Exploring the Enchanting Island of Santorini with Friends
Day 5: Volcanic Adventures and Jazzy Nights in Santorini
Explore Santorini's volcanic heart, swim in hot springs, and unwind with jazz in Fira for a day of adventure and relaxation.
A Day of Volcanic Wonders and Musical Delights
Today was a day of contrasts, from the raw, volcanic landscapes of Nea Kameni to the soothing waters of the hot springs, and finally, the cool, jazzy vibes of Fira's nightlife. It’s days like these that remind me why I love to travel – the unexpected turns, the sensory overload, and the sheer joy of experiencing something new.
Experience Nea Kameni, a volcanic island in Santorini, where adventure meets breathtaking natural beauty and rich geological history.
Our day began with an early start, fuelled by strong Greek coffee and the anticipation of exploring Nea Kameni. The air was crisp as we made our way to the Santorini Old Harbor, a bustling hub of activity. Cruise ships loomed in the distance, and smaller vessels bobbed impatiently, ready to whisk tourists away on various adventures. The harbor itself is quite historic, formed by volcanic activity way back in 1650 BC. I remember reading that it used to be the island's main port until Athinios Port was built. Now, it's mostly used for cruise ship passengers and tour boats. You can reach Fira from here either by cable car, donkey, or by hiking the 580 steps up the cliff. While the donkeys looked cute, I opted for the cable car, as the steps looked a bit too challenging for me today! I made a mental note to buy a hat; I completely forgot to pack one, and the Santorini sun is no joke!
Explore the breathtaking Santorini Old Harbor, a picturesque marina surrounded by stunning views and vibrant local culture, perfect for travelers seeking adventure.
From the Old Harbor, we boarded a traditional Greek boat, a 'caïque,' headed for Nea Kameni. The boat was filled with a mix of nationalities, all eager to explore the volcanic island. As we sailed closer, the landscape transformed into a stark, almost lunar scene. The dark, jagged cliffs of Nea Kameni rose dramatically from the azure waters, a testament to the island's fiery past. I thought of David and how much he would have enjoyed this part of the trip, given his love for history and geography. He would have been in his element, explaining the geological processes that shaped this unique landscape.
Upon arrival, we disembarked and began our trek to the volcano's crater. The path was rocky and uneven, and the sun beat down mercilessly. I was grateful for my comfortable walking shoes and sunscreen. The air was thick with the smell of sulfur, a constant reminder of the volcano's active status. As we climbed higher, the views became increasingly breathtaking. The entire caldera spread out before us, a vast expanse of blue dotted with the iconic white-washed villages of Santorini. It was a sight to behold.

The earth has music for those who listen.
Reaching the summit was an exhilarating experience. We peered into the steaming crater, a surreal landscape of bubbling mud and hissing vents. It felt like stepping onto another planet. I learned that Nea Kameni is a national geological park, and it's important not to take any volcanic souvenirs. The tour guide explained the island's history, recounting the volcanic eruptions that shaped Santorini into the stunning destination it is today. It was fascinating to learn about the geological forces at play beneath our feet.
After the volcanic hike, our boat took us to the nearby hot springs of Palea Kameni. The boat anchored just offshore, and we had the option to swim to the springs. The water was a reddish-brown color, rich in minerals and reputed to have therapeutic benefits. I took the plunge, the warm water a welcome contrast to the cool sea. Swimming in the shadow of the volcano was an unforgettable experience, a unique blend of adventure and relaxation. I made sure to bring clothes to change into afterwards, remembering advice I'd read about the swimsuit ending up very dirty from the springs!
Back in Fira, after a quick shower at For All Seasons Mansion, my friends and I decided to explore the town's culinary scene. We chose Parea Tavern for dinner, drawn in by its warm and inviting atmosphere. Although it didn't have caldera views, the reviews I'd read spoke of excellent food and friendly service. We were not disappointed. The staff treated us like family, and the food was simply divine. We started with a selection of Greek appetizers: aubergine salad, tzatziki, and tomato and cheese balls, all bursting with flavor. For our main courses, we indulged in moussaka, fried calamari, and spiced pork, each dish a testament to the rich culinary heritage of Greece. The portions were generous, and the prices were reasonable. It was the perfect way to refuel after our day of volcanic adventures. I'm glad we chose this place; it seems to be highly recommended and known for its welcoming atmosphere. I especially loved the aubergine salad and the tomato balls!

As the evening drew to a close, we ventured into Fira's nightlife. We stumbled upon Kira Thira Jazz Bar, a cozy and intimate spot tucked away from the main streets. The bar was dimly lit, with walls adorned with musical instruments and vintage posters. The atmosphere was laid-back and inviting, a welcome change from the bustling tourist scene. We settled into a corner, ordered sangria, and let the smooth sounds of jazz wash over us. It was the perfect way to end the day, a moment of tranquility amidst the vibrant energy of Santorini.

The Kira Thira Jazz Bar is known as the oldest bar in Santorini, and it definitely had a unique vibe. It felt like a place where locals and tourists alike could relax and enjoy good music and good company. The owner, Dimitri, has been running the bar for three decades, and his passion for jazz was evident. I read that locals apparently use one entrance, while tourists use the other! It's open all year round, which is a nice touch.
Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Santorini has to offer. From its dramatic volcanic landscapes to its therapeutic hot springs and vibrant nightlife, the island is a feast for the senses. I am so glad that I decided to come here with my friends.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Pyrgos Kallistis, take a Santorini Wine Adventure Tour, and visit Venetsanos Winery. I'm particularly excited about the wine tour, as I've heard that Santorini's volcanic soil produces some unique and delicious wines. Before that, though, I'll need to find a shop to buy a hat to protect me from the sun! Also on the cards is a visit to The Silk Shop, which I hear is quite interesting.

As I write this, the sounds of Fira still echo in my ears – the gentle strumming of a guitar, the laughter of friends, and the distant crash of waves. It's a symphony of sensations that I know I will carry with me long after I leave this enchanting island. Goodnight from Santorini!
