Exploring the Charm of San Miguel de Allende with Friends
Day 9: A Ghost Town Reborn and Lavender Dreams: My Final Day in San Miguel
Explore the haunting beauty of Mineral de Pozos and the fragrant fields of El Proyecto de Lavanda on my last day in San Miguel.
Whispers of the Past, Scents of Serenity
As my adventure in San Miguel de Allende draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences I've had over the past nine days. From the vibrant streets of San Miguel to the tranquil landscapes just beyond, this journey has been a tapestry of culture, history, and unforgettable moments shared with friends. Today, we ventured beyond the familiar cobblestone paths to discover a ghost town with a pulse and a lavender farm brimming with tranquility.
Our final day began, as many others did, with a delightful breakfast. This time, we chose Cumpanio, a local spot known for its pastries and coffee. The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the air as we stepped inside. I opted for a simple but satisfying breakfast of huevos rancheros and a strong cup of coffee to fuel our day of exploration. The cafe was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day with a delicious meal. It was the perfect way to kick off our last adventure in Mexico.
With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off for Mineral de Pozos, a former mining town about an hour outside San Miguel. The drive itself was scenic, with rolling hills and glimpses of rural Mexican life. As we approached Pozos, the landscape transformed into something out of a movie set. Abandoned buildings stood as silent witnesses to a bygone era, their walls crumbling and roofs missing. It was a stark contrast to the vibrant colors of San Miguel, but equally captivating.

Mineral de Pozos is a town with a rich history, once a thriving mining hub in the 16th century. The Jesuits played a significant role in its development, but after several booms and busts, the town was largely abandoned. Today, it's experiencing a revival as artists and tourists are drawn to its unique charm and serene atmosphere. As we wandered through the town, we explored the remnants of its past, including the impressive ruins of old mines and haciendas.
Sometimes, the most beautiful stories are found in the places that time has almost forgotten.
The main plaza, Plaza Zaragoza, was surprisingly lively, with a few shops and restaurants catering to visitors. We visited the Museo de Historia to learn more about the town's past. Although the museum was small and primarily in Spanish, it provided valuable insights into the mining industry and the lives of the people who once called Pozos home. It's hard to imagine that this quiet, almost deserted town was once home to as many as 70,000 people.
One of the most striking features of Mineral de Pozos is the unfinished church, a testament to the town's unrealized ambitions. The church stands tall against the desert landscape, a symbol of hope and resilience. I couldn't help but feel a sense of melancholy as I gazed at its incomplete facade, imagining what it must have been like during its heyday. Despite its abandoned state, Mineral de Pozos possesses a unique beauty that's both haunting and inspiring.
After immersing ourselves in the history of Mineral de Pozos, we journeyed to El Proyecto de Lavanda, a lavender farm located just outside the town. The contrast between the arid landscape of Pozos and the fragrant fields of lavender was striking. As we stepped onto the property, we were greeted by rows upon rows of lavender plants, their purple blooms swaying gently in the breeze. The air was filled with the calming scent of lavender, instantly transporting us to a state of relaxation.

El Proyecto de Lavanda is more than just a farm; it's a sanctuary for the senses. We strolled through the fields, admiring the beauty of the lavender and learning about its cultivation. The farm also produces a variety of lavender-based products, from essential oils to soaps to culinary treats. I couldn't resist purchasing a few souvenirs, including a lavender-scented candle and a bottle of lavender honey. Olivia would love this, I thought, picturing her unwinding after a long shift with the soothing scent of lavender.
The farm offers a range of activities, including workshops and guided tours. We opted for a leisurely stroll through the fields, taking in the breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. The setting was incredibly peaceful, a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of city life. It was the perfect place to reflect on our journey and appreciate the simple pleasures of nature. I even sampled some lavender ice cream, which was surprisingly refreshing and delicious.
For lunch, we headed to Maria Xoconostle, a restaurant in San Miguel known for its traditional Mexican cuisine. The restaurant is located in the Hotel Posada Carmina, which is a beautiful colonial-style building with a lovely patio. I ordered the enchiladas mineras, a local specialty, and they were bursting with flavor. The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was charming, with a fountain and live music adding to the ambiance. It was a delightful culinary experience that perfectly captured the essence of San Miguel.
After lunch, we took some time to explore Abrazos Boutique, a shop that features original, handmade products using fine cotton fabrics printed with iconic images from Mexican culture. I picked up a few gifts for Ethan and Olivia, knowing they would appreciate the unique designs and quality craftsmanship. It's always a pleasure to support local artisans and bring home souvenirs that are both beautiful and meaningful.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Antigua Trattoria Romana for our farewell dinner. This Italian restaurant is known for its extensive menu and cozy atmosphere. I ordered the linguine al frutti de mare, which was packed with fresh seafood and bursting with flavor. The meal was a perfect blend of Italian and Mexican influences, a testament to the city's diverse culinary scene.
Reflecting on the past nine days, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences I've had and the memories I've made. San Miguel de Allende is a city that has captured my heart, a place where culture, history, and beauty converge. From the vibrant streets to the tranquil landscapes, this journey has been a true feast for the senses. I'm already looking forward to my next visit, whenever that may be. Maybe I'll bring Olivia and Ethan next time, so they can experience the magic of San Miguel for themselves.
And with that, our adventure comes to an end. Tomorrow, we'll be heading back to the UK, filled with memories of stunning architecture, delicious food, and the warmth of the Mexican people. It's been an incredible journey, one that I will cherish for years to come. Until next time, San Miguel de Allende!
