A Day of Discovery in Florence

Today, David and I embarked on a journey that took us beyond the well-trodden tourist paths, deep into the heart of Florence's artistic soul. We explored hidden museums, wandered through artisan workshops, and savored the authentic flavors of Tuscan cuisine. It was a day of discovery, a day of immersing ourselves in the true essence of this Renaissance city.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at All’Antico Vinaio. Despite the long queue, it was absolutely worth the wait. I opted for the vegan focaccia, filled with sun-dried tomatoes and spicy aubergines. It was a delightful start to the day, and David thoroughly enjoyed his sandwich as well. It's always a pleasure to find a spot that caters to both our tastes. While some might say it's become a bit of a tourist trap, the quality of the ingredients and the sheer deliciousness of the sandwiches are undeniable. I couldn't help but think how much Emily would have loved this place; she's always on the lookout for great vegan options when she travels.

With our appetites sated, we headed to the Museo Nazionale del Bargello. This museum, housed in a formidable 13th-century palace that once served as a prison, is a treasure trove of Renaissance sculpture. What the Uffizi is to paintings, the Bargello is to sculpture. The museum is known for its collection of masterpieces by Michelangelo and Donatello. I was particularly captivated by Donatello's David and Michelangelo's Bacchus. It's incredible to see these iconic works up close, to appreciate the skill and artistry that went into creating them. David, ever the history buff, was fascinated by the building's history and its transformation from a palace to a prison and finally to a museum. It's amazing how these old buildings have so many stories to tell.

Next on our itinerary was the Basilica di Santo Spirito in the Oltrarno district. This church, designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, is a serene and elegant space that offers a respite from the bustling city streets. The church's simple façade belies the artistic treasures within. We admired the harmonious proportions of the interior, the delicate play of light and shadow, and the numerous side altars adorned with beautiful artwork. David was especially interested in the wooden Crucifix carved by Michelangelo, which he created while a guest at the convent. It's fascinating to think that this masterpiece was created by a 17-year-old artist.

After immersing ourselves in art and history, we ventured into the Oltrarno neighborhood, known as the heart of Florence's artisan community. This area is a maze of tiny streets and small local workshops, representing some of the most historic enterprises in the city. For over five hundred years, this area has been home to master leatherworkers, silversmiths, shoemakers, and milliners who create some of the finest handcrafted goods in the world. I was particularly interested in visiting some of the leather workshops. I have always admired the skill and craftsmanship that goes into creating these beautiful leather goods, and I was eager to see the artisans at work. We visited a small workshop where a leatherworker was meticulously crafting a handbag. It was fascinating to watch him cut, stitch, and shape the leather with such precision and care. I ended up purchasing a small leather wallet as a souvenir, a reminder of the incredible craftsmanship I witnessed in Oltrarno.

As the day drew to a close, we sought refuge in The Joshua Tree Pub, a cozy spot near the train station. Despite its name, it was full of locals, and the bartenders were passionate about their Lombardian beer. It was a great place to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. David enjoyed a local craft beer, while I savored a glass of Tuscan wine. We chatted with some of the locals, who shared their recommendations for hidden gems in Florence. It's always a pleasure to connect with people and learn about their city from their perspective. The pub had a familial atmosphere, and the music was a welcome addition to the ambiance. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploring Florence's artistic and cultural treasures.

For dinner, we had reservations at Il Latini, a renowned family restaurant in Via Palchetti. The restaurant was bustling with activity, filled with large rowdy family groups. We were seated at a communal table, which added to the convivial atmosphere. The food was served family-style, with everything placed in the middle for sharing. We started with a platter of ham, salad, and liver pate, followed by a mountain of meat. The Bistecca alla Fiorentina, a Florentine steak, was cooked to perfection and was incredibly tender and flavorful. For dessert, we enjoyed a selection of traditional Tuscan sweets, accompanied by sweet wine and biscotti. The meal was a feast for the senses, a celebration of Tuscan cuisine and hospitality.
