Exploring the Natural Wonders of Gros Morne National Park
Day 9: A Day of Discovery: Wildlife, Waterfalls, and Culinary Delights in Gros Morne
Exploring Gros Morne's diverse attractions: from wildlife encounters at the museum to the serene beauty of Steady Brook Falls.
Friday's Adventures in Gros Morne
Today was a delightful blend of nature, wildlife, and culinary exploration here in Gros Morne National Park. Klaus and I set out with a sense of adventure, eager to uncover more of what this stunning region has to offer. It's days like these that remind me why we cherish our travel experiences so much – the unexpected discoveries, the immersion in local culture, and the sheer beauty of the natural world.
Our first stop was the Gros Morne Wildlife Museum. I was intrigued to see Newfoundland's wildlife up close, especially since the colder weather makes spotting animals in the wild a bit more challenging. The museum was a treasure trove of information and exhibits.

The museum houses over 100 full-size animals in realistic scenes. From moose and caribou to puffins and foxes, it was fascinating to see these creatures in such detail. The museum scenes cover Newfoundland's major habitats, from mountaintops to the ocean floor. It really felt like stepping into a piece of Newfoundland wilderness, and the attention to detail was remarkable. Klaus, with his architectural eye, was particularly impressed by the craftsmanship of the displays.
After immersing ourselves in the wildlife of the region, we decided to stretch our legs and visit Steady Brook Falls. The drive itself was scenic, with forested hills alternating with colossal exposed layers of rock. As we approached Steady Brook, the anticipation of seeing the falls grew.

The Steady Brook Falls Trail is a hidden gem. The trail meandered through lush vegetation, and the sound of rushing water created a soothing backdrop. The falls themselves were breathtaking, cascading down the rocks with such force and beauty. I was so glad we brought our camera because the scene was picture-perfect. The forested hills and exposed rock layers added to the dramatic landscape.
Sometimes, the most memorable moments are the ones that combine the thrill of discovery with the simple pleasure of experiencing nature's beauty.
By this point, our stomachs were starting to rumble, so we turned our attention to the culinary delights of Gros Morne. We had a tough decision to make, with several enticing options on our list. First up was The Old Store Cafe in Norris Point. The cafe has a fresh, quirky, and eclectic feel, with local art adorning the walls. The menu is simple and changes regularly, always offering something satisfying and fresh. I opted for one of their grilled paninis, while Klaus decided to try the pea soup, which, according to the locals, is as thick as fog – a definite compliment. The coffee bar was impressive, and we enjoyed lattes served in handcrafted pottery mugs. Before leaving, we couldn't resist trying the “Gull Sh** Muffin,” a delightful combination of vanilla and chocolate.

Next, we ventured to Seaside Restaurant in Trout River, known for specializing in sunsets and seafood. Though it was too early for sunset, the promise of fresh seafood was enough to draw us in. The restaurant is family-owned and has a nautical theme. We indulged in some of the freshest seafood from the cold waters of Newfoundland & Labrador. I savored some mussels, while Klaus enjoyed the legendary cod. The richness of Newfoundland's maritime flavors was evident in every bite. It was easy to see why this place has earned a Hall of Fame Restaurant award.

Finally, we made our way to The Black Spruce Restaurant in Norris Point. Nestled in the heart of Gros Morne National Park, this restaurant offers a refined dining experience inspired by the flavors of Newfoundland. The Black Spruce works closely with local producers to create a seasonal menu. The setting was intimate, and the views of Bonne Bay were stunning. For dinner bookings between 5:00 and 6:30 PM, it's worth noting that the table may be reserved again for a later seating. We savored dishes made from scratch with local ingredients. The chef's dedication to using local, sustainably harvested food was evident.

To cap off our evening, we decided to check out Bonne Bay Inn. It was the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring. The inn overlooks Bonne Bay and is surrounded by scenic mountain views. We enjoyed a drink at Elements Pub, the inn's cozy bar. The atmosphere was relaxing, and they played an array of genres, including past visitors to the Writers at Woody Point Festival. It was the perfect way to reflect on our day.

As I write this, Klaus is already looking at the itinerary for tomorrow. We're planning to visit the Tablelands and Woody Point Lighthouse. I'm particularly excited about the Tablelands, as I've heard so much about their unique geological features. We're also planning to stop by Coyley's General Store.
Gros Morne continues to surprise and delight us at every turn. I am excited for another day of exploration in this beautiful corner of the world.
Good night from Gros Morne,
