A Day of Macaws and Amazonian Majesty

Today was nothing short of magical. Waking up in the heart of the Tambopata National Reserve, Ana, Luka, and I prepared for a day filled with the vibrant life that only the Amazon can offer. The air was thick with humidity, a familiar sensation that’s becoming the backdrop to our family’s adventure. I was especially excited, as today’s itinerary promised a visit to the famed Collpa Chuncho - Macaw Clay Lick, a Macaw Clay Lick, and an immersion into the depths of the Tambopata Research Center.

Our day began early, fueled by a hearty breakfast at El Tambo. The local flavors were a delightful introduction to the day, setting the stage for the sensory feast that awaited us. The plan was to head towards Collpa Chuncho, one of the largest macaw clay licks in the region. I made sure I had my camera ready; I had even remembered to buy extra memory cards, after almost running out of space yesterday!

The boat ride to Collpa Chuncho was an adventure in itself. As we glided along the Tambopata River, the rising sun painted the sky with hues of orange and pink, casting a golden glow on the water. Luka was especially thrilled, pointing out every bird and monkey he could spot along the riverbanks. Ana and I were equally captivated, soaking in the serene beauty of the surroundings. The temperature was already climbing, a typical October day in Tambopata, with highs expected to reach around 32°C.

As we approached Collpa Chuncho, the anticipation grew palpable. The sounds of the rainforest intensified, a symphony of chirps, squawks, and rustling leaves. And then, we saw it – a wall of clay teeming with life. Hundreds of macaws and parrots, a kaleidoscope of colors, flocked to the clay lick to feed on the mineral-rich soil. The sight was simply breathtaking. Scarlet macaws, blue-and-yellow macaws, and various other parrot species created a mesmerizing spectacle as they swooped and soared around the clay lick.

To witness such a vibrant display of life in its natural habitat is a powerful reminder of the importance of conservation and the delicate balance of our ecosystems.

I spent hours photographing the macaws, trying to capture the essence of their beauty and energy. Luka was fascinated, peppering our guide with questions about the birds and their behavior. Ana, ever the architect, marveled at the intricate patterns and textures of the clay lick, finding inspiration in nature’s design. I was hoping to catch a glimpse of the Blue-headed macaw, but, according to our guide, they are harder to spot these days.

Our guide explained that the macaws eat the clay to neutralize toxins from their diet. It was fascinating to learn about the intricate relationship between the birds and their environment, a testament to the wisdom of nature. The sounds were incredible, a cacophony of squawks and screeches as the birds jostled for position on the clay lick. The air was filled with the energy of life, a vibrant celebration of the Amazon’s biodiversity.

After the Clay Lick, we had lunch at MARACUYEAH. I tried a local fish dish, and it was delicious! Luka, of course, stuck to rice and chicken. Ana enjoyed a fresh fruit salad.

In the afternoon, we ventured deeper into the rainforest, heading towards the Tambopata Research Center. This renowned research facility is one of the most remote lodges in South America, offering a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the heart of the Amazon. The boat ride to the center was another opportunity to spot wildlife, and we were fortunate enough to see a family of capybaras lounging on the riverbank.

Arriving at the Tambopata Research Center felt like stepping into another world. The lodge is nestled amidst the lush greenery of the rainforest, a haven of tranquility and scientific exploration. We were greeted by the center’s staff, who were passionate about their work and eager to share their knowledge with us. The center is committed to conservation and proper eco-management in the area.

We took a tour of the research facilities, learning about the various projects being conducted at the center. From studying macaw behavior to monitoring the health of the rainforest ecosystem, the researchers were dedicated to understanding and protecting this incredible environment. It was inspiring to see their commitment and passion, a reminder of the importance of scientific research in conservation efforts.

One of the highlights of our visit was a guided walk through the rainforest with one of the center’s researchers. He shared his insights into the flora and fauna of the region, pointing out medicinal plants, identifying animal tracks, and explaining the complex relationships between the different species. Luka was particularly engaged, asking insightful questions and eagerly soaking in the information. I was impressed by his curiosity and enthusiasm, a sign that our family’s adventure was sparking a lifelong love of nature and science.

The guest rooms are located away from the dining, bar, and lounge areas, which makes for a quiet retreat. After our walk, we enjoyed a relaxing evening at the center, savoring a delicious dinner at Restaurante MOSHE and reflecting on the day’s experiences. The sounds of the rainforest filled the air, a lullaby of nature that soothed our souls. As we sat there, sharing stories and laughter, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for this incredible journey.

Before heading to bed, I decided to check out the Shaman's Bar for a nightcap. The atmosphere was relaxed, and I enjoyed chatting with some of the other guests about their experiences in the rainforest. It was a great way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.

As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe and wonder. Today had been a reminder of the incredible beauty and diversity of our planet, a testament to the power of nature to inspire and captivate. I was grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with my family, creating memories that would last a lifetime.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Lago Sachavacayoc and La jungla de doña Ayda [lakes and jungles], and I am excited to see what other wonders await us in this magical corner of the world.

I am also looking forward to shopping for souvenirs at Selvatica Perú.

I am a little concerned about the weather, however. October is a transition month, and there is a chance of light rain. I hope I have packed appropriately! I did forget my raincoat, after all...

But even if it rains, I know that we will still have an amazing time. After all, we are in the Amazon rainforest! And as they say:

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

And I know that this adventure will be worth it.
