Finding Paradise in the Kimberley's Embrace

As our Kimberley adventure nears its end, each day seems to unveil a new layer of this ancient land's magic. Today was all about chasing waterfalls and discovering hidden springs, immersing ourselves in the raw, untamed beauty that defines this corner of Australia. It's a reminder of why Liam and I chose to escape the ordinary and venture into the heart of the outback.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Spilled the Beans Cafe in Kununurra. The reviews I had seen online raved about their coffee, and as a caffeine aficionado, I had to check it out. Nestled at the entrance of Kimberleyland Holiday Park, the groovy outdoor cafe was the perfect spot to start the day. I opted for their iced coffee, which was as impressive as the reviews suggested, while Liam enjoyed a bacon and egg toasted sandwich. The staff were incredibly friendly, serving everything with a smile, and the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. It was a great start to our day, fueling us up for the adventures ahead.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off towards Mitchell River National Park, home to the famed Little Mertens Falls. The drive itself was an adventure, the rugged terrain testing our 4WD skills. As we bumped along the Mitchell Falls Road, I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation, eager to witness the natural beauty that awaited us. The Kimberley's vastness always humbles me, a stark contrast to the cozy familiarity of our home in Canmore.

Finally, we arrived at the parking area for Little Mertens Falls. The walk to the falls was a relatively easy one, about 2 kilometers each way, and the anticipation grew with each step. The trail wound through lush vegetation, the air thick with the scent of damp earth and eucalyptus. As we got closer, the sound of rushing water filled our ears, a symphony of nature beckoning us forward.

And then, there it was – Little Mertens Falls, a cascade of water tumbling over ancient sandstone walls into a crystal-clear pool. The sight was simply breathtaking, a true oasis in the heart of the Kimberley. We immediately changed into our swimming gear and plunged into the refreshing water, the cool spray a welcome respite from the Kimberley heat.

It's moments like these, surrounded by the unspoiled beauty of nature, that make me feel truly alive.

We spent hours swimming in the pool, exploring the rock ledges and rapids, and simply soaking in the serene atmosphere. The falls are not only visually stunning but also hold significant spiritual importance to the Wunambal Aboriginal people. We took a moment to appreciate the cultural significance of this place, respecting the land and its traditional owners. Apparently, there is Aboriginal rock art hidden behind the waterfall, but we didn’t venture behind it to confirm.

After our refreshing dip, we dried off in the sun and enjoyed a picnic lunch amidst the stunning scenery. As I munched on my sandwich, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this incredible experience, for the opportunity to connect with nature in such a profound way.

Reluctantly, we bid farewell to Little Mertens Falls and continued our journey towards our next destination: Secret Springs. The drive was a bit challenging, with some unsealed roads that tested our 4WD, but the promise of a hidden paradise kept us going.

Finally, we arrived at Secret Springs, a captivating tourist attraction near Kununurra. This hidden gem is a tranquil setting, perfect for relaxation and nature lovers. We took a leisurely stroll along the scenic trails, immersing ourselves in the stunning beauty of the area. The calm waters of the springs invited us for a refreshing swim, and we happily obliged.

The springs were fed by natural springs, creating a cool and inviting pool surrounded by lush vegetation. We spent the afternoon swimming, exploring the surrounding flora and fauna, and simply enjoying the peace and quiet of this hidden oasis. It was the perfect way to unwind after our adventurous morning at Little Mertens Falls.

As the sun began to set, we reluctantly packed up our things and headed back towards Kununurra. On the way, we stopped at Walkabout Souvenirs, located within the Coles complex. I wanted to pick up a few mementos of our Kimberley adventure, something to remind us of this incredible journey. I settled on a beautiful piece of handcrafted jewelry, a perfect Kimberley keepsake. Liam bought a small didgeridoo, hoping to learn how to play it (though I suspect it will mostly gather dust back in Canmore).

For dinner, we decided to try Kelly's Bar & Grill, a local establishment known for its hearty meals and friendly atmosphere. I had a delicious steak, cooked to perfection, while Liam opted for the grilled barramundi, a local fish delicacy. The food was excellent, and the service was top-notch. It was a satisfying end to a day filled with adventure and natural beauty.

As we drove back to our accommodation, I reflected on the day's experiences. From the thundering Little Mertens Falls to the serene Secret Springs, the Kimberley had once again captivated us with its raw, untamed beauty. It's a land of contrasts, where rugged landscapes meet tranquil oases, where ancient cultures blend with modern adventures. And as our journey nears its end, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to have experienced this incredible corner of the world.

Tomorrow marks our last full day in the Kimberley. We plan to visit Ivanhoe Crossing and Lake Argyle Dam Wall, hoping to soak in a little more of this region's unique charm before we begin our journey back to Canada. We might even check out Uncle Tony's Jungle Bar for a farewell drink to celebrate the end of this amazing trip.

The Kimberley has a way of getting under your skin, of leaving an indelible mark on your soul. It's a place that challenges you, inspires you, and reminds you of the power and beauty of nature. And as I drift off to sleep tonight, I know that a part of me will forever remain in this untamed wilderness.
