Exploring the Wild Beauty of Snaefellsnes Peninsula with Jean-Pierre
Day 1: Icelandic Wonders: First Day on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula
Discover Iceland's Snaefellsnes Peninsula with its basalt cliffs, mineral springs, and local cuisine on a sustainable travel adventure.

A Promising Start on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula
After months of planning and dreaming, Jean-Pierre and I finally touched down in Iceland, ready to embark on our 9-day adventure through the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Leaving Montreal felt like stepping out of one world and into another, and as we drove from Reykjavik towards the peninsula, the landscape transformed into something otherworldly. The anticipation was palpable, and I couldn't wait to see what Iceland had in store for us.
Our first stop was the Gerðuberg Cliffs, and what a sight to behold! The hexagonal basalt columns rose majestically from the earth, looking as if they had been carved by giants. It was a geological marvel, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the power of nature. The cliffs stretched for what seemed like forever, each column perfectly shaped, standing tall against the backdrop of the Icelandic sky. Jean-Pierre, ever the pragmatist, was fascinated by the science behind their formation, while I was simply lost in their beauty. We walked along the base of the cliffs, snapping photos and marveling at the intricate patterns formed by the basalt columns. It was a perfect way to start our journey, grounding us in the raw, natural beauty of Iceland.

Sometimes, the most beautiful places are those that remind us of the incredible forces that shape our planet.
Next on our list was the Ölkelduvatn Mineral Spring. This quirky little spot was a delightful surprise. The water, naturally carbonated, had a unique taste that was both refreshing and a bit… unusual. It was like drinking nature's own soda, fizzy and full of minerals. I must admit, the first sip was a bit of a shock, but I quickly grew to appreciate its distinct flavor. Jean-Pierre, always up for trying new things, filled up his reusable water bottle, declaring it a must-have for the rest of our trip. We left a small donation, as suggested, feeling grateful for the opportunity to taste this natural wonder. It's these small, unexpected experiences that often become the most memorable parts of a trip.

For breakfast, we stopped at Hlaðan Veitingahús. This restaurant was a delightful surprise, offering a cozy atmosphere and a menu filled with local Icelandic dishes. I opted for the traditional skyr with berries, while Jean-Pierre chose the hearty Icelandic breakfast plate. The food was delicious and prepared with fresh, local ingredients. Hlaðan Veitingahús is part of the Lava Resort Hotel, and I could tell that a lot of thought went into creating a welcoming space. The staff were incredibly friendly, and the whole experience felt like a warm hug on a chilly morning.

Lunch found us at Agnið streetfood, a vibrant culinary gem in Stykkishólmur. This wasn't just any fast-food joint; it was a celebration of Icelandic flavors served with a modern twist. I decided to try their fish tacos, made with fish cheeks, and they were absolutely divine. Jean-Pierre went for a gourmet burger made from locally sourced ingredients, and he was equally impressed. The emphasis on fresh, high-quality products was evident in every bite. Agnið streetfood is conveniently located near the Snæfellsnes Visitor Center, making it a perfect spot for travelers looking to take a break from sightseeing. The atmosphere was casual and friendly, and it was a great way to experience authentic Icelandic street food.

Before dinner, we made a stop at the Snæfellsnes Visitor Center. It was a great resource for learning more about the peninsula and planning the rest of our trip. The staff were incredibly helpful, providing us with maps, brochures, and insider tips on the best places to visit. I picked up a few souvenirs, including a beautiful hand-knitted scarf made from Icelandic wool. It’s always special to support local artisans and bring home a piece of the culture.

As evening approached, we headed to Arnarstapi Center and Snjófell Restaurant for dinner. The restaurant offered a seasonal contemporary American menu with the best ingredients from northeast Iceland. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, with large windows offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. I ordered the fish soup, a local specialty, and it was rich, flavorful, and incredibly comforting. Jean-Pierre chose the lamb, which was cooked to perfection and melt-in-your-mouth tender. The service was excellent, and we felt well taken care of throughout the meal. It was a perfect end to a perfect day, savoring delicious food while enjoying the tranquility of the Icelandic countryside.

Today was more than just ticking off sights on a list; it was about immersing ourselves in the landscape, the flavors, and the spirit of Iceland. We didn't just see the Gerðuberg Cliffs; we felt the ancient power of the earth. We didn't just drink the mineral water; we tasted the purity of nature. I was reminded of my roots in Madagascar, where nature is so intertwined with daily life. This trip is already shaping up to be an unforgettable experience, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Arnarstapi Cliff Viewpoint, visit the Bárður Snæfellsás Statue, and hike through the Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge. I'm particularly excited about seeing the Bárður Snæfellsás Statue, as I've read so much about its cultural significance. And, of course, we'll be sure to try some local delicacies at Stapinn for breakfast, Hj á Góðu Fólki for lunch, and Bjargarsteinn Mathús for dinner. And perhaps a drink at Hlaðan Veitingahús. It's all about embracing the adventure and savoring every moment.
As I reflect on our first day, I am filled with gratitude and excitement. Iceland is a land of contrasts, where fire meets ice and ancient landscapes meet modern sensibilities. It’s a place that challenges and inspires, and I am so grateful to be here with Jean-Pierre, sharing this incredible journey together. I know that this trip will not only be a feast for the eyes but also a nourishment for the soul. This is just the beginning, and I can't wait to share more of our adventures with you.
I did forget to pack a portable charger and a travel guidebook for Iceland. Note to self to get those tomorrow!
