Family Adventure in Serra de São Mamede Natural Park
Day 7: Echoes of the Past: Exploring Caves and Synagogues in Serra de São Mamede
Discover the wonders of Serra de São Mamede as we explore ancient caves, a medieval synagogue, and savor local flavors on our final day.
Journey's End, but the Adventure Lives On
Today marked the final day of our family adventure in Serra de São Mamede Natural Park, and what a journey it has been! From the moment we arrived, the park has captivated us with its stunning landscapes and rich history. Today, we set out to explore the depths of ancient caves and the echoes of a medieval synagogue, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
Our first stop was the Mira de Aire Cave. I'll admit, I'm not usually one for enclosed spaces, but Lena and Sophie were so excited that I couldn't resist. Plus, I figured it would be a good opportunity to test out my photography skills in a unique environment. After a short wait, we joined a guided tour that took us deep beneath the surface. The scale of the cave was truly impressive. Stalactites and stalagmites adorned the cavern, creating an otherworldly landscape. Sophie was wide-eyed, pointing out every interesting formation, while Lena was busy snapping photos. The guide shared fascinating insights about the cave's history and geology, making the experience both educational and awe-inspiring. Descending 110 meters was quite the experience, and I was grateful for the elevators that whisked us back to the surface.

Sometimes, the most profound discoveries are found in the quietest of places.
After emerging from the depths of Mira de Aire, we drove towards Castelo de Vide. The drive itself was a treat, with rolling hills and picturesque villages dotting the landscape. We were headed to the Sinagoga de Castelo de Vide, a medieval synagogue that now serves as a museum. As someone who appreciates history and culture, I was particularly looking forward to this visit. The synagogue dates back to the 14th century, a time when Castelo de Vide had a thriving Jewish community. Stepping inside, I felt a sense of reverence. The building is small but beautifully preserved, with ogival stone arches and a mezuzah mark on one of the doors. We explored the two-story structure, imagining the lives of those who once gathered here to worship. The museum houses a collection of artifacts that tell the story of the Jewish community in Castelo de Vide, offering a glimpse into their traditions and struggles. It was a poignant reminder of the diverse cultures that have shaped Portugal's history.

Before our historical exploration, we started our day with breakfast at Olha a Tosta. This cozy spot was a perfect way to fuel up for the day, serving up delicious toasts and coffee that hit the spot. I enjoyed a hearty *tosta mista*, while Lena opted for a lighter pastry. Sophie, of course, went straight for the *nata*, her favorite Portuguese treat.

For lunch, we found ourselves at Cabanas. The restaurant offered a charming atmosphere and traditional Portuguese cuisine. We indulged in some local specialties, savoring the flavors of the region. Sophie was particularly fond of the grilled fish, while Lena and I enjoyed a hearty stew. It was the perfect midday break before our afternoon adventures.

In the late afternoon, we stopped by Casa da Boa Memória, a local shop known for its exquisite Portuguese handicrafts. Lena and Sophie were immediately drawn to the colorful ceramics and intricately woven textiles. I browsed the selection of local wines and olive oils, eventually settling on a bottle of red wine from the region. We chatted with the shop owner, who shared stories about the local artisans and their craft. It was fascinating to learn about the history and traditions behind these beautiful handmade items.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Cova Funda for our final dinner in Serra de São Mamede Natural Park. The restaurant was recommended to us by a local, and it did not disappoint. The ambiance was warm and inviting, and the menu featured a variety of traditional Portuguese dishes. We started with a selection of local cheeses and cured meats, followed by a hearty stew. The flavors were rich and complex, reflecting the region's culinary heritage. It was the perfect way to end our trip, savoring the last moments of our adventure in this beautiful corner of Portugal.
