A Journey Through Time and Nature

Today was a delightful blend of natural beauty and historical exploration, a true feast for the senses. I started the day with a heart full of anticipation, ready to immerse myself in the wonders that Matera and its surroundings had to offer. From the serene landscapes of Parco Gallipoli Cognato to the spiritual heights of Matera's Cathedral, every moment was a treasure.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Il Terrazzino. This charming spot offered a delightful start to the day. The atmosphere was cozy, and the food was simply divine. I savored every bite, knowing that a day of adventure awaited. It's amazing how a good meal can set the tone for an entire day, and Il Terrazzino did not disappoint. Jean-Pierre and I enjoyed the local pastries and strong Italian coffee, fueling up for our explorations.

After breakfast, we set off to Parco Gallipoli Cognato, a natural haven a short distance from Matera. The drive itself was scenic, with rolling hills and picturesque countryside views. As we approached the park, the landscape transformed into a tapestry of lush greenery and rugged terrain. This park is located in the heart of the Basilicata region and includes the areas of Accettura, Calciano and Oliveto Lucano in the province of Matera, and Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa in the province of Potenza. The park protects a large area which has important naturalistic, historical and ethno-anthropological features.

The park is known for its diverse flora and fauna. As we hiked along the trails, we were surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature. The air was fresh and clean, a welcome change from the city. We spotted various bird species and wildflowers, each adding to the park's charm. The trails were well-maintained, making it easy to navigate the terrain. I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace and tranquility as we walked deeper into the park.

In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.

One of the highlights of Parco Gallipoli Cognato was the panoramic views from the higher elevations. From these vantage points, we could see the rolling hills and valleys stretching out before us. The landscape was dotted with small villages and farms, each adding to the area's rustic charm. I took countless photos, trying to capture the beauty of the scene. It was a moment of pure bliss, feeling connected to nature and the world around us.

After spending several hours exploring Parco Gallipoli Cognato, we made our way back to Matera. Our next stop was the Cattedrale di Maria Santissima della Bruna e Sant'Eustachio, a magnificent cathedral that stands as a testament to Matera's rich history and religious heritage. The cathedral, officially known as the Cathedral of the Madonna della Bruna and Saint Eustace, is the main Catholic place of worship in Matera, mother church of the archdiocese of Matera-Irsina.

As we approached the cathedral, I was struck by its grandeur and architectural beauty. The facade was adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures, each telling a story of faith and devotion. The cathedral was built in Apulian-Romanesque style in the 13th century on the highest point of the Civita, above the ancient Benedictine monastery of Sant'Eustachio. The rocky base on which it was built was raised over six meters, so that it could be visible from any point of the city. The works began in 1230, boosted by Andrea, the first Archbishop of Acerenza and Matera, and were completed in 1270. Initially dedicated to Santa Maria di Matera, later to Santa Maria dell'Episcopio, from 1389 it was dedicated to Santa Maria della Bruna, patron saint of the city. In that year, Pope Urban VI (formerly archbishop of Matera) established the liturgical feast of the Visitation of Mary to Saint Elizabeth, falling on 2 July, the day of the Feast of the Bruna. From 1627, the cathedral was also named after Sant'Eustachio.

Stepping inside, I was immediately enveloped in a sense of reverence and awe. The interior was bathed in soft, ethereal light, creating a serene atmosphere. The high vaulted ceilings and ornate decorations added to the cathedral's splendor. I spent some time admiring the stained-glass windows, each depicting biblical scenes in vibrant colors. The Cathedral of Matera stands as a symbol of the city's rich history, blending architectural styles from the Apulian Romanesque period and incorporating elements from various phases of Matera's religious and cultural development. The cathedral's position on the ridge between the two Sassi gives it a commanding view of the city, making it a key cultural and historical landmark.

After our visit to the cathedral, it was time for lunch. We headed to La Grotta Del Gusto, a charming restaurant known for its authentic Materan cuisine. The restaurant's ambiance was cozy and inviting, with rustic décor and friendly staff. We ordered a selection of local specialties, each bursting with flavor and freshness. It was a culinary journey through Matera's rich gastronomic heritage.

In the afternoon, we sought out a bit of local flavor at JAR - Beer, Wine & Bites. This cozy spot was perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, and the selection of drinks was impressive. I opted for a glass of local wine, while Jean-Pierre tried one of their craft beers. We savored our drinks while chatting with some of the locals, learning more about Matera's culture and traditions. This trendy spot overlooks the ravine with bean bag chairs scattered amongst the rocky alcoves. The main section was full when we went at 7pm on a Saturday, so they fitted us in on a little piazza next door. This isn't the place to go for a Spritz—they have a small menu of seven unique cocktails. I enjoyed their version of a whiskey sour, Peccato Originale (original sin) with apple juice. There isn't much of a food menu, but you can pay individually for snacks like taralli, capers, and crisps.

As evening approached, we made our way to DIMITRIA | Il ristorante for dinner. This elegant restaurant offered a sophisticated dining experience, with a menu that showcased the best of Materan cuisine. The service was impeccable, and the food was simply outstanding. I savored every course, appreciating the chef's creativity and attention to detail. The menu focuses on local Lucanian dishes made with organic ingredients. There were a few good vegetarian dishes, and there are gluten-free options too. After the free bruschetta introduction, we shared the delicious Parmigiana Lucana, which unlike a typical parmigiana has pasta along with aubergine, cheese, and tomato. The pasta dishes were also excellent. My favourite was the Antico Fusillo, twisty fusilli with a basil and ricotta pesto topped with peperoni cruschi. Simon preferred the simpler Lagane di Orazio, long thick pasta with a creamy chickpea sauce.

Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences I had. From the natural beauty of Parco Gallipoli Cognato to the spiritual heights of Matera's Cathedral, every moment was a treasure. I am excited about tomorrow, our last day in Matera, where we plan to explore the Path of the Seven Stones and the charming village of Castelmezzano. I can't wait to see what wonders await us.

Tonight, I am filled with a sense of contentment, knowing that I have made the most of my time in this magical city. It's moments like these that make travel so rewarding, and I am grateful for the opportunity to share them with Jean-Pierre and all of you. Goodnight from Matera!
