Echoes of the Past, Tastes of the Present

Day 11 in Gros Morne was a journey through time and taste, a blend of ancient history and modern culinary delights. Klaus and I set out with a sense of excitement, eager to explore the historical sites and savor the local flavors that this region has to offer. It was a day filled with discoveries, both old and new, and a reminder of the rich tapestry of human history woven into the landscapes we were exploring.

The morning dawned crisp and clear, a typical late November day here in Newfoundland. After a hearty breakfast at our cozy cabin, we packed our essentials – camera, binoculars, and of course, our reusable water bottles – and set off for Port au Choix National Historic Site. The drive itself was scenic, with the rugged coastline on one side and the rolling hills on the other. As we approached the site, I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation, knowing that we were about to step back thousands of years into the past.

Port au Choix National Historic Site

Our first stop was the Port au Choix National Historic Site. This site is a treasure trove of archaeological remnants, showcasing over 6,000 years of human history. As we walked through the ancient burial grounds, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and reverence. It's incredible to think that people lived and thrived here so long ago, leaving behind traces of their lives for us to discover.

The interpretation center provided a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the Maritime Archaic people, the Dorset people, and the Groswater people who once called this place home. We learned about their tools, their hunting techniques, and their spiritual beliefs. Klaus, with his keen interest in history, was particularly captivated by the artifacts on display, from slate spears to harpoons.

We took a walk along the limestone barrens, marveling at the unique landscape and the rare arctic plants that grow here. The wind was strong, but the views were breathtaking. It was easy to imagine the ancient peoples who once roamed these shores, relying on the sea for their sustenance.
History is not just a collection of dates and facts; it's a story of human resilience, adaptation, and connection to the land.

Gros Morne Adventures

After immersing ourselves in history, we decided to inject a bit of modern-day adventure into our day. We headed over to Gros Morne Adventures, eager to experience the park from a different perspective. Although the colder weather might deter some, Klaus and I were undeterred, seeking a unique way to appreciate the park's beauty. While the sea kayaking tours were not running due to the season, we found that Gros Morne Adventures offered rentals and smaller, personalized tours that suited us perfectly.

We opted for a guided hiking tour that took us through some of the lesser-known trails in the park. Our guide, a local with a passion for the park's natural history, shared stories about the flora and fauna, as well as the geological wonders that make Gros Morne so unique. It was a refreshing change of pace from our earlier historical explorations, and it allowed us to appreciate the park's beauty in a more active way.

A Culinary Journey

As the day wore on, our appetites began to growl. We decided to embark on a culinary journey, sampling some of the local restaurants that Gros Morne has to offer. Our first stop was The Old Loft Restaurant in Woody Point. This charming eatery is known for its authentic Newfoundland food and its cozy atmosphere. We started with the seafood chowder, a creamy and flavorful concoction filled with generous chunks of fish and shellfish. For our main courses, Klaus opted for the pan-fried cod, while I chose the fisherman's platter, a delightful assortment of seafood delicacies. The food was hearty and delicious, and the service was warm and friendly. It felt like we were dining in someone's home, surrounded by local art and nautical-themed decor.

Next on our list was Java Jack's Restaurant & Gallery in Rocky Harbour. This place is a local institution, known for its fresh seafood, its organic garden, and its funky atmosphere. We arrived just in time for dinner, and the place was buzzing with activity. The aroma of freshly baked bread and simmering seafood filled the air, making our mouths water. We ordered the seafood bake and some locally brewed ale, and settled in to enjoy the lively ambiance. The walls were adorned with local art, and the staff were friendly and engaging. It was clear that this place was more than just a restaurant; it was a community gathering place.

For a late-night snack, we ventured to Anchor Pub, enticed by its reputation as Gros Morne's liveliest pub. Though the live entertainment, which runs through the summer, was not on offer given the late November date, the pub's cozy interior and selection of local beers were more than enough to provide a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere. Klaus enjoyed a Quidi Vidi specialty beer, while I opted for a glass of wine. We shared some pub-style delicacies and chatted with some of the locals, learning more about the history and culture of the area. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

A Hidden Gem and Tomorrow's Plans

Before heading back to our cabin, we made one last stop at Rudy's Gas Bar and Pub in Norris Point. This unassuming establishment, attached to a gas station, is a hidden gem known for its delicious pub-style food and its welcoming atmosphere. We had heard rave reviews about their seafood chowder and their perfectly crisp fries, so we decided to give it a try. We were not disappointed. The chowder was rich and creamy, and the fries were indeed perfectly crisp. It was the perfect late-night treat to cap off a day of culinary indulgence.

As we drove back to our cabin, the stars were twinkling in the night sky. We reflected on the day's adventures, from the ancient history of Port au Choix to the modern-day flavors of Gros Morne's local restaurants. It was a day that had nourished both our minds and our bodies, and we felt grateful for the opportunity to experience this unique part of the world.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Eastern Point Trail and visit the Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse. I am particularly excited about the lighthouse, as I have always been drawn to these iconic structures that stand as beacons of hope and guidance along the rugged coastlines. Plus, we are planning to stop at Valley Crafts and pick up some local souvenirs. I am hoping to find a piece of art that captures the essence of Gros Morne, something to remind us of our adventures here long after we have returned home. I’m also looking forward to trying out The Cat Stop for lunch.

As I settle in for the night, I am filled with a sense of contentment and anticipation. Gros Morne has a way of captivating the soul, of drawing you in with its natural beauty and its rich history. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Traveling with Klaus always adds an extra layer of joy to these adventures. His enthusiasm for history and his appreciation for good food make him the perfect travel companion. I am so grateful to share these experiences with him, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

And of course, I can't forget to mention the essentials that made this trip possible: our trusty hiking boots, our warm clothing, and our trusty camera. And while we did forget our portable phone charger and our first aid kit, we managed to navigate the day without any major mishaps. Perhaps we'll make a stop at a local shop tomorrow to pick up those forgotten items, just to be on the safe side. After all, it's always better to be prepared, especially when exploring the rugged landscapes of Gros Morne.
