Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Spilled the Beans Cafe in Kununurra. This place is a local gem, and I can see why. The coffee was robust, just the way I like it, and the homemade banana bread was the perfect fuel for our adventures ahead. It’s always a good sign when you see locals lining up; you know you’re in for something special. Sipping my flat white, I felt a surge of energy, ready to tackle the trails and capture the essence of the Kimberley with my lens.

After breakfast, we made our way towards El Questro, a name synonymous with adventure in the Kimberley. The drive itself was a treat, with the landscape transforming from open plains to the iconic red rock formations that define this region. The anticipation was building as we approached Emma Gorge Resort, nestled at the foot of towering cliffs.

Emma Gorge: A Journey to the Heart of the Kimberley

The walk to Emma Gorge is an experience in itself. The trail winds through a diverse landscape, from dry, rocky paths to lush, green pockets of vegetation fed by natural springs. The towering cliffs on either side create a sense of awe, and the anticipation of what lies ahead keeps you motivated. The December heat was definitely a factor, making the hike a bit more challenging, but the promise of a refreshing swim at the end kept us going.

As we rounded the final bend, the gorge revealed itself in all its glory. A towering waterfall cascaded down the red rock face into a crystal-clear pool below. The water was icy cold, a welcome contrast to the sweltering heat. We immediately jumped in, the shock of the cold water invigorating our senses. Swimming in that natural pool, surrounded by the sheer cliffs and the sound of the waterfall, was an unforgettable experience.

I spent a good hour photographing the gorge from every angle, trying to capture its grandeur and beauty. The light was perfect, casting long shadows and highlighting the textures of the rock. I experimented with different compositions, trying to convey the sense of scale and the feeling of being dwarfed by nature. Liam, ever the patient one, explored the surrounding area, discovering hidden pockets of ferns and small waterfalls.

A Moment of Reflection

As we relaxed by the pool, I couldn't help but reflect on the journey that had brought us here. From the small town of Nyborg in Denmark to the vast wilderness of the Kimberley, life has been an incredible adventure. Meeting Liam while backpacking through Southeast Asia was a turning point, leading us to settle in Canmore and pursue our shared love for exploration. It’s moments like these, surrounded by natural beauty, that make me appreciate the path we’ve chosen. I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to combine my passion for photography with my love for travel, sharing these experiences with others through my blog.

Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are those that require a little effort to reach, the hidden gems that reveal themselves only to those who seek them out.

After our refreshing swim and photography session, we hiked back to the resort, feeling rejuvenated and ready for our next adventure. We grabbed a quick lunch at Kimberley Grande Sports Bar & Restaurant in Kununurra. It was a casual spot, perfect for refueling after a long morning of hiking. Liam opted for a hearty burger, while I chose a lighter salad, both of which hit the spot. The atmosphere was lively, with sports playing on the big screens, creating a fun and relaxed vibe.

Galjiba (Molly Spring): A Tranquil Escape

With our bellies full, we set off to find Galjiba (Molly Spring), a hidden oasis recommended by a local we met at the cafe. The drive took us along a gravel road, adding to the sense of adventure. As we arrived, we were immediately struck by the tranquility of the place. Galjiba is a small, spring-fed pool surrounded by lush greenery and rocky cliffs. The water was crystal clear and surprisingly warm, making it perfect for a relaxing dip.

We spent the afternoon swimming in the pool, exploring the surrounding area, and simply soaking up the peaceful atmosphere. I took some photos of the waterfall cascading into the pool, capturing the vibrant colors of the rocks and the lushness of the vegetation. Liam, as always, was in his element, climbing the rocks and discovering hidden viewpoints.

Galjiba is a sacred site for the local Aboriginal people, with cultural significance and traditional stories attached to the spring. It’s a place of healing and rejuvenation, attracting visitors seeking spiritual well-being. As we sat by the pool, I felt a deep sense of connection to the land and its history. It was a humbling experience, reminding me of the importance of respecting and preserving the natural world.

Evening Reflections and Tomorrow's Plans

For dinner, we decided to try Kimberleyland Waterfront Holiday Park | Kununurra WA. While we had initially considered The PumpHouse Kununurra, we opted for something a bit more casual. The Kimberleyland park offered a relaxed setting by the water, perfect for winding down after a day of exploring. We enjoyed a simple meal while watching the sunset over the lake, the sky ablaze with vibrant colors.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're both incredibly excited about visiting Purnululu National Park and exploring Cathedral Gorge. I've heard so much about the Bungle Bungle Range and can't wait to see it with my own eyes and capture its unique beauty through my lens. We'll be grabbing breakfast at Kimbercrust Bakery & Top End Ice before heading out, and plan to have lunch at El Questro Homestead. We'll also make a stop at the Gibb River Store to stock up on supplies. Dinner will be at PumpHouse Kununurra, which we are both looking forward to.
