A Daydream in Ravello

Today was a day for fairytales. Leaving the bustle of Amalfi behind, we ventured up to Ravello, a charming town perched high above the Amalfi Coast. I was ready to explore its famed gardens and soak in the kind of views that postcards struggle to capture. It felt like stepping into another world, a place where time slows down and beauty reigns supreme. I’m so glad I remembered to pack my camera this time, as I'm determined to capture every moment.

Our day began, as most good days do, with breakfast. We headed to Amalfi Terminal. I opted for the 'Piatto Completo' – the full breakfast. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. The spread included toast, crispy bacon, beans, sausage, and grilled tomato. The 'Piatto Completo' at Amalfi Terminal was exactly what I needed to set me up for the day ahead.

Villa Rufolo: A Glimpse into History

After breakfast, we hopped on a bus to Ravello, eager to explore Villa Rufolo. The drive itself was an experience, winding along the narrow roads with breathtaking views of the coastline. Upon arrival in Ravello, the villa was only a short walk from the main square, Piazza Vescovado.

Villa Rufolo is like something out of a dream. Built in the 13th century by the wealthy Rufolo family, it has a rich history, having hosted kings and even inspired Wagner's opera, Parsifal. As I wandered through the gardens, I could see why. The vibrant flowers, ancient towers, and panoramic views created an atmosphere of pure magic. The villa has been called 'a small Alhambra', and I could see the resemblance in its Moorish architecture and stunning gardens.

The Villa Rufolo is not just a feast for the eyes; it's a journey through time. As I strolled through the gardens, I imagined the lavish banquets hosted by the Rufolo family for King Robert II of Naples and other Norman royalty. I learned that the villa was once one of the largest and most expensive on the Amalfi Coast, with legends of hidden treasures circulating throughout the region. It was fascinating to discover that the Rufolo family's history in Ravello dates back to the 11th century and that they held several properties in the municipality. One member, Giovanni Rufolo, even became the bishop of the town in 1150, further elevating the family's social standing.

I explored the Torre-Museo, an interactive museum within the Main Tower, which offered insights into the villa's history and the people who shaped it. It was fascinating to learn about Sir Francis Neville Reid, the Scottish botanist who purchased the villa in 1851 and renovated the rooms and gardens, giving it the appearance we see today. Climbing the winding stairs of the tower, I reached a viewing platform that provided breathtaking views of the villa and the Amalfi Coast. It was a moment of pure awe as I took in the beauty that surrounded me.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

Giardino della Pellerina: A Hidden Gem

Next on our list was the Giardino della Pellerina. Tucked away, this garden offered a more intimate and tranquil experience. While perhaps not as grand as Villa Rufolo, its charm lay in its peaceful atmosphere and beautiful landscaping. I enjoyed wandering through the winding paths, discovering hidden corners and enjoying the scent of blooming flowers.

Giardino della Pellerina provided a welcome escape from the crowds. I found a quiet bench overlooking the valley and spent some time simply soaking in the serenity. It's amazing how restorative a few moments in nature can be. The garden's thoughtful design created a sense of harmony and balance, making it the perfect place to reflect and recharge.

I learned that the history of the garden can be divided into three distinct phases: the original phase dating back to the 13th century when the Villa was built, the medieval phase with traces of the garden described by Boccaccio in the Decamerone, and the Romantic phase with Francis Nevile Reid. Reid's efforts marked the renaissance of the gardens in Villa Rufolo, and in May 1880, Wagner visited Ravello and discovered the enchanted garden of Klingsor as he had imagined it for his opera Parsifal.

A Little Shopping and a Delicious Lunch

Before lunch, Lena wanted to do a little shopping. We stumbled upon Ricky's Shop, a charming little store filled with local crafts and souvenirs. It was the perfect place to pick up a few mementos of our trip. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-painted ceramic plate, a reminder of the vibrant colors of the Amalfi Coast. I'm sure Sophie will appreciate the little toy car I picked up for her. It will give her something to play with while Lena and I enjoy a quiet evening in Heidelberg.

For lunch, we decided on Terrazza 17. The restaurant is located on the top floor of Hotel Marina Riviera, and the view was simply stunning. I opted for one of the pasta dishes, while Lena went for a seafood option. The food was delicious, and the service was impeccable. It was the perfect spot for a leisurely lunch, savoring the flavors of Italy while enjoying the breathtaking scenery. Terrazza 17 is known for its authentic Amalfi culinary tradition, with a menu that varies daily depending on the season and availability of products. The restaurant also boasts an impressive wine selection, featuring the best national and international labels, including local Campania productions.

Dinner at La Taverna del Duca

As evening approached, we made our way back to Amalfi, ready for dinner. Based on a recommendation from a local, we chose La Taverna del Duca. This restaurant is known for its traditional Amalfi cuisine and cozy atmosphere. I started with the spaghetti a limone, a local specialty, followed by a fresh fish dish. The flavors were incredible, and the portions were generous. Lena enjoyed the catch of the day, and the house wine complemented our meal perfectly.

The staff at La Taverna del Duca were incredibly friendly and welcoming, making us feel right at home. The restaurant's ambiance was warm and inviting, with a mix of locals and tourists creating a lively atmosphere. I learned that La Taverna del Duca is famous for its great service and friendly staff, who are always ready to help. Many visitors praise the fair prices and the peaceful atmosphere, making it a must-visit for anyone looking to experience authentic Amalfi cuisine.

Looking Ahead

As I sit here writing this, back at the Luna Convento, I can't help but smile. Today was a day filled with beauty, history, and delicious food. Ravello is truly a special place, and I'm so glad I had the chance to explore its hidden corners. Tomorrow, we're planning to explore Belvedere Di Paipo and Tre Calli Mountain. I'm looking forward to more breathtaking views and perhaps a bit of a hike. And of course, we'll be sure to find another great restaurant for dinner – maybe Trattoria San Giuseppe. Until then, buona notte from the Amalfi Coast!

Before drifting off to sleep, I made a mental note to pick up a portable phone charger when I get back to Heidelberg. It's a small thing, but it would make a big difference on days like today when I'm constantly snapping photos and using my phone for navigation. It's the little things that can make or break a trip, and I'm determined to be as prepared as possible for the adventures that lie ahead.

The Ravello Festival is a highlight of the summer, and it sounds like something Lena and I would enjoy. The festival features music and arts, including jazz, art shows, dance, photography, and classical concerts. The main venue is the open-air stage at the cliffside Villa Rufolo, where concerts start around 4 am and play to the sunrise, creating a unique and unforgettable experience. Perhaps we can plan a trip back here in the summer to experience the Ravello Festival.

I am also thinking about Sophie. I am missing her a lot and I hope she is doing well with Lena's parents. I´ll bring her a special gift from the Amalfi Coast so she can remember our trip to Italy.
