Kyoto to Nara: A Day of Discoveries

Today was a day of contrasts, blending the quiet contemplation of Kyoto's temples with the lively charm of Nara's deer park. It's amazing how a short train ride can transport you to entirely different worlds, each with its own unique appeal. Join me as I recount our adventures, from serene gardens to sake tastings and unforgettable encounters with nature.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Fujiya. It was a delightful start, setting us up perfectly for a day of exploration. I opted for their special breakfast, which was limited to only ten people. It was a great way to start the day.

Finding Peace at Hōnenin Temple

Our first stop was Hōnenin Temple, a hidden gem tucked away from the main tourist trails. This temple is known for its serene atmosphere and beautiful gardens, offering a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. As we approached the temple, the path was lined with lush greenery, creating a tranquil ambiance that immediately calmed our senses.

The entrance to Hōnenin is marked by a picturesque, thatch-covered gate adorned with moss. Crossing the Byakusadan, the twin white sand mounds with intricate seasonal designs, felt like a purification ritual, preparing us for the temple's serene embrace. Ethan was particularly fascinated by the geometric patterns etched into the sand, asking endless questions about their meaning and the artistry involved. Olivia and I appreciated the quiet atmosphere, a welcome change from some of the more crowded spots we've visited.

The temple grounds were meticulously maintained, with moss-covered gardens and towering trees creating a sense of ancient tranquility. We wandered slowly, taking in the beauty of the surroundings. The soft sunlight filtering through the leaves cast a magical glow, making everything seem a bit more enchanting. The main hall, which is only open to the public twice a year, was closed during our visit, but the beauty of the gardens more than made up for it.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quietest places.

A Toast to Tradition: Gekkeikan Ōkura Sake Museum

Next on our itinerary was the Gekkeikan Ōkura Sake Museum, a celebration of Japan's beloved rice wine. Located in the Fushimi district, known for its sake breweries, the museum offered a fascinating glimpse into the history and production of sake. The area itself exuded a traditional atmosphere, with white-walled brewery buildings lining the streets.

Upon entering the museum, we were greeted by exhibits showcasing the tools and techniques used in sake brewing over the centuries. Ethan, surprisingly, was quite engaged, especially when he saw the old machinery and learned about the different types of rice used in the process. For Olivia and me, the highlight was the sake tasting at the end of the tour. We sampled a variety of Gekkeikan's finest sakes, each with its unique flavor profile.

I found myself particularly drawn to the retro Showa-era materials, including nostalgic advertisement posters and products from that time. It was like stepping back into a different era, and it gave me a deeper appreciation for the history of Gekkeikan. The courtyard, with its large sake vat, was also a sight to behold, imagining the generations of craftsmen who had spent their days there.

Before heading to Nara, we grabbed a quick and satisfying lunch at Saishuan Shiraki. It was a charming spot, and the food was delicious. It was a great way to recharge before our next adventure.

Journey to Nara and Encounters with Deer

After lunch, we hopped on a train to Nara, eager to experience its famous deer park. Nara is a city steeped in history, having served as Japan's capital in the 8th century. Today, it's best known for Nara Park, where over a thousand wild deer roam freely, considered messengers of the gods. As we stepped out of the train station, we were immediately greeted by the sight of deer wandering the streets. Ethan was ecstatic, and Olivia and I couldn't help but smile at his excitement.

Nara Park is more than just a place to see deer; it's a sprawling green space that encompasses several temples and shrines. We purchased some deer crackers from a vendor and ventured into the park, ready for our close encounters. The deer were surprisingly gentle, bowing their heads in anticipation of a treat. Ethan quickly learned the art of bowing back, earning him extra attention from the friendly creatures.

We spent hours wandering through the park, feeding the deer and exploring the various temples. Todai-ji Temple, home to a giant bronze Buddha statue, was particularly impressive. The sheer scale of the statue was awe-inspiring, and Ethan was fascinated by the intricate details. We also visited Kofuku-ji Temple, admiring its five-story pagoda reflected in Sarusawa Pond.

As the day drew to a close, we made a stop at Takashimaya Kyoto S.C. for some shopping. It's a large department store with a wide variety of goods, from fashion to food. It was a great place to pick up some souvenirs and gifts for friends and family back home. I found a fantastic Japanese phrasebook, finally replacing the one I’d forgotten at home! Olivia found some lovely ceramics, and Ethan was thrilled with a new toy he picked out. It was the perfect way to end our day before heading back to the hotel.

For dinner, we decided to treat ourselves to a special meal at THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO Restaurant. The restaurant offered a vegan set menu, which was a delightful surprise. The food was excellent, and the service was impeccable. It was the perfect way to end a long day of exploring.

Tomorrow, we're planning to visit Tōji Temple, Daitoku-ji Temple, and Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. It's going to be a packed day, but I'm excited to see what these new locations have to offer. We're also planning to stop by Kyoto Star Bar for a nightcap. It's our last night in Kyoto, so we want to make the most of it.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm struck by the incredible diversity of experiences that Kyoto and Nara have to offer. From the quiet serenity of temples to the lively charm of deer parks, there's something for everyone to enjoy. I'm grateful for the opportunity to share these moments with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime. As we prepare to leave Kyoto tomorrow, I know that we'll carry these experiences with us, inspiring future adventures and a deeper appreciation for the beauty and culture of Japan.
