Chasing Glacial Dreams

Today was nothing short of magical. Imagine a landscape where ancient icebergs drift serenely on a glacial lagoon, eventually making their way to a black sand beach where they sparkle like diamonds in the sun. That's exactly what I experienced today at Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach in Iceland. It’s a place where the raw power of nature meets serene beauty, a photographer’s dream, and an adventurer’s playground.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Glacier Goodies. It's a cozy spot, and after a strong coffee and a pastry, I felt ready to embrace the Icelandic elements. The drive to Jökulsárlón was an experience in itself. The vast, open landscapes of Iceland in October have a stark beauty. The colors are muted, the skies dramatic, and there's a sense of being utterly alone with nature. I even had a brief moment of panic when I realized I’d forgotten my portable phone charger back at the campsite. Note to self: always double-check the essentials!

As I approached Jökulsárlón, the first glimpse of the glacier lagoon took my breath away. Icebergs of all shapes and sizes floated serenely in the water, their blue and white hues contrasting starkly with the surrounding black sands. Some were small and compact, others were towering giants, each a unique sculpture carved by nature over centuries. I could hear the faint cracking of the ice, a constant reminder of the powerful forces at play. The lagoon itself has only existed since the early 20th century, a consequence of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier's retreat due to global warming. It's a sobering thought, witnessing such beauty while being reminded of our planet's fragility.

I spent a good couple of hours simply wandering along the shore of Jökulsárlón, camera in hand, trying to capture the perfect shot. Seals popped their heads up from time to time, curious about the human intruder in their icy domain. The air was crisp and cold, but the stunning scenery kept me warm from the inside out. October is a fantastic time to visit, as the crowds are thinner, and there's a good chance of catching the Northern Lights if the skies are clear. Though, I wasn't so lucky today.

For lunch, I headed to Fjallsárlón Frost Restaurant. It's conveniently located and offers stunning views of the Vatnajökull glacier. I opted for the buffet, which had a great selection of hot and cold dishes. Fuelled up, I was ready for the next adventure: Diamond Beach.

Diamond Beach is just a short walk across the road from Jökulsárlón. It’s named for the glittering icebergs that wash ashore, scattered across the black volcanic sand like precious gems. The contrast is simply stunning, and I spent hours walking along the beach, marveling at the ice formations. Some were clear as glass, others a milky white, and some streaked with blue and black from volcanic ash. Each one was unique, a fleeting work of art destined to melt back into the sea.

To witness these ancient icebergs, sculpted by time and the elements, is to feel a profound connection to the earth and its history.

I found myself reflecting on my life in Berlin with Hans and Sofia. While I love our cozy apartment and the familiar rhythm of city life, these solo adventures remind me of the importance of stepping outside my comfort zone and embracing the unknown. It's these experiences that fuel my writing and give me fresh perspectives to share with my readers.

As the day drew to a close, I treated myself to dinner at Jon Riki. This family-run restaurant and brewery is housed in a renovated tractor shed, adding a touch of rustic charm. The views of the glaciers were magnificent, even as dusk settled in. I savored the seasonal food and innovative craft beer, a perfect end to a day of exploration. It felt good supporting a local business that clearly puts so much heart and soul into its craft.

Before heading back to my campsite, I decided to make a quick stop at the Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon bar. The bar has a casual atmosphere, perfect for unwinding after a long day. I enjoyed a glass of Icelandic beer, reflecting on the day's adventures and jotting down notes in my travel journal. I even chatted with a few fellow travelers, sharing stories and tips. It's moments like these that remind me why I love solo travel – the freedom to explore at my own pace, the chance encounters, and the deep connection with nature.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Fjallsárlón and take an Iceberg Boat Tour. I also want to check out the viewpoint of Fjallsjökull and possibly stop by the Vatnajökulsþjóðgarðs Visitor Centre. I am excited to see what new wonders await me. I am also committed to remember my portable phone charger!

This trip is about more than just ticking off sights on a list. It's about immersing myself in the Icelandic landscape, connecting with its raw beauty, and finding inspiration for my writing. It's about pushing myself beyond my comfort zone, embracing the solitude, and discovering new facets of myself. And it's about sharing these experiences with you, my readers, in the hope that it inspires you to embark on your own adventures, wherever they may lead.

Back at my campsite, as I zipped up my sleeping bag and listened to the wind howling outside my tent, I felt a profound sense of gratitude. Gratitude for the opportunity to witness such incredible beauty, for the strength and resilience to embark on this solo journey, and for the chance to share it all with you. Goodnight from Vatnajökull National Park. Tomorrow, new glaciers await!
