A Day of Discovery in San Miguel

Today was all about diving deeper into the heart of San Miguel. After several days of seeing the main attractions, Olivia and I wanted to experience the everyday life of the city. We ventured beyond the tourist hotspots, seeking out the places where locals gather, trade, and connect. It turned out to be a day filled with vibrant colors, rich history, and delightful surprises.

Our day began, as most do, with a hearty breakfast. Bistro San Miguel was the perfect spot to fuel up for our adventures. It’s a charming place, and I was particularly impressed with their rooftop seating area. The weather was perfect, with a gentle breeze and warm sunshine, making it an ideal setting to enjoy our meal. I opted for the huevos rancheros, a classic Mexican breakfast dish that never disappoints. Olivia went for the lentil burger, and she was very happy with her choice. We lingered over our coffees, soaking in the atmosphere and planning our day.

With our appetites satisfied, we set off for the Ignacio Ramírez Market. It's only a short walk from the main square, but it felt like stepping into a different world. The market was a riot of colors, sounds, and smells. Stalls overflowed with fresh produce, spices, meats, and all sorts of other goods. It was a feast for the senses! We wandered through the aisles, marveling at the variety of products on offer. I was particularly fascinated by the different types of chilies, each with its own unique flavor and heat level. Olivia, ever the practical one, was on the lookout for some souvenirs and found a beautiful hand-embroidered blouse at a very reasonable price. The market was bustling with locals doing their daily shopping, and it was a great opportunity to observe the rhythms of daily life in San Miguel. I managed to practice my Spanish, haggling for a few trinkets and chatting with the vendors. It's amazing how a simple conversation can bridge cultural gaps and create a sense of connection. I even sampled some local cheese from one of the stalls; it was incredibly flavorful and creamy.

Leaving the market, we made our way to the Templo del Oratorio de San Felipe Neri. I had read about its historical significance, and I was eager to see it for myself. The church is a beautiful example of Baroque architecture, with intricate carvings and ornate decorations. As we stepped inside, we were immediately struck by the sense of peace and tranquility. The air was cool and still, a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the city. We admired the gilded altars, the stained-glass windows, and the beautiful religious artwork. It was a place that invited contemplation and reflection. The Oratorio de San Felipe Neri has a rich history, dating back to the 18th century. It was founded by Father Luis Felipe Neri de Alfaro, a local priest who was inspired by the teachings of Saint Philip Neri. The church played an important role in the spiritual life of San Miguel, and it continues to be a place of worship and pilgrimage today. The architecture reflects the Baroque style popular at the time, with its ornate details and dramatic use of light and shadow. The church's interior is adorned with gilded altars, intricate carvings, and beautiful religious paintings. It's a place that invites visitors to step back in time and appreciate the artistry and craftsmanship of the past. I was particularly moved by the story of Father Neri, a humble man who dedicated his life to serving the poor and marginalized. His legacy lives on in the church, which continues to be a beacon of hope and compassion.

Sometimes, the best travel experiences are found in the simple act of wandering, observing, and connecting with the local culture.

After soaking in the serenity of the church, we strolled over to Plaza de la Soledad. It's a small, unassuming square, but it has a certain charm. The plaza is surrounded by trees and benches, making it a perfect spot to relax and people-watch. We sat for a while, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and observing the locals going about their daily routines. I noticed a group of children playing a game of tag, their laughter echoing through the square. An elderly couple sat on a bench, holding hands and chatting quietly. A street vendor sold balloons and trinkets. It was a slice of everyday life in San Miguel, and I found it incredibly captivating. I learned that the Plaza de la Soledad has a long and fascinating history. It was once the site of a monastery, and it has been used for various purposes over the centuries. Today, it's a popular gathering place for locals and tourists alike. The plaza is often the site of cultural events and festivals, adding to its vibrant atmosphere. As we sat there, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this special place. It was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing famous landmarks and attractions; it's also about immersing oneself in the local culture and connecting with the people who call this place home. As we were leaving the plaza, we noticed a small artisan shop tucked away in a corner. We stepped inside and discovered a treasure trove of handmade crafts, including pottery, textiles, and jewelry. I purchased a beautiful ceramic bowl, while Olivia found a pair of silver earrings. It was a perfect way to support the local artisans and take home a unique souvenir of our visit.

For lunch, we headed to El Pegaso, a restaurant recommended by several locals. It's known for its eclectic menu, featuring both Mexican and international dishes. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, and we were immediately seated at a table on the rooftop terrace. The view was fantastic, overlooking the city's rooftops and the iconic Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel. I decided to try the Chiles en Nogada, a traditional Mexican dish made with poblano peppers stuffed with a mixture of fruits and nuts, covered in a creamy walnut sauce and garnished with pomegranate seeds. It was a symphony of flavors and textures, and I savored every bite. Olivia opted for the enchiladas, which were equally delicious. The service was friendly and efficient, and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. El Pegaso has a long and storied history, dating back over 25 years. It's owned by Robin, an American, and Beto, a Mexican, and their combined culinary talents are evident in the restaurant's diverse menu. The restaurant is popular with both expats and locals, and it's a great place to experience the vibrant culinary scene of San Miguel. I was particularly impressed by the restaurant's commitment to using fresh, local ingredients. The flavors were vibrant and authentic, and it was clear that the chefs took pride in their craft. As we finished our lunch, we lingered over our drinks, enjoying the view and the pleasant conversation. It was a perfect moment, a reminder of why we love to travel and explore new places.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to treat ourselves to a drink at Tunki by Handshake, a rooftop bar known for its fantastic views and creative cocktails. Perched atop Casa de Sierra Nevada, a Belmond Hotel, the bar offered a stunning panoramic vista of the city. The setting was chic and sophisticated, with comfortable seating and stylish décor. I ordered a cocktail called Made in Oaxaca, while Olivia chose the Flowerbomb. Both drinks were expertly crafted, with unique and complex flavors. As we sipped our cocktails, we watched the sun begin to set over the city. The sky was ablaze with color, and the view was simply breathtaking. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration. Tunki by Handshake is a collaboration with Mexico City's renowned Handshake Speakeasy, which is ranked among the world's best bars. The bar's San Miguel outpost comes with an incredible dose of style and some spectacular views. The menu is a dynamic fusion of Peruvian and Mexican flavors, featuring inventive cocktails that reinterpret classic favorites. For dinner, we decided to try Ocre, a restaurant recommended for its modern Mexican cuisine and lively atmosphere. The restaurant had three distinct areas: a piano room, a terrace with stunning views, and a nightclub. We chose to dine on the terrace, where we could enjoy the cool evening air and the twinkling lights of the city. The menu was innovative and creative, featuring dishes that blended traditional Mexican flavors with modern techniques. I ordered the roasted duck, while Olivia opted for the grilled octopus. Both dishes were beautifully presented and incredibly flavorful. The service was attentive and professional, and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Ocre is known as a gathering spot for celebrities, adding a touch of glamour to the dining experience. The restaurant's unique atmosphere and exceptional cuisine make it a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to San Miguel de Allende.
