Summiting Gros Morne and Stepping Back in Time

Today was a day of contrasts, a beautiful blend of physical challenge and historical immersion here in Gros Morne National Park. Klaus and I set out with the eagerness of seasoned travellers, ready to embrace both the heights of Gros Morne Mountain and the depths of Broom Point's past. The weather forecast threatened showers, but we packed our layers, channeling the spirit of 'Es gibt kein schlechtes Wetter, nur schlechte Kleidung' – there's no bad weather, only bad clothing, as they say in Germany.

Our morning began with an ambitious undertaking: the Gros Morne Mountain Hiking Trail. This 17-kilometer loop is known for its challenging terrain and rewarding panoramic views. The trail began innocently enough, a gentle ascent through a dense forest. As we climbed, the trees thinned, revealing the stark beauty of the mountain. The wind picked up, a reminder of the approaching winter, but the views were worth every gust.

The final ascent was a scramble over rocky terrain, requiring both hands and feet. Klaus, ever the supportive husband, offered a steadying hand as I navigated the more precarious sections. Reaching the summit, we were greeted by a breathtaking vista of the park's fjords and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Despite the cloudy skies, the landscape was stunning.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

After descending Gros Morne Mountain, our legs weary but spirits high, we drove towards Broom Point. This historic fishing site offered a glimpse into the lives of the Mudge family, who fished here from 1941 to 1975. The restored cabin and fish store provided a tangible connection to the past, a reminder of the hard work and resilience of Newfoundland's fishing families.

Exploring Broom Point, we learned about the traditional methods of cod, lobster, and salmon fishing. The interpreters shared stories of the Mudge brothers and their families, painting a vivid picture of their seasonal life on the coast. It was fascinating to imagine their daily routines, the women and children 'making fish' while the men braved the unpredictable waters.

Before heading back, we stopped by Island Treasures, a local shop known for its unique Newfoundland products. I picked up a few locally crafted gifts, mementos of our time in Gros Morne.

For dinner, we had planned to try one of the local restaurants. We had a tough time deciding between The Old Store Cafe, Sunset Cafe and The Old Loft Restaurant. Sunset Cafe sounded very appealing, but we ended up at The Old Store Cafe in Norris Point, enticed by the promise of hearty, homemade meals and a quirky, eclectic atmosphere. The cafe was indeed charming, adorned with local art and pops of vibrant color. I opted for a grilled panini, while Klaus chose one of the hot dishes. We ended the meal with their Americano over ice with a home-baked treat.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Discovery Centre and hike the Tablelands Trail. I am looking forward to learning more about the geology of this unique landscape. Perhaps we'll even treat ourselves to a glass of wine at the Merchant Warehouse Retro Cafe & Wine Bar to celebrate another day of exploration.

While driving back to our cabin, we discussed the stark contrast between the physical demands of the Gros Morne Mountain hike and the serene historical immersion at Broom Point. Both experiences offered unique perspectives on the park, highlighting its natural beauty and cultural heritage. It was a day of heights and history, a perfect reflection of Gros Morne's diverse offerings.

As the sun set, casting a golden glow over the park, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore this remarkable corner of the world. Gros Morne has a way of captivating the soul, leaving a lasting impression long after you've left its trails and shores. And as we settled into our cozy cabin for the night, I knew that tomorrow would bring new adventures and discoveries, further deepening our connection to this extraordinary place.
