A Day of Discoveries in Gerês

Today was a day of pure, unadulterated immersion into the heart of Peneda-Gerês National Park. Klaus and I set out with a sense of adventure, eager to uncover some of the park's hidden gems. The crisp October air, with temperatures ranging from a high of 20°C to a low of 10°C, was invigorating. I was glad I had packed layers, as the breezy conditions made it feel a bit cooler at times. We knew we were in for a treat, but the reality far exceeded our expectations.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at RESTAURANTE VIDEIRA. I had read about their traditional Portuguese dishes, prepared in a healthy and flavorful way, and I was eager to try them. We enjoyed a simple yet satisfying meal of fresh bread, local cheese, and strong coffee, fueling up for the day’s adventures. It’s always a pleasure to start the day with a good meal; it sets the tone for everything that follows.

Cascata da Rajada: A Hidden Paradise

Our first stop was the majestic Cascata da Rajada. The drive there was scenic, with winding roads offering glimpses of the park's stunning landscapes. We parked near Aldeia da Ermida and embarked on a short but rewarding hike to the waterfall. The trail was easy to moderate, perfect for a morning stroll. As we approached, the sound of rushing water grew louder, building anticipation for the sight that awaited us. The waterfall itself was a sight to behold, cascading down into a crystal-clear lagoon. The water was inviting, but a bit too chilly for a swim this time of year. I could imagine how refreshing it would be on a hot summer afternoon!

We spent some time simply admiring the natural beauty, taking photos and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the power and grace of nature. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love traveling and exploring new places. The sunlight filtering through the trees, the sound of the water, and the fresh air created a truly magical experience.

Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.

Prado da Messe: A Serene Meadow

Next on our itinerary was Prado da Messe, a beautiful mountain meadow known for its serene landscapes. The drive from Cascata da Rajada took us through winding mountain roads, each turn revealing breathtaking vistas. When we arrived at Prado da Messe, we were greeted by a vast expanse of green, surrounded by rolling hills and rocky outcrops. It was the perfect spot for a leisurely lunch.

We had packed a picnic with local delicacies from In Rio - Vestuário e Acessórios, a charming shop we stumbled upon earlier in the day. Though primarily a clothing store, they also offered a selection of regional products, including artisanal bread, cheese, and smoked meats. We found a cozy spot on a grassy knoll and enjoyed our picnic, savoring the flavors of Portugal while taking in the stunning scenery. Klaus, ever the architect, was fascinated by the traditional stone houses scattered across the meadow, remnants of the area's pastoral past. I, of course, was captivated by the vibrant flora, making mental notes of the various plant species to possibly incorporate into my Heidelberg garden.

Penedo do Tanque: A Rocky Outcrop

Our final stop for the day was Penedo do Tanque, a unique rocky outcrop offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. After our relaxing lunch at Prado da Messe, we drove a short distance to the trailhead. The hike to Penedo do Tanque was a bit more challenging than our morning trek to the waterfall, but the views from the top were well worth the effort.

As we ascended, the landscape transformed, with rocky terrain and sparse vegetation replacing the lush greenery of the meadow. Reaching the summit, we were rewarded with a 360-degree view of Peneda-Gerês National Park. The park stretched out before us in all its glory, a tapestry of mountains, forests, and valleys. I felt a sense of accomplishment, having conquered the challenging climb, and a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to witness such natural beauty. Klaus and I spent a few moments simply taking in the view, etching the memory into our minds.

A Culinary Conclusion

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Espreita for dinner. This restaurant, nestled in the heart of Gerês National Park, is known for its traditional Portuguese cuisine and cozy atmosphere. We started with a selection of local cheeses and olives, followed by a hearty stew made with tender beef and root vegetables. The flavors were rich and comforting, the perfect end to a day spent exploring the great outdoors. Klaus paired our meal with a robust red wine from the Douro Valley, a perfect complement to the hearty fare. We chatted about our adventures, reminiscing about our favorite moments from the day. It’s these shared experiences that make our travels so special.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we enjoyed a leisurely stroll through the village of Gerês, soaking in the peaceful ambiance of the evening. The stars twinkled above us, and the air was filled with the sounds of nature. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Reserva de la Biosfera Transfronteriza Gerês-Xurés, Igreja Nossa Senhora do Carmo and Fonte do Paço. I’m particularly excited about visiting the biosphere reserve, as it promises more stunning landscapes and unique ecosystems. Klaus is eager to see the Igreja Nossa Senhora do Carmo, drawn to its historical and architectural significance. And, if we have time, we might even stop by Stand Up Gerês for a nightcap.

As I reflect on our day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore the natural wonders of Peneda-Gerês National Park. It’s a place of breathtaking beauty, where nature and human activity coexist in harmony. I highly recommend a visit to anyone seeking adventure, tranquility, and a deeper connection with the natural world. And who knows, maybe I’ll even find some inspiration for my garden back in Heidelberg!
