A Day of Fire and Ice

Today was a day of stark contrasts, a true testament to Iceland's dramatic beauty. From the fiery hues of the Fjallabak Nature Reserve to the icy expanse of the Skaftafell glaciers, it was an experience that ignited my senses and left me breathless. The crisp October air, tinged with the promise of winter, added an extra layer of magic to the day's adventures.

The morning began with a hearty breakfast at Glacier Goodies. I decided to try their famous fish and chips. The fish was thick and perfectly cooked, and the portion was generous enough to fuel me for the day's adventures. It's a cozy little food truck, and I can see why it's a popular spot for those exploring Vatnajökull National Park.

With a full stomach, I set off to explore the Fjallabak Nature Reserve. The drive itself was an adventure, the landscape transforming into a canvas of autumnal colors. The weather in October can be unpredictable, and today was no exception. The sun played hide-and-seek behind the clouds, casting dramatic shadows across the valleys. Fjallabak, living up to its name, was ablaze with autumn colors. The vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows of the vegetation created a stunning contrast against the dark volcanic landscapes. It felt like nature's own fireworks display, a final burst of color before the onset of winter.

I spent hours hiking through the reserve, losing myself in the surreal beauty of the Highlands. The trails were relatively quiet, and I relished the solitude, feeling a profound connection with nature. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of damp earth and distant snow. I made sure to wear layers, as the temperature fluctuated with the changing weather. At some points, the wind picked up, and I was grateful for my windproof jacket.

The beauty of Iceland lies not just in its majestic landscapes, but in the raw, untamed spirit that permeates every corner of this magical island.

After a morning immersed in the fiery landscapes of Fjallabak, I decided to grab lunch at Saatvik Restaurant (Kaffiterían Skaftafelli). This family-run restaurant offered a delightful array of vegetarian and vegan dishes. I opted for a traditional Indian curry, craving something warm and comforting after my chilly hike. The food was delicious, and the cozy atmosphere of the restaurant provided a welcome respite from the elements.

In the afternoon, it was time for a completely different experience: a glacier hike with Tröll Expeditions Skaftafell. I met my guide at the Skaftafell Terminal Tour Center, a bustling hub for adventurers eager to explore the icy wonders of Vatnajökull. I chose Tröll Expeditions because their adventures were rated very highly with lots of reviews.

Equipped with crampons, an ice ax, and a helmet, I felt like a true explorer ready to conquer the glacier. The hike itself was exhilarating. The crampons crunched into the ice with each step, providing a secure grip on the slippery surface. The ice ax became my trusty companion, helping me navigate the uneven terrain. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable, sharing fascinating facts about the glacier's formation and the impact of climate change.

The views from the glacier were simply breathtaking. The vast expanse of ice stretched out before me, merging with the horizon. Deep blue crevasses snaked across the surface, hinting at the hidden depths below. The October light cast a soft glow on the ice, creating an ethereal atmosphere. I felt a sense of awe and humility, standing on this ancient landscape, realizing the power and fragility of nature.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Jon Riki for dinner. Tucked away in an old farmhouse, this family-owned restaurant and brewery offered a unique culinary experience. I decided to try their seasonal food and home-brewed beer. The langoustine was cooked to perfection, and the beer had a unique, refreshing flavor. The restaurant had a cozy, inviting atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly.

I chatted with some fellow travelers, sharing stories of our Icelandic adventures. It was a perfect ending to a day filled with exploration and wonder. It's a place where food, craft beer, and local culture converge, providing a delightful taste of Iceland.

Sitting there, reflecting on the day, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude. Gratitude for the opportunity to witness Iceland's raw beauty, for the chance to challenge myself physically and mentally, and for the connections I made with fellow travelers along the way. I am also grateful that Hans and Sofia are safe and warm back in Berlin. I miss them terribly.

Tomorrow marks the final day of my solo adventure in Vatnajökull National Park. I plan to visit Sólheimajökull and Yoda Cave [if weather permits], and I am very much looking forward to it. I am also planning on having some fish and chips at Mia's Country Van - Local Fish & Chips for lunch, and dinner at Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon. I will also visit Kaffibarinn for a drink [if time permits].

As I prepare to leave this magical place, I carry with me memories that will last a lifetime. Iceland has a way of getting under your skin, of captivating your soul. It's a place where you can truly connect with nature, with yourself, and with the world around you.
