A Day of Coastal Wonders
Today was nothing short of spectacular as we continued our exploration of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. The raw beauty of Iceland never ceases to amaze me, and today’s adventures in and around Arnarstapi were a perfect example of why I love this country so much. The blend of dramatic landscapes, intriguing folklore, and delightful culinary experiences made for a day that I’ll cherish for a long time.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Arnarstapi Center and Snjófell Restaurant. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, perfect for fueling up before a day of exploration. I opted for the Icelandic meat soup, a local staple, and it was absolutely delicious. The warm broth and tender lamb were exactly what I needed to start the day off right. Olivia went for the fish and chips, which she claimed were some of the best she’s ever had. Ethan, of course, chose pancakes, a familiar comfort that always makes him happy. After breakfast, we were ready to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of Arnarstapi.

Our first stop was the Arnarstapi Cliff Viewpoint. As we approached, the landscape transformed into a dramatic display of basalt columns and rugged coastline. The wind was strong, carrying the scent of the sea, and the waves crashed against the cliffs with a powerful roar. It was invigorating! The views were simply breathtaking – the kind that makes you feel incredibly small yet completely connected to nature. I couldn't resist snapping a few photos, trying to capture the sheer magnificence of the scenery. It's moments like these that remind me why I love photography so much. Capturing the beauty of the natural world and sharing it with others is something I find incredibly fulfilling.

We spent a good hour wandering along the cliffs, marveling at the unique rock formations and the countless seabirds nesting in the area. Ethan was particularly fascinated by the birds, trying to identify each species with the help of his travel guidebook. He's turning into quite the little ornithologist! The coastal walk from Hellnar to Arnarstapi is something I would highly recommend. It’s an easy 2.5 km stroll that allows you to fully appreciate the stunning scenery. The ancient lava fields and unique rock formations, like the Gatklettur arch, are truly awe-inspiring.
Arnarstapi is a place where the rugged coastline meets mythical tales, creating an unforgettable experience for every traveler.
Next on our itinerary was the Bárður Snæfellsás Statue. This massive stone structure depicts the mythical protector of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Created by sculptor Ragnar Kjartansson, the statue stands six meters tall and portrays Bárður holding a large rock, symbolizing his connection to the earth and his strength. Bárður Snæfellsás is an important figure in Icelandic folklore, a half-troll, half-man known for his strength and wisdom. According to the Saga of Bárður Snæfellsás, he was the first settler of this area and eventually retreated to the Snæfellsjökull glacier, becoming a protector of the peninsula.

I was captivated by the stories surrounding him and his connection to the glacier. It added a layer of mystique to the already stunning landscape. The statue overlooks the dramatic coastline, and the sea captures the essence of Bárður as a tall, imposing figure. It serves as a symbol of Icelandic folklore and mythology and a popular tourist attraction. Learning about Bárður’s saga gave us a deeper appreciation for the area. It’s fascinating how much the history and folklore are intertwined with the natural landscape in Iceland. Standing there, looking at the statue and the surrounding cliffs, I could almost feel the presence of this mythical guardian.
For lunch, we headed to Stapinn, a family-run restaurant in Arnarstapi. This charming restaurant is known for its warm ambiance and traditional Icelandic dishes with a modern twist. The menu featured a variety of dishes, including fresh seafood, hearty meat options, and vegetarian selections, all made with locally sourced ingredients. I decided to try the Plokkfiskur, a traditional Icelandic fish stew, and it was absolutely divine. The creamy texture and rich flavor were a perfect representation of Icelandic comfort food. Olivia opted for the lamb, which was cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. Ethan, surprisingly, chose the fish and chips again – he just couldn’t get enough! The restaurant itself had a cozy interior, adorned with rustic decor, inviting guests to relax and savor their meals while enjoying the natural beauty of the surrounding landscapes. After our satisfying meal, we took a leisurely stroll around the village of Arnarstapi.

In the evening, we had dinner reservations at Sjávarkjallarinn. This seafood restaurant is known for its cozy atmosphere and fresh, local ingredients. Although it was a bit of a drive, it was definitely worth it. I savored every bite of the seafood soup, which was rich, flavorful, and incredibly comforting after a day spent exploring the windy coastline. Olivia chose the Arctic char, while Ethan enjoyed a simple but tasty pasta dish. The restaurant had a warm and inviting ambiance, with nautical-themed decor and friendly staff. It was the perfect place to relax and recharge after a day of exploration and adventure.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we decided to check out Hjá Góðu Fólki, a local bar known for its cozy atmosphere and artistic flair. We enjoyed a local beer while chatting with some of the locals. It was a great way to get a sense of the community and learn more about Icelandic culture. The bar was small and intimate, with walls adorned with local artwork and shelves filled with books. It felt like stepping into someone’s living room, and we immediately felt at home. Ethan, of course, was fascinated by the artwork and spent a good half-hour examining each piece. He even struck up a conversation with one of the local artists, who was more than happy to share his insights and inspirations.

As I reflect on today’s adventures, I’m filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such incredible beauty and culture. The Snæfellsnes Peninsula is truly a magical place, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings. We plan to visit Kirkjufell Mountain and Kirkjufellsfossar. I’ve seen so many photos of these iconic landmarks, and I’m excited to finally see them in person. I’m also hoping to do a bit of knitting at Kirkjufell knitting, a local shop that I’ve heard great things about. Until then, góða nótt from Arnarstapi!
I must remember to buy sunglasses and a portable phone charger as I forgot them at home. I think I will buy them tomorrow while visiting Kirkjufell Mountain and Kirkjufellsfossar.
This trip is really allowing me to connect to my passion of travel, as I get older it is very easy to get stuck in a rut of work and family life, but this trip is allowing me to expand my horizons and find out more about the world.
I hope that Olivia and Ethan are also enjoying the trip, I know that Ethan is having a great time, he is very interested in all the attractions and landmarks we have been visiting. Olivia also seems to be having a good time, she is very interested in the local culture and cuisine.
