Echoes of the Lost City

As our ten-day trek comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey Liam and I embarked upon to Choquequirao. This adventure has been more than just a hike; it's been a profound immersion into the heart of Incan history, culture, and the breathtaking beauty of the Peruvian Andes. Each day has unfolded like a chapter in an ancient story, filled with challenges, discoveries, and moments of pure awe. Today, we explored the last vestiges of this magnificent city, savoring the final glimpses of its stone structures and panoramic views.

Our final day began with a hearty breakfast at Aqllawasi Chichería - Museo in Cusco. We enjoyed traditional Peruvian fare, fueling up for a day of exploration and reflection. The chichería itself was charming, filled with artifacts and stories of the region's past. It was the perfect spot to start our day, grounding us in the history we'd been trekking through for the past ten days.

After breakfast, Liam and I decided to revisit some of our favorite spots within Choquequirao. We spent a good amount of time at the llama terraces, marveling at the ingenuity of the Inca people who built these structures into the steep mountainsides. The terraces, with their intricate stonework and precise engineering, are a testament to the Incas' deep understanding of agriculture and their ability to thrive in challenging environments.

We also hiked up to the main plaza one last time, soaking in the panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and snow-capped peaks. The sheer scale of Choquequirao is truly impressive, and it's easy to see why it's often referred to as Machu Picchu's sister city. What sets Choquequirao apart, though, is its relative isolation. Unlike Machu Picchu, which can be crowded with tourists, Choquequirao remains a hidden gem, offering a more intimate and solitary experience.

The mountains whisper secrets to those who listen with their hearts.

As we wandered through the ruins, I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to the people who once lived here. I imagined them going about their daily lives, tending to their crops, worshipping their gods, and building this incredible city stone by stone. It's humbling to think about the amount of work and dedication that went into creating Choquequirao, and it makes me appreciate the Incas' achievements even more.

For lunch, we enjoyed a meal at El museo de la papa rest, which translates to 'The Potato Museum Restaurant'. As a photographer passionate about sustainability, I was fascinated by the incredible variety of potatoes on display. Peru is known as the land of the potato, and this restaurant celebrates the country's rich agricultural heritage. Liam and I savored dishes made with different types of potatoes, each with its unique flavor and texture. It was a delicious and educational experience, highlighting the importance of biodiversity and sustainable farming practices.

In the afternoon, we started our journey back to Cusco. The descent was challenging, but the views were spectacular. We passed through lush cloud forests, crossed rushing rivers, and marveled at the diverse flora and fauna of the Andes. Along the way, we met local farmers and villagers who shared their stories and traditions with us. It was a reminder of the importance of cultural exchange and the value of connecting with people from different backgrounds.

As the sun began to set, we arrived in Cusco, tired but exhilarated. We checked into our hotel and freshened up before heading out for our final dinner in Peru. We chose Ponchos Machupicchu Restaurant, drawn in by the promise of authentic Andean cuisine. We weren't disappointed. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, and the food was absolutely delicious. I savored every bite of my alpaca steak, while Liam enjoyed a hearty quinoa soup. It was the perfect way to end our culinary journey through Peru.

After dinner, we decided to experience Cusco's nightlife. We visited Ukukus Music Club - Bar, a popular spot known for its live music and vibrant atmosphere. We enjoyed listening to local musicians play traditional Peruvian tunes, and we even tried our hand at dancing. It was a fun and lively way to celebrate the end of our trek and immerse ourselves in the local culture.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I'm filled with a mix of emotions. I'm sad that our Choquequirao adventure is over, but I'm also incredibly grateful for the experiences we've had and the memories we've made. This trek has challenged us physically and mentally, but it has also rewarded us with stunning landscapes, rich cultural insights, and a deeper connection to the natural world. I know that the lessons we've learned and the friendships we've forged will stay with us long after we've left Peru.

Reflecting on our journey, I realize how much we've grown as travelers and as individuals. We've learned to appreciate the simple things in life, like a warm meal, a comfortable bed, and the company of good friends. We've also learned to be more patient, resilient, and adaptable in the face of challenges. And most importantly, we've learned to embrace the unknown and to find joy in the unexpected.

October in Cusco is a vibrant month, with various festivals and celebrations taking place. The Fiesta de San Francisco, held on October 3rd and 4th, honors St. Francis of Assisi with religious ceremonies, music, and dances in Cusco's main square. The Lord of the Miracles is also celebrated throughout October with Masses and processions. On October 31st, Cusco celebrates both Halloween and Día de la Canción Criolla, a day honoring traditional Peruvian music.

I will always remember the warmth of the Peruvian people, the deliciousness of the food, and the awe-inspiring beauty of the Andes. Choquequirao is a place that will forever hold a special place in my heart, and I encourage anyone who's looking for an off-the-beaten-path adventure to add it to their bucket list.

As we prepare to leave Peru tomorrow, I'm already dreaming of our next adventure. But for now, I'm content to savor the memories of Choquequirao and to reflect on the lessons I've learned. This trek has been a journey of a lifetime, and I'm so grateful to have shared it with Liam and all of you.

Before I sign off, I want to share a few practical tips for anyone who's planning a trek to Choquequirao:

* **Pack light:** You'll be carrying your own gear, so it's important to pack only the essentials.
* **Bring plenty of water:** Staying hydrated is crucial, especially at high altitudes.
* **Wear sturdy hiking boots:** The trails can be steep and rocky, so you'll need good ankle support.
* **Be prepared for all types of weather:** The weather in the Andes can change quickly, so it's important to bring layers of clothing.
* **Hire a local guide:** A guide can provide valuable insights into the history and culture of the region, and they can also help you navigate the trails safely.

And finally, be sure to take the time to slow down, to appreciate the beauty of your surroundings, and to connect with the people you meet along the way. Choquequirao is more than just a destination; it's an experience that will change you for the better.

Until next time, happy travels!
