A Day Immersed in Trieste's Splendor
Today was a day of diving deep into the heart of Trieste, a city that effortlessly blends history, culture, and culinary delights. From the imposing Castello di San Giusto to the lively Piazza Unità d'Italia, every corner held a new discovery. The crisp December air added a touch of magic, making our exploration even more enchanting.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Al Monastero, a charming spot known for its delicious Italian fare. While technically located in Cividale del Friuli, the reputation of Al Monastero is one of the best in the region, and we wanted to ensure we started our day off right! After a quick train ride, our first stop was the majestic Castello di San Giusto. As we approached, the castle stood proudly atop the hill, a testament to centuries of history. The kids were immediately captivated by its imposing structure, and David, ever the history buff, was eager to explore its ancient walls. The walk up was a bit steep, but the panoramic views of Trieste and the Adriatic Sea were more than worth the effort.
Inside the Castello di San Giusto, we wandered through the various exhibits, each telling a different story of Trieste's past. The armory was a particular hit with Emily, who marveled at the intricate craftsmanship of the medieval weapons. I found myself drawn to the Lapidario Tergestino, a collection of ancient Roman artifacts that offered a glimpse into the city's earliest days. The temporary exhibitions in the Bastione Fiorito added an extra layer of interest, showcasing the city's artistic flair.
Trieste is a city where history whispers from every stone and flavor dances on every tongue.
After thoroughly exploring the castle, we made our way down to Piazza Unità d'Italia, the stunning main square that faces the sea. Known as Europe's largest sea-facing square, it's framed by magnificent neoclassical and baroque buildings. The square was alive with activity, locals and tourists alike enjoying the mild December weather. The Christmas lights added a festive touch, with illuminated fir trees and a giant comet star creating a magical atmosphere.

Emily was particularly excited about the Sword of Light installation at San Giusto Castle, a 7-kilometer-long beam that aligns with mythical Michael's line. It was fascinating to learn about the connection between sacred sites from Ireland to the Holy Land, all linked by this symbolic line. David, of course, had to delve into the history of the square, explaining how it was once known as Piazza Grande during the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
For lunch, we chose Osteria Al Portonat, a delightful restaurant that promised authentic Friulian cuisine. The osteria's name comes from the nearby Portonat, the only remaining ancient gate to the town, designed by Andrea Palladio. We indulged in local specialties such as prosciutto di San Daniele and a selection of regional cheeses, paired with a crisp, local wine. The warm, wooden interiors and the friendly smiles of the staff made us feel right at home.

In the afternoon, we strolled through the city center, admiring the Liberty-style architecture that Trieste is known for. The intricate floral decorations and curved lines of buildings like Casa Terni and Casa Basevi were a feast for the eyes. I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to my own heritage, seeing echoes of Cantonese design principles in the Art Nouveau flourishes.
Before dinner, we decided to stop by Liberty 1894, a charming bar that seemed to transport us back in time. The elegant décor and the expertly crafted cocktails provided a perfect interlude before our evening meal. Sipping on a classic Negroni, I couldn't help but reflect on the day's adventures and the beauty of Trieste.

Our dinner at Hostaria Alla Tavernetta was the perfect end to a perfect day. The cozy atmosphere and the delicious seafood dishes made for a memorable meal. David and I shared a bottle of local wine, while Emily enjoyed a plate of handmade pasta. The restaurant's warm ambiance and attentive service made us feel like locals, and we savored every moment of our final culinary experience of the day.

As we walked back to our accommodation, the city was bathed in a soft, golden light. The Christmas decorations twinkled, and the sound of laughter and music filled the air. Trieste had truly captured our hearts, and we were already looking forward to what tomorrow would bring. Tomorrow, we plan to explore Castello Savorgnan di Brazzà and the Riserva Naturale Regionale del Lago di Cornino. It will be nice to get out of the city for a day and see some of the natural beauty of the region. We also plan to stop by sapone artigianale friuli venezia giulia/I Profumi del Bosco, a local shop that sells handmade soaps. I'm excited to see what unique scents and ingredients they use.
Good night from Trieste!
