Discovering the Heart of Gerês National Park

Today marked the beginning of our adventure in Peneda-Gerês National Park, and what a start it was! Klaus and I were eager to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of Portugal, and the park certainly didn't disappoint. From panoramic viewpoints to cascading waterfalls and inviting lagoons, every moment was a feast for the senses. It felt wonderful to escape our busy lives in Heidelberg and reconnect with nature. I was especially excited to put my hiking boots to good use and capture the stunning landscapes with my camera.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Casa Albelo do Gerês. The reviews I had read online were spot on; the breakfast was indeed of extraordinary quality and taste. We enjoyed fresh eggs, fruits, and a variety of local breads and cheeses while soaking in the quiet, remote atmosphere. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. I even managed to practice a few German idioms with Klaus, a habit he finds both amusing and endearing.

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set off to our first destination: Miradouro de Junceda. The drive itself was a treat, with winding roads offering glimpses of the park's stunning landscapes. As we approached the viewpoint, the anticipation grew. The last stretch involved a drive on a 2.5 km dirt road, which was manageable.

Reaching Miradouro de Junceda, I was immediately struck by the panoramic vista. From 915 meters high, we could see the entire Gerês river valley, from the mountain peaks to the Caniçada reservoir. The view was simply breathtaking, a sweeping panorama of lush green valleys and rugged mountains. I felt a sense of tranquility wash over me, a reminder of the simple beauty of nature. Klaus, ever the architect, was captivated by the way the landscape unfolded before us, pointing out the geological formations and the way the light played across the valley.

After soaking in the views at Miradouro de Junceda, we continued our journey to Cascata do Arado. The drive to the waterfall was scenic, passing through the village of Ermida. A short walk from the parking area led us to a bridge over the Rio Arado. From there, we had two options: climb to the miradouro for a top-down view or boulder-hop our way upriver to the base of the falls. We chose the former, ascending the signposted staircase to the viewpoint. The climb was manageable, and the view from the top was well worth the effort. The waterfall cascaded down the rocky cliffs, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. I took numerous photos, trying to capture the beauty of the scene. The sound of the rushing water was invigorating, and the scent of the forest filled the air.

I learned that while swimming isn't recommended directly at the falls due to slippery rocks, the area is popular for extreme sports. We kept a safe distance, mindful of the power of nature. As we explored the area around the bridge, I made sure to remember my promise to myself to leave no trace behind, remembering that the Arado Waterfall is located within the protected area of the Peneda-Gerês National Park.

Our final stop for the day was Poço da Gola, a lagoon near Parada known for its refreshing waters. After our hikes, the idea of a swim was incredibly appealing. The lagoon is easily accessible, with a short walk from the parking area. The water was cool and clear, perfect for a refreshing dip. I felt rejuvenated as I swam in the natural pool, surrounded by the serene landscape. Klaus, who usually prefers admiring nature from afar, even joined me for a quick swim. I can imagine that this place can get crowded during the high season because it is so easily accessible.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Restaurante Fojo dos Lobos for lunch. The restaurant is known for its authentic Trasmontana cuisine. Klaus ordered the Posta Barrosã, while I opted for the Bacalhau de Cebolada. Both dishes were delicious, showcasing the fresh, local ingredients of the region. The cozy atmosphere and friendly service added to the experience. I overheard Klaus trying out some Portuguese phrases he had learned, much to the amusement of the staff.

For dinner, we chose O Abocanhado, a restaurant known for its regional cuisine and stunning location in the Serra Amarela. The restaurant's design, nestled into the surrounding slate, was impressive. We enjoyed tender Barrosã steak while taking in panoramic views of the Rio Homem valley. For dessert, I couldn't resist trying the Pudim do Abade de Priscos, an egg-and-almond pudding.

To cap off our first day, we decided to visit Pirata Do Gerês, a bar in Gerês. The bar is known for its charming ambiance and stunning views. We enjoyed a couple of local drinks while soaking in the lively atmosphere. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring. The bar is in an old house, and the atmosphere was very welcoming. I chatted with Bernardo, who was multilingual and very friendly.

As I reflect on our first day in Peneda-Gerês National Park, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience such natural beauty. From the panoramic views at Miradouro de Junceda to the refreshing waters of Poço da Gola and the delicious meals at Restaurante Fojo dos Lobos and O Abocanhado, every moment was a treasure. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures, which include visiting Cascatas de Fecha de Barjas (or Cascatas do Tahiti), hiking the Trilho da Preguiça, and taking in the views from Miradouro da Preguiça. I am also looking forward to visiting the Loja do Parque, as I forgot to bring sunscreen and a portable phone charger, and I am hoping to find them there.

Before drifting off to sleep, I recall a quote that perfectly encapsulates the essence of today's journey:

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

Good night from Gerês! I can't wait to share more of our adventures with you tomorrow. The weather in October is mild, but there is a chance of rain, so I'll be sure to pack accordingly. The average high is 20°C, and the average low is 10°C.

It's moments like these that remind me why I love travel so much. Until tomorrow!
