Savoring Montepulciano: A Day of Wine, Views, and Gardens
Today was a day of pure Tuscan indulgence, a perfect blend of sensory delights that left me utterly charmed by Montepulciano. From the rolling vineyards to breathtaking vistas and serene gardens, every moment felt like a scene from a classic Italian film. Klaus and I savored every sip, every view, and every fragrant bloom.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Caffè Poliziano. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingled with the sweet scent of pastries, creating an irresistible invitation. This historic café, with its elegant Belle Époque style, is a true gem. We sat by the window, enjoying cappuccinos and cornettos while soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of Montepulciano waking up. It felt like stepping back in time, surrounded by ornate mirrors and wooden paneling that whispered stories of famous writers, movie stars and musicians who had graced this very spot. I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to the rich cultural heritage of Italy.
Wine is bottled poetry.
Fueled by caffeine and anticipation, our next stop was the renowned Icario Winery. The drive there was a feast for the eyes, with vineyards stretching as far as the eye could see, basking in the warm Tuscan sun. Icario itself is a stunning blend of modern design and traditional winemaking practices. We embarked on a fascinating tour led by a knowledgeable sommelier who shared insights into the winemaking process, from grape to bottle. The state-of-the-art cellar was impressive, a testament to Icario's commitment to innovation. And then, the tasting! We sampled a diverse selection of Icario's wines, including their acclaimed Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Each sip was a revelation, a symphony of flavors that danced on my palate. The rich, complex notes of cherry and plum, with hints of earth and spice, were simply divine. Klaus, ever the connoisseur, was particularly impressed by the structure and depth of the wines. I found myself appreciating the art and science that goes into creating such liquid perfection. As a horticultural consultant, I was particularly interested in the vineyard's sustainable practices. It's heartening to see a winery so dedicated to preserving the environment while producing exceptional wines.

After our delightful wine tasting, we made our way to the Belvedere di Santa Maria, a viewpoint offering panoramic vistas of the Tuscan countryside. The view was nothing short of breathtaking. Rolling hills dotted with cypress trees, charming farmhouses, and vineyards bathed in golden sunlight – it was a picture-postcard scene come to life. I felt a sense of awe and tranquility wash over me, a reminder of the simple beauty of nature. Klaus, with his architect's eye, admired the way the landscape blended seamlessly with the architectural elements of the town. We spent a good hour there, simply soaking in the view and capturing the moment with our cameras. It's moments like these that make traveling so rewarding, when you can pause and appreciate the sheer beauty of the world around you.

For lunch, we chose Ristorante degli Archi, drawn in by its charming location and promise of traditional Tuscan cuisine. However, upon arrival, we discovered that it was closed. Apparently, it had closed its doors back in 2020. A bit disappointing, but that's travel, isn't it? Always an adventure! Instead, we stumbled upon a delightful little Trattoria nearby that served the most delicious Pici pasta with wild boar ragu. It was a hearty, flavorful dish that perfectly captured the essence of Tuscan cuisine. We savored every bite, accompanied by a glass of local red wine, of course. It was a reminder that sometimes the best experiences are the ones you don't plan.
In the afternoon, we sought refuge from the sun at Parco VillaTrecci, a haven of tranquility just a few kilometers from Montepulciano. This eco-sustainable garden is a true labor of love, a testament to the owners' dream of creating a Mediterranean paradise. As we strolled through the park, we were enveloped in a symphony of scents and colors. The garden is home to nearly four hundred different species of plants, each carefully chosen for its beauty and resilience. I was particularly drawn to the garden of grey plants, their silvery foliage shimmering in the sunlight. The park also features a rose garden, a large grass bed, and a serene lake with aquatic plants. It's a place where you can reconnect with nature and find inner peace. I could easily spend hours wandering through its winding paths, discovering new botanical treasures at every turn. Apparently, there are often art events, exhibitions and concerts held in the park, but today it was simply a place for quiet contemplation.

Before dinner, we popped into Pane E Tulipani, a charming shop in Montepulciano. I was hoping to find some unique fashion accessories. The shop was a treasure trove of artisanal crafts, clothing, and jewelry. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-painted silk scarf, a perfect souvenir to remind me of our time in Montepulciano. Klaus, meanwhile, found a stylish leather belt, a testament to his appreciation for quality craftsmanship.

As evening approached, we made our way to Osteria del Borgo for dinner. This osteria, nestled in the heart of Montepulciano's Piazza Grande, is housed in a historic building dating back to 1270. We were seated on the panoramic terrace, offering breathtaking views of the Val d'Orcia hills and the Temple of San Biagio. The menu featured traditional Tuscan dishes, prepared with fresh, local ingredients. We started with a tagliere of Tuscan cold cuts and pecorino cheese from Pienza, followed by the Pici pasta with aglione sauce. For our main courses, Klaus chose the Chianina beef stew, while I opted for the roasted rabbit with herbs. Every dish was a celebration of Tuscan flavors, simple yet exquisite. We paired our meal with a bottle of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, a perfect complement to the rich, hearty cuisine. The service was warm and attentive, making us feel like honored guests. As we savored our meal, we watched the sun set over the Tuscan hills, painting the sky in hues of orange, pink, and purple. It was a magical moment, a perfect ending to a perfect day.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Riserva Naturale Lucciola Bella, followed by a visit to the iconic Cipressi di Monticchiello and Piazza Grande. I'm particularly excited to see the cypress trees, which I've admired in countless photographs. And of course, we'll be sure to find a cozy spot for an evening glass of wine at E Lucevan le Stelle - Wine Bar Bistro.
Today was a reminder of why I love traveling so much. It's about discovering new places, experiencing different cultures, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. And it's about sharing those experiences with the people you love. As Klaus and I walked back to our accommodation, hand in hand, I felt a sense of gratitude for this incredible journey we're on. Tuscany, you have stolen my heart!
This trip to Montepulciano is a wonderful opportunity to recharge and explore a region steeped in history and beauty. It's a welcome break from my horticultural work in Heidelberg, allowing me to immerse myself in the Italian way of life and gather inspiration for future blog posts. As the German saying goes, Alles hat ein Ende, nur die Wurst hat zwei (Everything has an end, only the sausage has two). But I hope that our Tuscan adventure will never end!
As I sit here, penning down my thoughts, I can't help but smile. Today was a good day, a day filled with Tuscan delights that I will cherish forever.
