Adventuring Through The Kimberley's Untamed Beauty
Day 5: Chasing Horizons: Kimberley's Ancient Majesty
Immersing ourselves in the Kimberley's timeless beauty, exploring rugged ranges and savouring outback flavours with Liam by my side.
A Day Among Giants
Today was a day of monumental landscapes and subtle joys, a true immersion into the heart of the Kimberley. From the rugged beauty of the Wunaamin-Miliwundi Ranges to the panoramic vistas from Cockburn Ranges Lookout, every moment felt like stepping into a living painting. It’s days like these that remind me why I traded the predictable comforts of city life for the unpredictable allure of the open road.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Kimberley Croc Motel. I opted for a simple yet satisfying meal at the Coffee Lounge, while Liam, ever the traditionalist, went for the full breakfast. Fuelled up and ready to go, we set out towards the Wunaamin-Miliwundi Ranges. Formerly known as the King Leopold Ranges, these ancient hills have witnessed millennia of stories, etched into their rugged faces. As we drove, the landscape transformed, the flat plains giving way to imposing rock formations that seemed to rise from the earth like sleeping giants.
The sheer scale of the Wunaamin-Miliwundi Ranges is hard to put into words. Reaching almost 1,000 meters in height, the ranges are home to rare plant and animal species. The views stretched out before us, an endless expanse of ochre and green, the sky a brilliant blue canvas overhead. I couldn't resist pulling out my camera, trying to capture the immensity of the scene, knowing full well that no photograph could ever truly do it justice. Sometimes, you just have to be there, breathing in the air, feeling the sun on your skin, to truly understand the magic of a place.
We continued our journey towards the Cockburn Ranges Lookout. The drive itself was an adventure, the unsealed roads testing our 4WD and our nerves. But the promise of panoramic views kept us going, Liam expertly navigating the rugged terrain. As we climbed higher, the landscape unfolded beneath us, revealing the vastness of the Kimberley.
Finally, we reached the lookout, and the view was nothing short of breathtaking. The Cockburn Ranges stretched out before us, their orange cliffs glowing in the afternoon sun. The ranges rise more than 600 meters above the plains, shaped like a vast round fortress. From this vantage point, the world seemed to stretch on forever, an endless tapestry of colours and textures. I spent a long time simply absorbing the view, letting the immensity of the landscape wash over me. Liam, meanwhile, was busy setting up his drone, eager to capture the scene from a different perspective. He’s always had a knack for finding unique angles, a skill that complements my own photographic eye perfectly. It's one of the many reasons why we make such a great travel team. We were surprised to find we even had Optus signal, despite being quite far from Kununurra.

The Kimberley isn't just a place you see, it's a feeling you carry within you long after you've left.
Lunch was a casual affair at Subway in Kununurra. I opted for a Veggie Delite wrap with avocado, while Liam went for his usual Italian B.M.T. It wasn’t exactly a gourmet meal, but it was quick, easy, and satisfying, perfect for fuelling our adventures. Plus, it gave us a chance to stretch our legs and recharge before the afternoon's activities. I was tempted by their festive sub with cranberry sauce and herbed stuffing, but decided to stick to my usual.

As the day wound down, we made our way to the Kimberley Hotel for a well-deserved drink. Known locally as 'The Pub', this iconic Kununurra hotel has been a mainstay of the local population since the early 1960s. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, a mix of locals and tourists swapping stories and sharing laughs. I ordered a local beer, while Liam opted for a glass of Irish whiskey, a little taste of home. We sat in the palm tree-lined garden, enjoying the cool evening air and reflecting on the day's adventures.

For dinner, we decided to treat ourselves to a meal at El Questro Homestead. The Homestead is known for its fine dining and stunning location, and it didn't disappoint. We savoured every bite, enjoying the elegant atmosphere and impeccable service. It was the perfect end to a perfect day, a chance to indulge in a little luxury after a day of rugged adventure.

Before heading back to the Kimberley Croc Motel, we made a quick stop at the Kimberley Hotel again. The hotel has Kununurra's largest selection of entertainment options. We enjoyed the live music and the lively atmosphere. It was a great way to unwind and soak up the local culture before calling it a night.
Back at the Kimberley Croc Motel, as I lay in bed, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences we've had so far. The Kimberley has a way of getting under your skin, of reminding you of the raw beauty and power of nature. It’s a place that challenges you, inspires you, and leaves you feeling utterly humbled.
Tomorrow, we’re planning to explore Emma Gorge and visit the El Questro Wilderness Park - Kununurra Office. I’m excited to see what other wonders this incredible region has in store for us. And who knows, maybe we’ll even find a few more hidden gems along the way. I’m also hoping we can stop by Kimberley Fine Diamonds; I wouldn’t mind bringing a little sparkle back home with me. Good night from the Kimberley!
