Day 1: First Impressions of Santorini: Fira's Charm and Ancient Wonders
Discover the captivating beauty of Fira, explore ancient history, and savor exquisite Greek cuisine on the first day in Santorini.
Santorini Beckons!
After a long journey from Stratford, Ontario, via Athens, I've finally arrived in Fira with my friends! The air is warm, carrying the scent of the sea and blooming flowers. I'm excited to share my first day exploring this iconic island, a place that has captured my imagination for years. Get ready for tales of ancient history, breathtaking views, and the delicious flavors of Greece.
Explore Fira, the vibrant capital of Santorini, known for its stunning caldera views, rich history, and delightful culinary experiences.
Our first stop was the island's capital, Fira. The quintessential image of Santorini – whitewashed buildings clinging to the cliffside, overlooking the caldera – is a reality here. The town was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all eager to soak in the atmosphere. I must remember to buy a hat; I completely forgot to pack one! We navigated the narrow, winding streets, each turn revealing a new postcard-worthy view. The bright blue of the Aegean Sea against the stark white buildings is a sight I'll never tire of. David would have loved this. He always appreciated a good view, and I know he would have enjoyed wandering these streets with me. We miss him dearly, but I know he's with us in spirit.
To move, to breathe, to fly, to float, To gain all while you give, To roam on roads of lands remote, To travel is to live.
After a bit of wandering, we decided to delve into the island's history with a visit to the Museum of Prehistoric Thera. As someone with a keen interest in cultural anthropology, I was particularly excited about this. The museum houses an impressive collection of artifacts from the Akrotiri Minoan site, offering a glimpse into life on Santorini thousands of years ago. The remarkably well-preserved frescoes were a highlight, providing vibrant snapshots of Minoan society. It was fascinating to see the intricate pottery, tools, and weaponry, each piece telling a story of a sophisticated civilization that once thrived here. I especially appreciated the detailed information provided with each exhibit; it really helped to bring the past to life. I was particularly struck by the 'Spring Fresco,' its depiction of nature reminding me of the beauty and resilience of life, much like the island itself.

Leaving the museum, we sought a different perspective of Fira, deciding to descend the Karavolades Stairs. This historic staircase connects Fira with the old port, and while the cable car offers a quicker route, we opted for the more adventurous path. The 588 steps wind down the cliffside, offering stunning views of the caldera and the Aegean Sea. It was a bit of a challenge, especially with the sun beating down, but the views were more than worth the effort. I made sure to wear comfortable shoes, remembering the guide book's advice. The steps themselves are quite interesting, and it’s impressive to think that this was once the main way to get between the town and the port.

As we made our way down, we had to be mindful of the donkeys carrying passengers up and down the stairs. It's certainly a unique experience, though I must admit, the animal droppings along the path were a bit of a deterrent! Still, the views were incredible, and reaching the bottom felt like a real accomplishment. I think Emily would have loved this walk, and the donkeys, of course. She always had a soft spot for animals. Once we reached the bottom, we decided to take the cable car back up. It was a much quicker and easier journey, and it offered a different perspective of the stairs and the caldera.
By this point, we were all feeling quite hungry, so we started our culinary exploration of Santorini. For lunch, we chose Mama's Restaurant & Wine Bar, drawn in by its cozy atmosphere and promising menu of Greek specialties. The food was absolutely delicious! I opted for the moussaka, a classic Greek dish of layered eggplant, meat, and béchamel sauce. It was rich, flavorful, and the perfect comfort food after our walk down the stairs. My friends tried the seafood pasta and the fresh salads, and everyone was equally impressed. The service was superb, and the staff were incredibly friendly, making us feel right at home. The restaurant also had a great selection of local wines, which we, of course, had to sample. It was a perfect introduction to the flavors of Santorini.

For dinner, we decided to try Argo Restaurant, known for its stunning views and creative Greek cuisine. We weren't disappointed! The restaurant is set on two levels, with an outside verandah offering magical sunset views. Although we didn't catch the sunset itself, the views were still spectacular. The food was incredibly delicious and surprisingly affordable, offering great value for the quality. I tried the octopus with mastic and caper leaves, a dish that was both unique and flavorful. My friends opted for the sea bass gyros and the shrimp pasta, and again, everyone was thrilled with their choices. The staff were charming and attentive, making the whole experience even more enjoyable.

As the evening drew to a close, we decided to experience some of Santorini's nightlife. We headed to PK Cocktail Bar, perched on the edge of the caldera, for a nightcap. The bar has an amazing atmosphere, with comfortable seats overlooking the Aegean Sea. The expert mixologists crafted some exceptional and unique cocktails, using fresh, local ingredients. I tried a cocktail with Santorinian wine, and it was the perfect way to end the day. The staff were super friendly and really had a passion for drinks, interactions and enjoying the experience. The prices were reasonable, and the atmosphere was perfect for a relaxing evening.

Tomorrow, we're planning to explore Oia, famous for its sunsets and charming streets. I'm particularly looking forward to visiting the Castle of Oia and capturing the iconic views. We also plan to indulge in some local shopping, perhaps finding some souvenirs to bring back home. I've heard there are some great shops in Oia, offering unique and handcrafted items.
Today has been an incredible introduction to Santorini. From the ancient history to the stunning views and the delicious food, I'm already captivated by this island. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
