A Walk on Another Planet

Today, Klaus and I embarked on a journey that felt like stepping onto another planet. We explored the otherworldly landscapes of the Tablelands in Gros Morne National Park and soaked in the charm of Woody Point. It was a day filled with geological wonders, scenic beauty, and the warmth of Newfoundland hospitality.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at our cozy cabin, fueling up for a day of exploration. The crisp November air nipped at our cheeks as we set out for the Tablelands. I made sure to pack extra layers, remembering the unpredictable Newfoundland weather. Even though I miss my portable phone charger and first aid kit from our essentials, I was determined to make the most of our adventure [cite: null].

The Tablelands: Where Earth Reveals Its Secrets

As we approached the Tablelands, the landscape transformed dramatically. Lush greenery gave way to a stark, rust-colored terrain that looked like something out of a science fiction film. The Tablelands are a unique geological formation, part of the Earth's mantle pushed to the surface millions of years ago when continents collided. The rock, called peridotite, is rich in magnesium and low in calcium, which explains the unusual coloration and barren landscape.

We decided to take the Tablelands Trail, a 4-kilometer path that skirts the base of the mountain. The trail is relatively gentle, making it accessible for hikers of all levels. As we walked, we marveled at the panoramic views and the strange, almost alien, plant life that has adapted to the harsh conditions. Klaus, ever the architect, was fascinated by the geological formations, pointing out different rock layers and explaining the forces that shaped this landscape.

The Tablelands are a reminder that the Earth is a dynamic, ever-changing planet, and that even the most solid ground beneath our feet has a history of upheaval and transformation.

I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe as we hiked. It was humbling to walk on a piece of the Earth's mantle, a part of our planet usually hidden deep beneath the crust. The sheer scale of the landscape and the knowledge of its ancient origins made me feel incredibly small yet connected to something vast and timeless.

Lunch with a View

After our hike, we were ready for a bite to eat. We drove to Woody Point, a charming town nestled on the shores of Bonne Bay. For lunch, we chose the Back Cove Café, drawn in by its cozy atmosphere and promising menu. The cafe was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to enjoy a delicious meal with a stunning view of the bay. While I couldn't find specific reviews for Back Cove Café, Woody Point is known for its culinary experiences.

I ordered a bowl of seafood chowder, a Newfoundland staple, while Klaus opted for a hearty sandwich. The chowder was creamy and flavorful, filled with generous chunks of cod, shrimp, and mussels. As we ate, we watched the fishing boats bobbing in the harbor and listened to the lively chatter around us. It was the perfect way to recharge after our hike and soak in the local atmosphere.

Alternatively, we could have tried Taste restaurant, known for its sustainably sourced, locally grown food. Or, for a more casual option, Fisherman's Landing Restaurant offers traditional Newfoundland meals in a cozy setting.

Woody Point Lighthouse: A Beacon of History

Our next stop was the Woody Point Lighthouse, a three-story wooden tower that has become a defining landmark for the community. The current lighthouse was built in 1959, replacing earlier structures that guided ships through Bonne Bay. The lighthouse is perched on a grassy knoll, offering panoramic views of the bay and the surrounding mountains.

We climbed the winding stairs to the top of the lighthouse, where we were rewarded with breathtaking views. The sun was beginning to set, casting a golden glow over the water and the colorful houses of Woody Point. I imagined the countless sailors who had relied on this beacon to guide them safely home.

The Woody Point Lighthouse is more than just a navigational aid; it's a symbol of the town's history and resilience. Woody Point was once a bustling center of commerce, but a major fire in 1922 destroyed much of the town. Despite this setback, the community persevered, and today, Woody Point is a vibrant tourist destination known for its natural beauty and cultural attractions.

Shopping for Souvenirs

Before leaving Woody Point, we stopped at Coyley's General Store, a local institution. Although I couldn't find a Coyley's in Woody Point specifically, I did find one in Rocky Harbour and Wiltondale. These stores are known for their eclectic mix of items, from groceries to local crafts and souvenirs. I picked up a handcrafted wooden ornament shaped like a puffin, while Klaus found a book about the geology of Gros Morne. It was the perfect way to support local artisans and take a piece of Newfoundland home with us.

Evening Reflections

As we drove back to our cabin, the sky was ablaze with color. The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the clouds in hues of orange, pink, and purple. We reflected on the day's adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the unique beauty of Gros Morne National Park.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Port au Choix National Historic Site and embark on another adventure with Gros Morne Adventures [cite: null]. I'm also looking forward to trying some local cuisine at The Old Loft Restaurant or Java Jack's Restaurant & Gallery [cite: null]. And perhaps, we'll end the day with a drink at Rudy's Gas Bar and Pub [cite: null].

Back at our cabin, we brewed a pot of tea and snuggled up by the fire. The wind howled outside, but we were warm and content, filled with memories of our walk on another planet. It's moments like these that make traveling so rewarding, reminding us of the beauty and wonder that exists in our world. It reminds me of something Bob Dylan said, A person is a success if they get up in the morning and gets to bed at night and in between does what he wants to do. And tomorrow, I intend to continue doing just that.

As I drift off to sleep, I can't help but feel a sense of anticipation for tomorrow's adventures. Gros Morne has a way of captivating the soul, and I know that our journey here is far from over. Good night from Newfoundland!

P.S. I really need to remember that portable phone charger for tomorrow!
