A Day of Discovery in Woody Point

Today, Klaus and I set out to explore the southern reaches of Bonne Bay, a day filled with quaint coastal charm and fascinating marine insights. As we continue our journey through Gros Morne National Park, each day reveals a new facet of this incredible landscape, and today was no exception. I was particularly excited to see the Woody Point Lighthouse and learn more about the marine life in the area.

Our first stop was the Bonne Bay Marine Station in Norris Point. The drive itself was stunning, with the crisp November air and the rugged coastline providing a picturesque backdrop. Despite the chill in the air, the sun shone brightly, casting a warm glow on the landscape. It reminded me of our drives back in New Zealand, where the sea is always a constant companion.

The Bonne Bay Marine Station turned out to be a delightful surprise. From the outside, it appeared modest, but inside, it was a treasure trove of marine knowledge. We decided to take a guided tour, and I'm so glad we did. The young marine biology student who led us was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the local marine ecosystem.

We learned about the diverse habitats within Bonne Bay, from the icy fjord basins to the open Gulf of St. Lawrence. I was fascinated to discover the resident populations of offshore animals and Arctic species that thrive here. The interactive aquariums and touch tanks were a hit, allowing us to get up close and personal with sea stars, lobsters, and even flounders. Klaus, ever the architect, was particularly interested in the station's research facilities and the ongoing projects focused on the social and natural sciences.

The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.

After immersing ourselves in the marine world, we drove towards Woody Point, eager to see the iconic lighthouse. Woody Point itself is a charming town, with a rich history as a former center of commerce for the Northwest coast. As we approached the lighthouse, I couldn't help but feel a sense of nostalgia, reminiscent of the lighthouses that dot the New Zealand coastline.

The Woody Point Lighthouse stands proudly on a grassy knoll, overlooking the south arm of Bonne Bay. It's a simple yet elegant structure, a square, tapered wooden tower with a classic square wooden lantern. We learned that the current lighthouse was built in 1959, replacing the original one from 1919. It has served as a navigational aid for the local community for decades.

Klaus and I strolled around the lighthouse, taking in the panoramic views of Bonne Bay. The crisp air, the sound of the waves, and the sight of the rugged coastline created a sense of tranquility that washed over us. It was the perfect spot to reflect on our journey so far and appreciate the natural beauty of Gros Morne National Park.

Before leaving Woody Point, we decided to explore the town a bit. We stumbled upon the Treasure Box, a delightful shop that combined local crafts with a cozy coffee shop. It reminded me of the small artisan shops we often visit in Heidelberg. We browsed the handmade goods, admiring the intricate craftsmanship and the unique stories behind each piece. I picked up a small, hand-painted ornament as a memento of our visit.

For lunch, we had several enticing options in Woody Point. Neddies Harbour Inn and Buoy & Arrow Restaurant and Suites both sounded wonderful, but we ultimately decided on The Cat Stop. I was intrigued by the name and the promise of a cozy atmosphere. The Cat Stop turned out to be a great choice, with a warm and inviting ambiance and a menu filled with local specialties. I opted for the seafood chowder, a hearty and flavorful dish that warmed me from the inside out. Klaus, ever the adventurous eater, tried the pan-fried cod, a Newfoundland classic.

As the day drew to a close, we reflected on our experiences in Woody Point. From the fascinating marine life at the Bonne Bay Marine Station to the iconic Woody Point Lighthouse and the charming local shops, it was a day filled with discovery and delight. It reminded me of why we love to travel – the opportunity to immerse ourselves in new cultures, learn about different ecosystems, and connect with the local communities.

Tomorrow, we're planning to hike the Lookout Hills Trail and visit Shallow Bay Beach. I'm particularly excited about the hike, as I've heard the views from the top are simply breathtaking. And of course, we'll be sure to find a cozy spot for dinner, perhaps The Old Loft Restaurant or Fisherman's Landing Restaurant. Gros Morne continues to surprise and enchant us at every turn.

As I write this, Klaus is already fast asleep, dreaming of architectural wonders and perhaps a glimpse of the elusive arctic species we learned about today. I, on the other hand, am still buzzing with excitement, eager to see what tomorrow brings. Gros Morne National Park, you have truly captured our hearts.

And as I always say: Travel is not just about seeing new places, but about seeing them with new eyes.
