Discover Huaraz: Breathtaking views from Mirador de Rataquenua, local flavors at Don Cuy, and unique souvenirs at Gatos.
A Day of Discoveries in Huaraz
Today was all about soaking in the beauty of Huaraz from above and savoring the local culture through its food and crafts. It's amazing how much a single day can offer when you're open to exploring.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Kaypacha Restaurante. I opted for a traditional Peruvian breakfast, which included tamales and a strong coffee – just the fuel I needed for the morning’s adventure. Kaypacha's commitment to using local ingredients was evident in every bite, a great start to the day.
Fueled up and ready to go, I set off towards Mirador de Rataquenua. The mirador is located about 7 km southeast of Huaraz. The climb was a bit strenuous, especially with the altitude, but the views along the way were worth every step. Eucalyptus trees lined parts of the path, filling the air with their refreshing scent. As I ascended, I could see Huaraz shrinking below, nestled in the valley with the Cordillera Blanca looming in the distance.
Reaching the Mirador de Rataquenua was breathtaking. The panoramic view of Huaraz was stunning, with the city sprawling out beneath me and the snow-capped peaks of the Cordillera Blanca providing a majestic backdrop. I spent a good hour just taking it all in, snapping photos, and enjoying the crisp mountain air. There's also a large cross at the mirador, which seems to be a popular spot for religious pilgrimages. The Mirador offers a strategic vantage point to view the city.

Sometimes, the best views come after the hardest climbs.
After descending from the mirador, my stomach started to rumble, signaling lunchtime. I headed to Don Cuy, a restaurant known for its traditional Peruvian cuisine. I decided to be adventurous and try the cuy, or guinea pig, a local delicacy. It was served whole, and while the presentation was a bit daunting, the taste was surprisingly good – crispy skin and tender meat. I also had a chance to try some traditional Peruvian drinks, which were refreshing and unique. Don Cuy indeed offers a cozy environment in the city of Huaraz.

With a full belly, I decided to explore the local shops in Huaraz. My destination was Gatos, a store specializing in adventure clothing and souvenirs. I was on the hunt for a unique memento of my trip and perhaps a new hat. Gatos had a wide selection of locally crafted jewelry and accessories, each telling a story of the region's culture and spirit. I ended up buying a beautiful, hand-woven scarf made from alpaca wool, perfect for the cooler evenings in Heidelberg. The store had a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the staff was incredibly helpful, offering insights into the best products for my needs.

Before dinner, I made a detour to Han's Spot. It's a bit outside the main part of Huaraz, but I'd heard it offered some great views and a chance to see more of the surrounding landscape. The walk there was pleasant, taking me through some of the quieter streets of Huaraz and past fields with grazing animals. Han's Spot itself was a tranquil area, perfect for a peaceful stroll and some contemplation.

For my final meal of the day, I chose El Aji Seco. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the menu was full of traditional Peruvian dishes with a modern twist. I opted for aji de gallina, a creamy chicken stew that was both comforting and flavorful. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring the culinary delights of Huaraz. El Aji Seco is known for its innovative approach to Peruvian cuisine, while still honoring the traditions.

Tomorrow marks the final day of my solo adventure in the Huaraz Region. I plan to visit Plazuela de Belén and Plazuela de la Soledad, soaking in the last bits of Huaraz's charm before heading back to Lima. I'm also looking forward to trying the Novoandina cocktails at Kuya Kuya Coctelería Profesional Novoandina - Huaraz, a perfect way to celebrate the end of a fantastic trip. And of course, I'll be sure to grab one last Peruvian meal at Taita before my departure.

It's been a while since Lena and Sophie were able to travel with me, but I'm already looking forward to planning our next family adventure. Maybe we'll explore some of the castles along the Neckar River when I get back to Heidelberg. For now, though, I'm grateful for this time to explore my own interests and recharge my batteries.
I'm also reminded that I forgot my portable charger, which made keeping my camera and phone alive a bit challenging today. It's a good reminder to double-check my packing list next time!
