Arctic Adventures in Tromsø: A Photographer's Dream
Day 4: Arctic Huskies and Sami Stories: A Day of Wilderness and Culture
Experience the thrill of dog sledding and immerse yourself in Sami culture in Tromsø's stunning landscapes. A day of adventure and tradition.
A Day of Arctic Wonder
Today was a symphony of Arctic experiences, blending the raw energy of dog sledding with the profound cultural richness of the Sami people. It's days like these that remind me why I traded the predictability of a 9-to-5 job for the open road and the stories waiting to be discovered. I woke up with an extra spring in my step, eager to embrace whatever adventures Tromsø had in store for us today.
Our day started with a hearty breakfast at Walter & Leonard. This charming spot, nestled in a historic building, is known for its blend of Norwegian and French cuisine. I opted for a traditional Norwegian breakfast, savoring the fresh flavors and cozy atmosphere before our wilderness adventure. Liam went for something more French-inspired, a croissant with jam, and we both enjoyed strong coffees to prepare for the day ahead.

Fueled up and ready to go, we headed to the Tromsø Wilderness Centre for our dog sledding experience. The crisp Arctic air invigorated us as we arrived at the center, greeted by the enthusiastic barks and howls of the huskies. I've always felt a deep connection with animals, and these dogs were no exception. Their energy was infectious, a mix of excitement and anticipation for the run ahead.

We were given a brief but thorough introduction to dog sledding. Since there was no snow on the ground, we would be trying dog sledding with wagons. Turns out that the dogs still need exercise even when there is no snow and this is a great way for them to stay in shape. We were instructed on how to sit in the wagon and how to interact with the dogs. The staff also shared insights into the care and training of these incredible animals, deepening my appreciation for the bond between humans and huskies.
As we set off, the power of the dogs was palpable. Guiding the wagon through the wilderness was an exhilarating experience, the landscape unfolding before us in a tapestry of autumnal colors. The trails wound through forests painted in hues of gold and russet red, a stunning contrast to the clear blue sky. It was a bit different than the snow-covered landscapes I had imagined, but the beauty of the Arctic in early September was undeniable.
It is not down in any map; true places never are.
After the exhilarating dog sledding, we were ready for lunch. We stopped by Burgr, a local burger joint known for its retro vibe and delicious burgers. The place was small and quirky, decorated with vintage posters and offering a fun, laid-back atmosphere. I went for the Mario burger, while Liam chose the Bullet Bill. We devoured our meals, enjoying the tasty burgers and the lively ambiance of the restaurant.

With our appetites satisfied, we ventured to Tromsø Lapland, eager to immerse ourselves in Sami culture. This visit was particularly meaningful to me, given my Scandinavian heritage. Learning about the Sami way of life, their traditions, and their deep connection to the land resonated deeply.

We were greeted by a Sami guide who shared stories of his ancestors, their reindeer herding practices, and their unique relationship with nature. He spoke of their challenges and triumphs, their resilience in the face of adversity, and their commitment to preserving their cultural heritage. I was particularly moved by their reverence for the land and their sustainable way of life, values that align with my own.
We had the opportunity to try traditional Sami food, including reindeer stew. The flavors were rich and hearty, a testament to the resourcefulness of the Sami people in utilizing the resources available to them. We also learned about Sami crafts, admiring the intricate details of their clothing and tools.
As the day drew to a close, we headed to Restaurant Smak AS for dinner. This intimate restaurant, with only 18 seats, is known for its modern take on Northern Norwegian flavors. The menu changes every two weeks, focusing on local produce. We opted for the tasting menu, eager to experience the culinary artistry of the chefs.

Each dish was a revelation, a celebration of the region's rich food culture. The flavors were bold and nuanced, the presentation impeccable. It was a culinary journey that delighted our senses and deepened our appreciation for the unique terroir of Northern Norway.
To cap off the evening, we decided to check out Bastard Bar. This underground bar is known for its live music scene and alternative vibe. Tonight, there was a band called Storytellers playing. We enjoyed the music, chatting with locals and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of Tromsø's nightlife.
