Discover the serene beauty of Crosis Waterfall and the historic allure of Fagagna in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. A day of nature and culture!
A Day of Serenity and History
Today was a beautiful blend of nature's tranquility and the echoes of history, a perfect representation of what Friuli-Venezia Giulia has to offer. Leaving the crisp morning air behind, we set out to explore, with the promise of cascading waters and ancient villages guiding our way.
Our first stop was the Crosis Waterfall, near Tarcento. The drive itself was picturesque, winding through the hills north of Udine. As we approached Zomeais, the anticipation grew, and soon we were parking the car and embarking on a short walk to the falls. The trail was easy, just a few minutes, and before we knew it, the waterfall was before us.

While not entirely natural, with a man-made dam contributing to its 15-meter drop, the waterfall had a raw, untamed beauty. The Torre river plunged down, creating a mesmerizing scene. I could imagine that the base of the waterfall would be a perfect spot for a swim in the warmer months. Even in December, the power of the water and the surrounding scenery was captivating.
Emily was particularly fascinated, snapping photos from every angle, while David enjoyed the peaceful sounds of the water. For me, it was a moment to reflect on the simple, yet profound, beauty of nature.
The beauty of Friuli lies not only in its landscapes but also in its ability to transport you back in time, making every corner a living history book.
After soaking in the waterfall's charm, we drove to Fagagna, a village recognized as one of the most beautiful in Italy. As we approached, the village unfolded before us, revealing its ancient roots and well-preserved architecture. Fagagna is known for its two castles and the way five ancient hamlets have merged over time.

We strolled through the village, admiring the old cobblestone streets and the historic buildings. The chill in the air was a reminder that winter was indeed upon us, but the charm of Fagagna warmed our spirits. We learned that Fagagna was historically a consortium of residential fiefs, with the Patriarchs of Aquileia entrusting the area to small feudatories for protection.
One of the most striking features of Fagagna is the tower, once part of the ancient castle, now serving as a bell tower. We also saw the remains of the imposing bastion with loopholes. The Palazzo della Comunità, built between 1490 and 1505, stood as a testament to the village's rich history, once serving as the administrative and judicial center.
Before our adventures, we started the day with breakfast at l'Osteria in Fagagna. It was a cozy spot, and the staff were friendly. It seemed like a popular place with the locals.

For lunch, we ventured to Trattoria Al Collio in Trieste. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere and seemed popular with tourists. David enjoyed the seafood, while Emily tried a local pasta dish. I opted for the fritto misto, which was delicious.

In the late afternoon, we stopped by Bar Al Got, also in Fagagna, for a quick drink. It was a small, local bar, and we enjoyed chatting with some of the locals. The bar had a friendly, welcoming atmosphere.

As evening approached, we headed to Cividale del Friuli for dinner at Antica Trattoria Ai 3 Re. The restaurant was a hidden gem, with a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. The staff were passionate about their work, and the food was a mix of Italian and local Friulian cuisine. We started with the mixed salumi and cheese platters, which were exceptional. For the main course, David and I had the beef, while Emily chose the slow-cooked poultry. The owner helped us choose the right wines for the food, and we enjoyed our dinner very much.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Friuli-Venezia Giulia has to offer. From the serene beauty of the Crosis Waterfall to the ancient charms of Fagagna and the culinary delights of Trieste and Cividale del Friuli, every moment was a treasure. It's a region that engages all the senses, leaving you with a deep appreciation for its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage.
Tomorrow, we're off to explore Grotta Gigante and Gorizia Castle. I'm particularly excited about Grotta Gigante, as I've heard it's an incredible natural wonder. David is looking forward to visiting Gorizia Castle, with its panoramic views of the surrounding area. We plan to have breakfast at Al Tirassegno, lunch at Ristorante San Michele, and dinner at Ristorante Ai Celti. We'll also try to stop by Bar Zanzibar.
As I sit here, penning down the day's events, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this beautiful region with my family. It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel – to discover new places, to immerse myself in different cultures, and to create lasting memories with the people I love. And, of course, to share these experiences with you, my dear readers, in the hope that it inspires you to embark on your own adventures.
Until tomorrow, arrivederci from Friuli-Venezia Giulia!
