A Day of Peaks, Forests, and Culinary Delights
Today was a day of exploration and immersion in the stunning landscapes of Þórsmörk. Liam and I set out early, eager to experience the natural beauty and rich history of this Icelandic paradise. From challenging hikes to delightful local cuisine, every moment was a testament to the magic of Iceland.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Lindin in Hella. It was a cozy start, fueling up with traditional Icelandic fare before our adventures. The restaurant was charming, and the food was delicious, setting a perfect tone for the day ahead. I always appreciate a good breakfast; it’s the best way to prepare for a day of hiking and photography. We savored every bite, knowing we needed the energy for the trails ahead.
After breakfast, we drove towards Þorolfsfell, one of the prominent mountains in the area. The hike up Þorolfsfell was challenging but incredibly rewarding. The trail wound through diverse terrain, from rocky paths to lush green slopes. As we ascended, the panoramic views of Þórsmörk unfolded before us, revealing the vastness and beauty of the valley. I couldn’t resist stopping every few minutes to capture the scenery with my camera. Liam, ever the patient one, waited for me, occasionally pointing out interesting geological formations or unique flora.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.
Reaching the summit, we were greeted by a breathtaking vista. The surrounding mountains, glaciers, and riverbeds created a surreal landscape. It felt like standing on top of the world, with the wind carrying whispers of ancient tales. I took several photos, trying to capture the essence of the moment, but some experiences are simply too grand to be confined to a frame. We sat there for a while, just soaking it all in, feeling grateful for the opportunity to witness such natural splendor.
Descending Þorolfsfell, we decided to explore Þrastaskógur, a nearby forest known for its serene beauty. The contrast between the open mountain and the dense woodland was striking. Walking through Þrastaskógur felt like entering another world. The trees provided a cool canopy, filtering the sunlight and creating a magical atmosphere. The air was filled with the scent of damp earth and pine, a refreshing change from the crisp mountain air. We strolled along the winding paths, listening to the rustling leaves and the occasional birdsong. It was a peaceful interlude, a chance to connect with nature on a more intimate level.

For lunch, we stopped at Eldstó Art Cafe / Restaurant in Hella. This place was a delightful surprise, combining delicious food with local art. I had the Icelandic lamb soup, which was hearty and flavorful, while Liam opted for a sandwich. The café had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and the walls were adorned with beautiful paintings and pottery. It was a perfect spot to relax and recharge after our morning adventures. I even picked up a small ceramic piece as a souvenir, a reminder of our lovely lunch.

In the late afternoon, we decided to visit Gullfoss. While not directly in Þórsmörk, it was close enough for a detour, and I had always wanted to see it. The sheer power and grandeur of Gullfoss were awe-inspiring. The cascading water thundered into the canyon below, creating a misty spectacle. We walked along the designated paths, taking in the different viewpoints and marveling at the raw energy of nature. It's easy to see why it is one of Iceland's most popular attractions. The Panorama Restaurant offered stunning views, and we enjoyed a satisfying dinner there. I had the grilled salmon, which was cooked to perfection, and Liam chose a burger. The food was good, but the real highlight was the panoramic view of the surrounding landscape.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to check out Grillby's in Hella for a nightcap. It was a cozy little bar with a friendly atmosphere. We chatted with some locals, sharing stories and laughter. It was a great way to wind down after a long day of hiking and exploring. I always enjoy these moments of connection, finding common ground with people from different walks of life.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Tindfjöll and Fremri-Fellsfoss. I am particularly excited about Fremri-Fellsfoss; I've heard the views are spectacular. And for dinner, we're heading to Kol Restaurant, which I've read has a fantastic menu.
Back at our campsite, I reflected on the day’s adventures. Þórsmörk had once again exceeded my expectations, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and culinary delights. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this incredible journey and the opportunity to share it with Liam.
Today was a reminder of why I love Iceland so much. Its landscapes are not just visually stunning but also deeply enriching, offering a sense of peace and connection that I find nowhere else. Every hike, every meal, every conversation adds another layer to my appreciation for this extraordinary place. And with Liam by my side, every moment becomes even more special. As we continue our adventure, I am filled with anticipation for what tomorrow will bring, knowing that there are still so many hidden gems waiting to be discovered in this magical land.
I almost forgot to mention – I realized today that I forgot to pack extra memory cards for my camera. Rookie mistake! I’ll have to be extra careful with storage from now on. And Liam reminded me that I also forgot the sunscreen. Note to self: always double-check the essentials!
Goodnight from Þórsmörk!
