Adventuring Through The Kimberley's Untamed Beauty
Day 7: Rivers, Trees, and Outback Feasts: A Day of Wonders in Kununurra
Exploring Kununurra's scenic lookouts, celebrity trees, and indulging in a gourmet camp oven experience under the Kimberley stars.
A Day of Kimberley Wonders
Today was a sensory explosion, a true immersion into the heart of the Kimberley. It was a day filled with panoramic views, a touch of whimsy, and a culinary journey that tantalized my taste buds. From the meeting of five rivers to dining under the stars, Kununurra has definitely left an indelible mark on my soul.
The day began with an early start, fueled by the excitement of exploring more of what this remarkable region has to offer. Our first stop was the Five Rivers Lookout near Wyndham. The drive there was an adventure in itself, a winding ascent that teased us with glimpses of the landscape to come. I was so glad Liam was driving; the steep, winding road definitely required a confident hand at the wheel.
Reaching the summit, I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of the vista. It felt like standing on top of the world, watching as the Ord, Forrest, King, Durack, and Pentecost Rivers converged and flowed into the Cambridge Gulf. The early morning light painted the water in shimmering hues, and the surrounding mangrove swamps and mudflats stretched out like an intricate tapestry. Liam, ever the patient one, let me snap away with my camera, trying to capture the immensity of it all. It's a view that truly humbles you, making you feel both insignificant and connected to something ancient and powerful.
Sometimes, the most breathtaking views are the ones that remind you of the world's raw, untamed beauty.

After soaking in the panoramic beauty of Five Rivers Lookout, we made our way back towards Kununurra, eager to explore the Celebrity Tree Park. I had read about this quirky little park, and I was curious to see it for myself. As we strolled through the park, it was fascinating to discover the trees planted by various celebrities who had visited Kununurra over the years. From John Farnham to Princess Anne, each tree had a plaque commemorating their visit.
It was a lovely, grassed area with large shady trees on the banks of Lily Lagoon offering views across the water. The park was also a haven for birdwatchers, with a paved path that wound along the edge of the lagoon. I spotted a few colorful birds flitting through the trees, and Liam, with his keen eye, managed to identify a couple of species I had never seen before. We found a nice spot to sit and enjoy the tranquility of the park, reflecting on the unique blend of nature and celebrity history that it offered.

For lunch, we decided to try the Kununurra Country Club Resort. While Kelly's Bar & Grill is one of the town's most popular restaurants, we decided to try something lighter for lunch. The resort itself seemed like a great place to stay, with modern rooms set amidst lush tropical gardens. It seemed like a perfect base for exploring the Kimberley. After a satisfying meal, we took a short break at our accommodation to recharge for the evening's main event: the Gourmet Camp Oven Experience.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, we were picked up for the Gourmet Camp Oven Experience, a culinary adventure that promised an unforgettable taste of the Kimberley. The location was a closely guarded secret, adding to the sense of anticipation. We were driven to a secluded spot nestled among iconic boab trees and rugged red cliffs. The setting was simply magical, with the warm glow of the setting sun casting long shadows across the landscape.
Josh Melville, the creator and host of the experience, greeted us with a warm smile and a complimentary beverage. He is passionate about showcasing locally sourced ingredients and bush tucker, and his enthusiasm was infectious. Over the next few hours, we were treated to a four-course culinary journey, each dish cooked over the coals and in camp ovens right before our eyes.
We started with saltwater crocodile canapés, infused with lemon myrtle and paired with wild hibiscus jam. The flavors were bold and unexpected, a perfect introduction to the unique tastes of the Kimberley. Next came a barramundi stack with potato rosti, cooked over the coals. The fish was flaky and moist, and the rosti added a delightful crunch. The main course was smoked pork belly, slow-cooked in the camp oven and served with mango sauce. The pork was incredibly tender, and the mango sauce provided a sweet and tangy counterpoint. For dessert, we enjoyed a decadent chocolate creation that was the perfect ending to the meal.
Throughout the evening, live music filled the air, adding to the ambiance. As we savored each dish, Josh shared stories about the region, its history, and its unique ingredients. It was more than just a meal; it was an immersive cultural experience that left us feeling deeply connected to the Kimberley. The Gourmet Camp Oven Experience is truly a must-do for anyone visiting the region. It's an opportunity to indulge in exceptional food, learn about the local culture, and connect with the beauty of the outback.
