Beneath the Surface: A Day of Subterranean Wonders

Today marked the beginning of my solo adventure to Škocjan Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site that has been beckoning me with its promise of geological marvels and awe-inspiring beauty. Leaving Zurich behind, I embarked on a journey to reconnect with my Slovenian roots and explore a natural wonder that I had only heard tales of. Little did I know, this first day would be an immersion into the depths of the earth, a sensory experience unlike any other.

The crisp morning air greeted me as I landed in Ljubljana. The familiar scent of the Slovenian countryside filled my lungs as I made my way to Divača, the closest town to the Škocjan Caves. The journey itself was a scenic prelude to the main event, with rolling hills and quaint villages dotting the landscape. It felt good to be back in Slovenia, even if only for a short while. Ana and Luka would have loved this drive. I made a mental note to bring them here next year.

My first order of business was breakfast, and Ambrožič Restaurant, located right at the entrance to the Škocjan Caves Park, was the perfect spot. The restaurant was warm and inviting, a welcome contrast to the chilly November air. I savored a traditional Slovenian breakfast, fueling up for the day's adventure. I opted for *štruklji*, a delicious rolled dough pastry filled with cottage cheese, a taste of home that warmed me from the inside out. I also had a cup of *bela kava*. Sipping the rich coffee, I glanced over the tour information, excitement bubbling within me. It's worth noting that in the winter months, which are from November to March, the restaurant still provides tasty meals, so it's a great place to stop any time of year.

Before descending into the depths, I made a quick stop at the Tuš market in Divača. I wanted to grab a few essentials – water, some snacks, and of course, a bar of *Gorenjka* chocolate, a Slovenian classic. The market was bustling with locals, and I enjoyed the brief immersion into everyday Slovenian life. It's funny how the simplest things, like buying groceries, can feel so much more vibrant in a different country. I picked up some local dried fruits as well, a healthy snack for the walk.

Finally, the moment arrived. I joined the guided tour and we began our descent into the Škocjan Caves. The temperature dropped noticeably as we entered the cave, a welcome change after the mild autumn day. The air was heavy with moisture, and the sound of dripping water echoed through the chambers. I was glad I'd packed a warm jacket; the temperature inside hovers around 12°C year-round.

As I ventured deeper, I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of the underground canyons. The Reka River roared through the depths, carving its path through the limestone over millennia. The formations were surreal – stalactites and stalagmites creating otherworldly sculptures, shaped by the patient hand of time. Our guide explained the geological processes at play, painting a picture of the cave's formation over millions of years. It was fascinating to learn about the unique ecosystem that thrives in this subterranean world. I tried to capture the immensity of the caverns with my camera, but no photograph could truly do it justice. You have to be there, to feel the cool damp air on your skin and hear the echoes of the river.

Nature's artistry is at its finest in the Škocjan Caves, where the echoes of the Reka River resonate through chambers sculpted by time and water, creating a symphony of geological wonders.

The highlight of the tour was undoubtedly the Silent Cave and the Murmuring Cave. The Silent Cave, adorned with dripstone formations of various shapes and colors, was breathtaking. Then, the Murmuring Cave was an absolute contrast, where the Reka River thunders powerfully. The roar of the water was deafening, and the sheer force of nature was humbling. I felt a profound sense of awe, standing in the presence of such raw power. I could only imagine what it must have been like for the first explorers who ventured into these caves, with just the light of their torches to guide them.

Emerging from the caves, I took the path across the Big Collapse Doline. The views were stunning, offering a different perspective of the underground world I had just explored. The path wound its way through the Tominc Cave, where archaeological finds hint at the cave's use by humans in ancient times. The natural bridge across the Little Collapse Doline was another highlight, its shape reminiscent of a proteus, the unique cave salamander.

After the cave tour, I was ready for a hearty lunch. I decided to try Magdalena Food & Fun. Although it's located closer to Postojna Cave, it was worth the short trip. I was eager to sample some modern Slovenian cuisine. I had a scrumptious burger and a local craft beer. It was the perfect way to refuel after a day of exploration. It was interesting to learn that the restaurant's design was inspired by the Magdalena Cave, part of the Postojna Cave system.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Ošterija Na Planinci for dinner. This traditional Slovenian restaurant offered a cozy atmosphere and a menu full of local specialties. I savored a hearty stew, rich with meat and vegetables, a comforting dish that warmed me from the inside out. The staff was friendly and welcoming, and I felt right at home. It's these little moments of connection that make travel so special. The restaurant also has rooms and is close to the caves, so it's an ideal location for tourists.

Reflecting on the day, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude. I had journeyed into the heart of the earth and witnessed a natural wonder that had taken millennia to create. I had reconnected with my Slovenian heritage and experienced the warmth and hospitality of its people. As I prepared for tomorrow's adventures – exploring Rakov Škocjan Landscape Park and J'kopinov skedenj – I knew that this solo trip to Škocjan Caves would be a journey I would cherish forever. I'm especially looking forward to exploring the natural bridge in Rakov Škocjan. And perhaps I'll treat myself to a glass of local wine at the Wine bar Vinakras.

This trip is more than just seeing sights; it's about feeling connected – to nature, to my roots, and to myself. And as I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but wonder what other subterranean secrets Slovenia held in store.
