A Day of Discovery in Tambopata

Today was a day of exploration and immersion into the heart of the Amazon. From scaling the heights of a canopy tower to savoring local flavors and experiencing the jungle's vibrant nightlife, Tambopata revealed more of its secrets to Ana, Luka, and me. It’s days like these that remind me why we chose this adventure, trading our Zurich routines for the symphony of the rainforest.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante MOSHE. The view of the Tambopata River was simply breathtaking, providing an extraordinary sight as we enjoyed delicious regional food. It’s amazing how a simple meal can feel so special when enjoyed amidst such natural beauty. Luka, of course, was more interested in spotting monkeys than admiring the scenery, but even he had to admit the view was pretty cool. After breakfast, we set off to explore the Collpas Tambopata Inn Tower.

The Collpas Tambopata Inn Tower is known as the tallest canopy tower in the region, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. Climbing to the top gave us a panoramic view of the rainforest stretching out as far as the eye could see. The sheer scale of the Amazon is humbling; it feels like you're standing on top of the world, surrounded by an endless sea of green. Ana was particularly thrilled, snapping photos from every angle, determined to capture the perfect shot. Luka, ever the curious one, peppered our guide with questions about the different bird species we spotted flitting through the canopy. I was impressed by the Inn's commitment to eco-tourism, blending seamlessly into the environment.

The rainforest is a symphony of life, where every creature plays its part in a delicate balance.

Next on our itinerary was the Ecoturistico Tambopata Corridor Kiajabake Bame, a nature preserve that promised an immersive experience in the Amazon’s vibrant ecosystems. Getting there involved a scenic boat ride along the Madre de Dios River, which was an adventure in itself. The river was teeming with life – we spotted herons, caimans, and various other birds along the way. According to what I read, the preserve is known for its rich biodiversity, housing an impressive array of wildlife, including exotic birds, playful monkeys, and elusive jaguars. While we didn't spot any jaguars, we did see several families of monkeys swinging through the trees, much to Luka's delight. The preserve is dedicated to conservation and sustainable tourism, which aligns perfectly with our values.

Lunch at El Tambo was a delightful experience, offering a taste of authentic Amazonian cuisine. The flavors were rich and diverse, with dishes made from local ingredients. Ana, always the adventurous foodie, tried a bit of everything, while Luka stuck to the more familiar options. I enjoyed sampling some of the local fish, which was incredibly fresh and flavorful. The restaurant itself had a rustic charm, with open-air seating that allowed us to soak in the sights and sounds of the jungle while we ate.

As the day wound down, we found ourselves at the Bamboo Bar Tiki Hut. This lively venue is renowned for its exotic atmosphere, adorned with bamboo decor and tropical motifs that transported us to an island paradise. The bar specializes in a wide array of drinks, from classic tiki cocktails to innovative concoctions that highlight local flavors. I opted for a Pisco Sour, while Ana tried a fruity concoction recommended by the bartender. Luka, of course, had a non-alcoholic smoothie that he declared was the best drink ever. The friendly staff and vibrant atmosphere made it the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring. As the evening progressed, the bar came alive with music and laughter, providing a glimpse into the local nightlife scene.

Dinner at Restaurant Purita Selva was the perfect end to a perfect day. The restaurant had a cozy, intimate atmosphere, with soft lighting and traditional decor. The menu featured a range of regional specialties, and we opted for a selection of dishes to share. The food was delicious, and the service was impeccable. It was a wonderful way to reflect on the day's adventures and savor the flavors of Tambopata.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much we had packed into a single day. From the heights of the canopy tower to the depths of the jungle, Tambopata had revealed its beauty and diversity. It’s experiences like these that create lasting memories and strengthen our bond as a family. As we head into tomorrow, we are scheduled to visit La Base Tambopata and Reserva Ecologica Taricaya. I am excited to see what other wonders await us in this incredible corner of the world. I am also looking forward to visiting the MERCADO DE PRODUCTOS DE TAMBOPATA tomorrow, as I am always interested in supporting local businesses. I am also hoping to find a raincoat there, as I forgot to pack one, and I don't want to be caught in the rain.

Back at our lodge, as I write this, the sounds of the jungle lull me into a peaceful state. The symphony of crickets, frogs, and other nocturnal creatures creates a soothing backdrop, a world away from the hustle and bustle of Zurich. I am grateful for this opportunity to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with nature and my family. Tomorrow promises more adventures, and I can't wait to see what Tambopata has in store for us.

I'm also reminded of how much easier it is to travel now compared to when I was growing up in Škofja Loka. Back then, a trip like this would have been a logistical nightmare, but now, with a few clicks, we can book flights, accommodations, and tours from anywhere in the world. It makes me appreciate how technology has opened up the world to us, allowing us to explore new cultures and experiences with ease. And while I love my job as a software engineer, there's nothing quite like being immersed in nature, far away from screens and code. This trip is a reminder of the importance of balance, of taking time to disconnect and recharge in the natural world. It’s a lesson I hope to instill in Luka as he grows up, teaching him to appreciate the beauty and fragility of our planet.
