Seydisfjordur's Embrace: A Day of Discovery
Today was a day dedicated to soaking in the unique atmosphere of Seydisfjordur. I set out with a sense of excitement, eager to uncover the hidden gems of this charming town. From exploring local art and history to indulging in traditional Icelandic cuisine, every moment was a delightful discovery. It's amazing how much a single day can enrich your travel experience, especially when you open yourself up to the unexpected.
My day began, as most days here do, with a hearty breakfast at Hótel Snæfell. The spread was simple but satisfying, fueling me up for a day of exploration. The fresh air and the promise of new adventures made the meal even more enjoyable. I made sure to take some extra time to write in my travel journal, capturing the essence of my Icelandic journey so far. I really need to remember to buy a portable phone charger in Mosá Páls tomorrow, as my phone battery keeps dying, and I need it for photos!

First on my itinerary was a visit to Blóðberg, a unique boutique that I had read about. Finding it was an adventure in itself, tucked away inside one of Seydisfjordur's oldest houses. The moment I stepped inside, I was enveloped in a cozy and inviting atmosphere. The shop is run by Erna Lilju Helgadóttir, who opened it in the living room of her home. It felt like stepping into someone's personal sanctuary, filled with carefully curated Icelandic designs.

I spent a good hour browsing through the collection of handcrafted items. There were scarves with maps of Iceland, fun cord keepers made from fish skin and wool, and delicate earrings crafted from bóluþang (bubble seaweed) found on Iceland's beaches. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-knitted scarf, a perfect memento of my time here. The owner was so kind and shared stories about the local artisans, adding a personal touch to the shopping experience. It's these kinds of encounters that make traveling so rewarding.
Sometimes, the most memorable experiences are found in the unexpected corners of a journey.
Next, I made my way to Herðubíó, the only cinema in East Iceland. As a film enthusiast, I was intrigued by this cultural landmark. The cinema is housed in the Herðubreið Community and Culture House, a building with a rich history dating back to 1923. It was fascinating to learn that the community center was envisioned to be a meeting house for Seydisfjordur, with construction beginning in 1946 and the building being unveiled in 1956. The cinema itself has had its ups and downs, ceasing operations in 2008 due to outdated equipment and lack of funds, but it was reopened in 2020 thanks to the work of Sesselja Hlín Jónasardóttir and Celia Harrison, who took over the community center in 2017. Sadly, there wasn't a screening today, but I was still able to peek inside and admire the vintage charm of the place. It felt like stepping back in time, imagining the countless movie nights and community events that had taken place within those walls. Herðubíó is not just a cinema; it's a symbol of the town's resilience and its commitment to preserving its cultural heritage.

After my cultural exploration, I decided to embark on a Seydisfjordur Tour. There are so many options, ranging from hiking tours to jeep tours into the highlands. I opted for a leisurely e-bike tour along the fjord. The fresh air, the stunning scenery, and the gentle whir of the electric bike made for a perfect afternoon. The tour guide shared fascinating insights about the local flora and fauna, as well as the history of the region. I learned about the unique geological formations, the diverse birdlife, and the traditional farming practices of the area. It was an immersive experience that allowed me to connect with the landscape on a deeper level. I need to see if Jean-Pierre would enjoy something like this when we eventually come here together.

Lunch was an experience in itself. I ventured out to Vogafjós Farm Resort, which is a bit of a drive from Seydisfjordur, but well worth it. The restaurant is located right beside the cowshed, offering a unique dining setting. I tried their beef carpaccio, and it was delicious. The resort is known for its homemade local food, including smoked trout, lamb shanks, and their famous Geysir rye bread baked in an underground bakery. As I savored my meal, I watched the cows being milked through a glass window. It was a truly immersive and educational experience, connecting me to the source of the ingredients on my plate. I even got to pet some of the calves and sample the fresh milk. It was a delightful reminder of the simple pleasures in life.

In the evening, I returned to Seydisfjordur for dinner at Old Bank - Hotel Aldan. The hotel is set in two historic buildings, a former bank and an old post office, adding to its charm. The restaurant had a cozy and elegant atmosphere, with a menu featuring Icelandic à la carte dishes. I decided to try the Arctic char tartare, a local specialty, and it was exquisite. The flavors were fresh and vibrant, showcasing the best of Icelandic cuisine. After dinner, I strolled to the Nordic Restaurant for a drink. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration, chatting with locals and fellow travelers, sharing stories and laughter.
