Exploring the Charm of San Miguel de Allende with Friends
Day 7: A Day of History, Music, and Culinary Delights in San Miguel de Allende
Immerse yourself in San Miguel's rich culture: Explore museums, savor authentic cuisine, and discover hidden gems with friends.
Echoes of the Past, Tastes of the Present
Today was a vibrant blend of history, music, and incredible food here in San Miguel de Allende. It’s amazing how much this city has to offer, and I’m so glad I get to experience it all with my friends. Each day brings a new layer of understanding and appreciation for Mexican culture, and today was no exception.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Momma, a local spot known for its Italian cuisine. It might seem odd to start a day in Mexico with Italian food, but the reviews were too good to pass up! I opted for the pesto pasta, and it was absolutely delicious. Olivia would have loved the chocolate cake, I will need to bring her here one day. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.

From there, we headed to the Casa Museo José Alfredo Jiménez. As a big fan of Mexican music, this museum was a must-see for me. José Alfredo Jiménez was an iconic singer-songwriter, and the museum is located in the house where he was born. The museum showcases his life, music, photographs, and personal belongings. It was fascinating to learn about his journey and the impact he had on Mexican culture. The Casa Museo José Alfredo Jiménez is a cultural and material legacy that allows visitors to recreate the life of Jiménez, that renowned Mexican who accompanies us at all Mexican festivals held in Mexico and in any country where a Mexican is found.

Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything.
After immersing ourselves in the world of José Alfredo Jiménez, we made our way to the Museo Histórico Casa de Allende. This museum is housed in the birthplace of Ignacio Allende, a key figure in the Mexican War of Independence. It was fascinating to walk through the rooms where Allende grew up and to learn about his role in the fight for independence. The exhibits included artifacts, documents, and artwork that shed light on the history of San Miguel de Allende and its significance in the independence movement.

The Museo Histórico Casa de Allende offered a comprehensive look into the life of Ignacio Allende and the turbulent history of San Miguel. Built in the 18th century, this house museum presents a detailed account of Allende’s contributions to Mexican independence, alongside displays of 16th, 17th, and 18th-century furnishings and paintings. I found it particularly interesting to learn about Allende's early life and the factors that motivated him to join the independence movement. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, and admission is quite affordable. Spending a couple of hours here gave us a solid understanding of San Miguel's historical importance.
For lunch, we decided to try Mi Bistro 300, a Mediterranean restaurant with Mexican influences. The reviews I read online raved about their fish tacos and the roasted tomato soup, so I had to try them both. The fish tacos were indeed delicious – the fish was perfectly cooked, and the sauce had just the right amount of spice. The roasted tomato soup was also a standout, with a depth of flavor that was simply amazing. The atmosphere at Mi Bistro 300 was relaxed and welcoming, and it was clear that the owners took pride in their food and service. It’s run by a team of nine partners, each bringing their expertise to the table, making it a truly unique dining experience.

After lunch, we strolled through the streets of San Miguel, soaking in the sights and sounds of the city. We stumbled upon Tienda Madre Tierra Correo, a charming shop that sells locally made crafts and souvenirs. I picked up a few small gifts for Olivia and Ethan, wanting to bring back a piece of San Miguel de Allende for them. The shop had a wide variety of items, from handmade jewelry to traditional Mexican textiles, and it was fun to browse through the different offerings. I even found a small, hand-painted alebrije (a brightly colored Mexican folk art sculpture) that I thought Ethan would love.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Trazo 1810 for dinner. This rooftop restaurant offers stunning views of the city, and I had heard that the food was exceptional. We arrived just in time to watch the sunset, and the view of the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel bathed in golden light was simply breathtaking. For dinner, I ordered the grilled octopus, and it was cooked to perfection – tender and flavorful, with a hint of smokiness. My friends tried the short ribs and the lamb, and they were equally impressed with their meals. The service at Trazo 1810 was impeccable, and the overall atmosphere was elegant and sophisticated.

Trazo 1810 certainly lived up to its reputation. The rooftop setting provided a 360-degree view of San Miguel, making it a perfect spot for a memorable dinner. The restaurant is known for its modern cuisine with European influences and Asian touches, and Chef José Francisco González clearly knows his craft. The food was beautifully presented and incredibly flavorful, making it a highlight of our culinary experiences in San Miguel. The restaurant also boasts a stylish indoor dining area, but the open-air terrace is where you want to be for the panoramic views.
One thing I appreciate about San Miguel is how walkable it is. We spent the entire day exploring on foot, and it was a great way to discover hidden gems and soak in the local atmosphere. The colorful buildings, the cobblestone streets, and the friendly people all contribute to the city’s unique charm. Even though it’s a popular tourist destination, San Miguel still manages to retain its authentic Mexican character.
Tomorrow, we’re planning to visit the Ignacio Ramírez Market, the Templo del Oratorio de San Felipe Neri, and the Plaza de la Soledad. I’m also looking forward to checking out Tunki by Handshake, a bar that I’ve heard has amazing cocktails. I have a feeling that tomorrow will be just as exciting and memorable as today.
As I reflect on today’s adventures, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience San Miguel de Allende with my friends. It’s moments like these that make life so rich and rewarding. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!
“To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.” – Aldous Huxley. This quote resonates deeply with my experiences here, as I continue to uncover the beauty and complexity of Mexican culture, one day at a time.
I'm excited to see what adventures tomorrow will bring, and I'm especially looking forward to sharing them all with you. Until then, ¡adiós from San Miguel de Allende!
I'm also making a mental note to buy a Spanish phrasebook and a reusable water bottle. It would have been useful to have a phrasebook when trying to communicate with some of the locals, and a reusable water bottle would have helped me stay hydrated while exploring the city.
It's nights like tonight, enjoying the company of friends under a starlit sky, that remind me why I love to travel. The shared laughter, the engaging conversations, and the sense of camaraderie create memories that I know I'll cherish for years to come. As much as I miss Olivia and Ethan, I know that this trip is also a chance for me to recharge and reconnect with myself, so that I can return home refreshed and ready to embrace whatever challenges lie ahead.
