Today was a journey back in time, a deep dive into the heart of San Gimignano's medieval soul. With Ana and Luka by my side, I set out to explore the artistic and historical treasures that this Tuscan gem holds. It's amazing how much history is packed into this relatively small area; every corner seems to whisper tales of centuries past.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Ristorante Sosta sulla Francigena. The restaurant lived up to its name, offering a delightful stop along the ancient Via Francigena. The atmosphere was cozy, and the food was simple but delicious – the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. Luka was particularly fond of the pastries, and Ana and I enjoyed the strong Italian coffee. I appreciated the restaurant's location, which provided a beautiful view of the surrounding Tuscan hills.

Our first stop was the Chiesa di Sant'Agostino. From the outside, the church appeared quite simple, but stepping inside was like entering another world. The interior was dominated by the stunning fresco cycle on the Life of St. Augustine, painted by Benozzo Gozzoli. The vibrant colors and detailed scenes were captivating, and I found myself lost in the stories they told. Luka, surprisingly, was also quite engaged, pointing out various figures and asking questions about their roles. The altarpiece, the Coronation of the Virgin by Piero del Pollaiuolo, was another highlight, a masterpiece of Renaissance art.

The Pinacoteca, though small, offered a deep insight into San Gimignano's artistic heritage. We saw works by Coppo di Marcovaldo, Lippo Memmi, and Filippino Lippi.

We could see the entire town spread out below us, with its iconic towers and the rolling Tuscan countryside stretching out in every direction. It was a truly unforgettable experience, and Luka was especially thrilled to be at the highest point in the city.


After immersing ourselves in art and history, we decided to take a break for lunch at La Mangiatoia. This charming restaurant offered a delightful menu of Tuscan cuisine. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the staff were incredibly friendly. I opted for the truffle carbonara, which was rich and flavorful, while Ana enjoyed the gorgonzola flan. Luka, as usual, went for the pasta with tomato sauce, which he devoured in minutes. The restaurant’s attention to detail and the quality of the ingredients made it a memorable meal.

With our bellies full, we made our way to the Fonti Medievali. These ancient public fountains, located just outside the city walls, were once the primary source of water for San Gimignano. It was easy to imagine the women of San Gimignano gathering here to collect water and wash clothes, their voices echoing through the centuries. Luka enjoyed splashing his hands in the cool water, while Ana and I appreciated the historical significance of the site.

For dinner, we chose Ristorante La Stella. The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the menu featured classic Tuscan dishes. I ordered the Florentine steak, which was cooked to perfection, while Ana opted for the homemade pasta. Luka enjoyed a simple but delicious pizza, and we all shared a bottle of local wine. The service was attentive, and the food was outstanding, making it a perfect end to our day.

Tomorrow marks the last day of our family adventure in San Gimignano. We plan to visit the Torre Rognosa, Piazza della Cisterna and Vernaccia di San Gimignano Wine Experience La Rocca. We'll also have breakfast at Chiribiri, lunch at Osteria del Carcere and dinner at Il Trovatore, and make sure to visit Il Negozio delle Curiosità for some last minute shopping. I'm looking forward to exploring more of San Gimignano's hidden corners and savoring the last moments of our Tuscan getaway. I am also hoping to find an adapter for charging electronics and an extra memory card for the camera, which I forgot to pack.


San Gimignano has a way of capturing your heart, of transporting you to another time. It's a place where history comes alive, where art and architecture tell stories of centuries past. I am grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with my family, to create memories that will last a lifetime.
