Stepping Back in Time and Savouring Local Flavours

Today was a delightful blend of history, culture, and culinary exploration. It's amazing how much character and charm you can find tucked away in the small corners of this beautiful park. Klaus and I set out with a simple plan, but as always, Gros Morne had a few surprises in store for us.

Our first stop was Under the Stump in Rocky Harbour, and it was an experience that truly immersed us in the local traditions and Indigenous culture. The tour guides, Perry and Trina, along with their children, have created something really special here. As we ventured into the back country on an ATV, Trina shared stories about the local flora and Newfoundland life, making it both educational and incredibly engaging. Klaus was particularly fascinated by the insights into Mi'kmaq storytelling, where land and legend intertwine.

Next on our itinerary was Jenniex House, a municipal heritage building in Norris Point. The house, originally built in 1926, was moved across the ice from Neddy Point in 1938, a testament to the resourcefulness of the early settlers. Now operating as a heritage museum, it offered a mesmerizing view of the Tablelands, especially as dusk began to settle. The interior was thoughtfully arranged with period artifacts, giving us a glimpse into the life of a Newfoundland family in the early 20th century. Klaus, with his architect's eye, appreciated the simple, rectangular form and the low-hipped roof of the house.

After immersing ourselves in history, our stomachs started to rumble, leading us to a culinary adventure. We had heard great things about Taste, a restaurant committed to sustainably sourced, locally grown food. And it certainly lived up to its reputation. From Ocean Wise certified seafood to Atlantic Canadian meats, the menu reflected the bounty of the sea and land. We decided to share a smoked scallop salad and the slow roasted lamb – each dish was a testament to the chef's expertise and the quality of local ingredients. The cozy ambiance and attentive service made it a perfect dining experience.

As the day continued, we couldn't resist stopping by Sunset Cafe in Rocky Harbour. The cafe had a warm, inviting atmosphere, and the aroma of freshly brewed Jumping Bean coffee filled the air. I opted for a latte, while Klaus enjoyed a hearty breakfast wrap. We also couldn't resist browsing the gift shop, picking up a few cute souvenirs to remind us of our time here.

For dinner, we decided to try the Ocean View Hotel, known for its panoramic views of the Rocky Harbour waterfront. The Oceans Room, located on the second floor, provided stunning views, and we were lucky enough to catch the sunset as we dined. We started with some handcrafted cocktails, followed by fresh seafood sourced from local suppliers. The combination of great food, live music, and the beautiful view made it a memorable evening.

Before heading back to our cabin, we made a final stop at the Newfoundland Emporium. As an antique and souvenir shop, it was filled with Newfoundland-made items, from jams and candies to records and books. I was on the hunt for some local literature, while Klaus was intrigued by the antiques. We ended up buying a few rare books and a jar of partridgeberry jam – perfect to bring a little taste of Newfoundland back to Heidelberg.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Gros Morne has to offer. From exploring the rugged landscapes to immersing ourselves in the local culture and savoring the delicious food, every moment was a treasure. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Gros Morne Wildlife Museum and Steady Brook Falls, and perhaps enjoy a nightcap at Bonne Bay Inn. I'm excited to see what other hidden gems we'll discover in this beautiful corner of the world. It's experiences like these that remind me why Klaus and I decided to embark on this journey in the first place – to connect with nature, immerse ourselves in local culture, and create lasting memories together. And as the saying goes, Man muss die Feste feiern, wie sie fallen – you have to celebrate the festivals as they come!

I must admit, I did forget to pack a portable phone charger and a first aid kit, which are now definitely on my list of essentials for future trips. It's always the little things that can make a big difference, isn't it?

As we settled into our cozy cabin, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences we had today. Gros Morne has a way of captivating your heart and leaving you with a sense of wonder. And as we prepare for another day of exploration, I'm reminded of a German saying that perfectly captures the essence of our journey: Reisen bildet – traveling educates. Indeed, every day here is a lesson in nature, culture, and the simple joys of life.
