, despite the crowds, there was an undeniable sense of tranquility, as if the spirits of the past were watching over us.

To walk through Delphi is to walk through the echoes of history, where every stone whispers tales of gods, oracles, and ancient wisdom.

The first major landmark was, of course, the Temple of Apollo. Standing amidst the ruins, I could almost hear the echoes of the ancient oracles, delivering their cryptic prophecies. The temple, though partially destroyed, still exuded an aura of power and mystery. I tried to imagine what it must have been like in its heyday, with priests and pilgrims flocking to seek guidance from the gods. Hans, ever the photographer, captured the scene from every possible angle, determined to preserve the memory of this moment.

As an archivist, I found myself drawn to the intricate details of the remaining structures. The weathered stones, the crumbling columns, each told a story of resilience and endurance. I ran my fingers over the ancient inscriptions, trying to decipher their meaning. It was as if I could feel the weight of history in my hands.

Next, we made our way to the Castalia Spring, where pilgrims once purified themselves before consulting the Oracle. The spring was nestled in a serene grotto, surrounded by lush vegetation. The water was crystal clear and ice-cold, a refreshing contrast to the warm afternoon sun. I couldn't resist dipping my fingers in the water, imagining the countless souls who had sought solace and guidance in this sacred place. According to myth, the spring was named after a nymph who transformed into a spring to evade Apollo, and it became a source of inspiration for the Muses.

For lunch, we chose Epikouros Restaurant - Delphi, drawn in by its promise of traditional Greek cuisine and stunning views. We were not disappointed. The restaurant was bustling with activity, but we managed to secure a table with a panoramic view of the valley. We shared a Dakos salad, a local specialty, and some slow-cooked lamb, savoring the flavors of the region. The portions were generous, and the service was friendly and attentive. I made a mental note to try to recreate the Dakos salad back in Berlin – a taste of Greece to brighten up our everyday life. The restaurant was highly recommended for its food, wine, service, and views, and I can confidently add my endorsement to the list.

After lunch, we returned to the archeological site to further explore the area. The sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, casting long shadows across the ruins. The crowds had thinned out, and the site took on an even more mystical atmosphere. We wandered through the ancient theater, imagining the performances that once took place here. The acoustics were remarkable, even in its ruined state. Hans and I took turns reciting lines from ancient Greek plays, much to the amusement (or perhaps bewilderment) of the few remaining visitors.

As evening approached, we decided to treat ourselves to a cocktail at Mr.Rose Cocktail Bar. The bar was small but lively, with a cozy atmosphere and hip tunes. The bartenders were skilled and friendly, crafting inventive cocktails with local Grecian spirits and botanicals. I ordered a cocktail with a twist of Greek flavors, while Hans stuck to his usual Old Fashioned. The drinks were delicious, and the ambiance was perfect for unwinding after a long day of exploring. The bar is known for its unique cocktail menu and talented bartenders, and I can see why it's considered one of the best bars in Delphi.

For dinner, we opted for Taverna Vakhos, a family-owned restaurant known for its modern twist on traditional Greek cuisine. The restaurant was located in the upper part of Delphi, offering stunning views of the village and the bay of Itea. We were immediately impressed by the warm hospitality and the diverse menu, which included plenty of vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options. I chose the stuffed eggplant, while Hans went for the slow-cooked goat with wild greens. Both dishes were exquisite, bursting with flavor and freshness. They also use ingredients sourced locally, including their own olives and olive oil. To finish off the meal, they gave us complementary baklava.

As we savored our meal, we reflected on the day's adventures. Delphi had exceeded all our expectations. The ancient ruins, the breathtaking landscapes, the delicious food – it was a feast for the senses. We felt a deep connection to the past, as if we had stepped back in time and walked in the footsteps of ancient Greeks. I was particularly moved by the opportunity to explore the Temple of Apollo, a place that has always held a special significance for me. Its perfect state of preservation was amazing. The theater and the views from the upper-tiered seating area were stunning. The Castalian Spring was also particularly beautiful.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Delphi Archaeological Museum, the Athenian Treasury, and the Ancient Theater of Delphi. I am eager to delve deeper into the history and culture of this fascinating place. I am particularly interested in seeing the bronze Charioteer and the Naxian Sphinx. We also plan to do some shopping at the Delphi Museum Shop.

As we walked back to our hotel, the Pan Hotel, under the starlit sky, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this incredible experience. Delphi had cast its spell on us, and I knew that this was just the beginning of our adventure. I am also looking forward to the 10th Delphi Economic Forum, which is taking place from April 9 to 12. It is amazing to see world leaders discussing important issues in such a historic place.

Before drifting off to sleep, I took a moment to jot down my thoughts in my travel journal. It's a ritual I've come to cherish on our trips – a way to preserve the memories and reflect on the experiences. As I closed the journal, I couldn't help but smile. Delphi, with its whispers of the oracle and echoes of the past, had already left an indelible mark on my soul.

Perhaps it's the historian in me, but I find something profoundly moving about standing on the same ground where people sought wisdom and guidance thousands of years ago. It's a reminder that while civilizations rise and fall, the human quest for understanding and meaning endures.

I am looking forward to what tomorrow brings. Good night from Delphi!
