A Final Day in Paradise

As our Amalfi Coast adventure draws to a close, I wanted to soak up every last bit of this stunning locale. Today was a mix of myth, history, and a little bit of retail therapy, perfectly encapsulating the charm of Amalfi. It’s hard to believe our ten days here are already up; it feels like just yesterday we were navigating the hairpin turns from Naples!


Our final day began, as many others did, with a delightful breakfast at Bar Savoia. The aroma of fresh pastries and strong Italian coffee was the perfect way to kickstart the day. Lena and I shared a couple of cappuccinos and some sfogliatella – those shell-shaped pastries filled with ricotta, candied citrus, and a hint of vanilla. A true taste of Naples that I've come to adore. Sophie, of course, opted for her usual chocolate croissant, which she devoured with impressive speed. Fuelled up, we were ready to explore!


First on the agenda was a visit to the Grotta delle Sirene, or the Siren's Grotto. This sounded like something straight out of a storybook, and I was eager to see what it held. The grotto is a captivating sea cave along the Amalfi Coast, steeped in myth and surrounded by stunning natural beauty. The boat ride to the grotto was an experience in itself, offering breathtaking views of the coastline. The water was crystal clear, and the dramatic cliffs provided a stunning backdrop. As we approached the cave, I could almost imagine the mythical sirens luring sailors with their enchanting songs. While I didn’t spot any actual sirens, the beauty of the grotto was mesmerizing enough. The sunlight filtering through the entrance created an ethereal glow, illuminating the turquoise waters within. It was a truly magical place, and I couldn't resist snapping a few photos to capture the moment. I'm no sailor, but I felt lured in for sure!

After our mythical encounter, we headed to the Piazza Flavio Gioia to see the Statue Dedicated to Flavio Gioia. I had read that Flavio Gioia was an important figure credited with inventing the magnetic compass. The statue stands proudly in the bustling piazza, surrounded by quaint shops and cafes. It was fascinating to learn about Gioia's contribution to maritime history and to imagine how his invention revolutionized navigation. Sophie, predictably, was more interested in the fountain at the square. I let her toss a coin in, making a wish – probably for more gelato!

Lena, ever the fashion enthusiast, had been wanting to visit Vincelli Silk, a local shop known for its high-quality silk products. So, after the statue, we made our way there. The shop was a treasure trove of beautiful scarves, ties, and other silk accessories. Lena was in her element, carefully examining each piece and admiring the intricate designs. She ended up buying a stunning silk scarf with a vibrant wave pattern. Sophie picked out a small, colorful silk hair tie, and I even found a stylish silk pocket square for myself. I figured it would add a touch of Amalfi Coast flair to my Heidelberg wardrobe. It was nice to pick up something special to remember the trip by, and I know Lena will treasure her scarf for years to come.

For our final lunch in Amalfi, we chose Tarì Art Restaurant. It was a fantastic choice! The restaurant is known for its modern take on traditional seafood dishes, and everything we ordered was delicious. I started with the seafood risotto, which was cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. Lena opted for the grilled octopus, which was tender and smoky. Sophie, surprisingly, decided to try the seafood pasta and declared it her favorite meal of the trip. The chef, Valentino Lucibello, clearly knows his way around seafood. The restaurant itself had a lovely ambiance, with artistic touches and a relaxed atmosphere. The owner, Bartlomiej Pazderski, is a passionate wine aficionado, and he helped us choose a wonderful local wine to pair with our meal. It was the perfect way to savor our last moments in Amalfi.

As the day wound down, we decided to have our last dinner at Ristorante La piazzetta, a charming Italian restaurant. We sat outside, soaking in the atmosphere of Amalfi's historic architecture and vibrant streets. I ordered the seafood pasta, while Lena opted for the fresh fish of the day. Sophie, of course, went for her favorite – spaghetti with tomato sauce. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. It was the perfect way to end our culinary journey through the Amalfi Coast.

After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll along the harbor, enjoying the cool evening breeze and the twinkling lights reflecting on the water. We stopped for one last gelato – pistachio for me, hazelnut for Lena, and chocolate for Sophie. As we savored our gelato, we reminisced about our favorite moments from the trip – the stunning views from Ravello, the exhilarating boat ride to Capri, and the delicious meals we had shared together. It was a trip filled with laughter, adventure, and unforgettable memories.


I’m sitting here now, writing this from our hotel room at Luna Convento, with the gentle sound of the waves lulling me into a state of reflection. It’s hard to believe this incredible journey is coming to an end. Tomorrow, we’ll be packing our bags and preparing for the drive back to Naples, and then the flight back to Germany. While I’m looking forward to returning to Heidelberg and seeing our home, I know I’ll miss the beauty and charm of the Amalfi Coast. This trip has been a reminder of the importance of taking time to explore the world and create lasting memories with loved ones. And who knows, maybe one day we’ll return to this enchanting corner of Italy. Until then, I’ll cherish the memories and the silk pocket square that will forever remind me of our Amalfi Coast adventure.
