Day 5: A Day of Royal Grandeur and Spiritual Reflection in Meknes
Explore Meknes' royal history and spiritual heart with Maria and Hans as they visit mausoleums and vibrant local markets.
Stepping Back in Time in Meknes
Today, Hans and I ventured deeper into the heart of Moroccan history and culture. Our explorations led us to Meknes, a city brimming with royal legacies and spiritual significance. It was a day of architectural marvels, bustling markets, and quiet contemplation, offering a rich tapestry of experiences that I am eager to share.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Haytam. The reviews I had read were mixed, but we decided to give it a try, always keen to form our own opinions. The restaurant was cozy, and we enjoyed a simple but satisfying meal of traditional Moroccan fare. It fueled us for the adventures that lay ahead. I must admit, the mint tea was a particular highlight, a sweet and refreshing start to our explorations.

Our first major stop was the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail. As we approached, I was struck by the serene atmosphere surrounding the complex. The mausoleum is a place of rest for Sultan Moulay Ismail, who ruled Morocco from 1672 until 1727. The architecture was breathtaking, adorned with intricate zellij tiles and elaborately carved plaster. Although non-Muslims cannot enter the tomb room, the antechamber was a sight to behold, with sunlight streaming through the windows and illuminating the detailed craftsmanship. Hans, with his keen eye for detail, was particularly impressed by the symmetry and design elements.

Visiting the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail felt like stepping into a world where art and spirituality intertwine, leaving an indelible mark on the soul.
The history of Moulay Ismail is fascinating. He chose Meknes as his capital and transformed it into a monumental city. He was known both for his military prowess and his architectural vision. The mausoleum itself is not just a tomb but a symbol of Moroccan pride and cultural continuity. I found myself reflecting on the layers of history contained within those walls, the stories of a powerful ruler and the artisans who brought his vision to life.
Next on our itinerary was Dar El-Makhzen, also known as the Royal Palace of Meknes. Although we couldn't go inside, the exterior was impressive enough. The palace, surrounded by high walls, exudes an air of royal authority. I learned that it was built in the 17th century by Moulay Ismail. It served as the official residence and working palace for the Moroccan Royal Family. While the King of Morocco no longer resides in Fez full-time, the Royal Palace continues to serve as an official residence and is used during royal visits and important state events.

After soaking in the royal ambiance, we decided to immerse ourselves in local life with a visit to قيسارية مولاي ادريس. This bustling market was a sensory overload in the best way possible. The vibrant colors, the sounds of vendors hawking their wares, and the aromas of spices filled the air. I was on the lookout for unique souvenirs, while Hans was more interested in capturing the scene through his camera lens. We bartered for a beautiful handwoven scarf and a set of intricately carved wooden bowls, treasures that would remind us of our time in Meknes.

For lunch, we chose Grillade Albanna, a restaurant recommended for its Mediterranean and Moroccan cuisine. We shared a delicious kefta tagine, savoring the rich flavors and tender meat. The restaurant had a lovely view, adding to the overall experience. It was a perfect spot to relax and recharge before continuing our exploration of Meknes.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at La Baraka, a restaurant known for its authentic Moroccan dishes and cozy atmosphere. We decided to indulge in a traditional Moroccan dinner, ordering couscous and grilled chicken. The staff was friendly and welcoming, and the service was excellent. The atmosphere was relaxed, making it a perfect place to reflect on our day.

Reflecting on the day, I am struck by the layers of history and culture that permeate Meknes. From the grandeur of the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail to the vibrant energy of the local market, every experience has been a feast for the senses. As we prepare for tomorrow's adventures, I am filled with anticipation for what lies ahead. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Le portail de Moulay Ismaïl and Lahdim Square, further exploring the historical and cultural landmarks of this region. Perhaps we'll also find time to unwind at LA TERRASSE, a local bar.
Tonight, as I write this, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this fascinating region with Hans. Our spontaneous decision to embrace local accommodations has allowed us to connect with the people and culture in a way that would not have been possible otherwise. I am reminded once again that the best travel experiences are often the ones that are unplanned and unexpected.
As the sun sets over Meknes, I am filled with a sense of peace and contentment. Tomorrow promises new adventures, but tonight, I am simply grateful for the memories we have made today.
And, as a side note for my fellow travelers, I did a bit of research and discovered that if our trip had been earlier in the year, we might have been able to attend the Moussem of Moulay Idriss II in Fez, a major festival commemorating the founder of the city. Perhaps next time! Also, for those interested in music, Tom Brusse will be playing at the Joker Club in Casablanca. It is amazing what you can find out!
Good night from Meknes!
