Wine and Wanderlust in Douro Valley
Day 3: A Valley of Views and Vintage: Discovering Douro's Delights
Experience the breathtaking panoramas of Miradouro Casal de Loivos and the rich flavors of Fonseca Porto in Douro Valley with Michelle.
Douro's Dance of Delight
Today was a symphony of sights and tastes, a true immersion into the heart of the Douro Valley. Klaus and I set out with open hearts and eager palates, ready to embrace the day's adventures. From panoramic viewpoints to historic wine estates, every moment felt like a page torn from a storybook.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Bistro Terrace - Quinta do Tedo. The Michelin-recommended terrace offered privileged views overlooking the vineyard terraces and the Tedo River. The flavors of local ingredients and traditional Portuguese recipes provided an unforgettable experience. I savored every bite, feeling grateful for the beauty surrounding us. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love exploring new places, especially with Klaus by my side.

After breakfast, we drove to Miradouro Casal De Loivos. The drive itself was an experience, with winding roads that offered glimpses of the Douro's terraced vineyards. As we approached the Miradouro, anticipation bubbled inside me. I had read so much about this viewpoint, and I couldn't wait to see it with my own eyes.
And oh, what a sight it was! The Miradouro Casal De Loivos is perched on a hill overlooking the small village of Pinhão. From the miradouro terrace, you can see mountains beyond the Douro River. The terraced vineyards create a geometrical design. The view was nothing short of breathtaking. The Douro River snaked through the valley, reflecting the clear blue sky. Vineyards stretched as far as the eye could see, a testament to the region's rich winemaking heritage. I felt a sense of awe wash over me, a feeling of being small yet connected to something vast and beautiful. It was easy to see why the BBC declared the views from this spot to be among the six best in the world.

The Douro Valley is a masterpiece painted by nature and sculpted by generations of passionate winemakers.
We spent a good hour at the Miradouro, simply soaking in the scenery. I snapped photos, trying to capture the essence of the moment, but no image could truly do it justice. It was a view that needed to be experienced firsthand, a memory etched in the heart rather than captured on film. As a horticultural consultant, I couldn't help but marvel at the intricate network of terraces, a testament to human ingenuity and harmony with nature.
Next on our itinerary was Quinta do Panascal - Fonseca Porto. This estate is the flagship property of Fonseca. As we drove through the gates, I felt a sense of history and tradition wash over me. The estate has been recognized for the quality of its fruit since the 1700s. We were greeted by a knowledgeable guide who led us through the vineyards, explaining the unique terroir and the meticulous winemaking process.

I learned that Quinta do Panascal has been releasing vintage Port wines for over thirty years. The upper slopes rise about 400 meters above sea level, where the vines are cooled by the wind, producing elegant wines with vibrant acidity. Production follows traditional principles. The grapes are foot-trodden in granite lagares.
The highlight of our visit was, of course, the wine tasting. We sampled several of Fonseca's renowned Ports, each with its own distinct character and flavor profile. From the rich, fruity Vintage Port to the smooth, nutty Tawny, every sip was a revelation. I particularly enjoyed the Fonseca Quinta do Panascal 2008, with its rich plum fruit and sweet spices. Klaus, with his architect's eye for detail, appreciated the craftsmanship and artistry that went into each bottle. We purchased a bottle of the Vintage Port, a memento of our visit and a promise of future celebrations.
For lunch, we ventured to Toca da Raposa, a restaurant nestled in the heart of the village of Ervedosa. The restaurant is located next to the N-222 road that winds through the Douro Valley. The journey to the restaurant was a delight, with picturesque views. Toca da Raposa offers homemade Portuguese cuisine. The restaurant has an excellent wine selection and friendly service. I savored the roasted pork leg accompanied by potatoes.

In the late afternoon, we sought out Petiscaria Douro Bar for a relaxing drink. The bar offers great Portuguese traditional food with an affordable price. You can have lunch or dinner with views of the Douro River. The Bifana pairs well with Bermester Tinto.

As evening approached, we made our way to Veladouro for dinner. This restaurant is located by the Pinhão docks. It's a place to enjoy fresh traditional food with fast and friendly service. The restaurant has a terrace overlooking the vineyards and river. The excellent recipes of Veladouro have been prized in gastronomic contests. I enjoyed the grilled salmon with potatoes and fresh vegetables.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that the Douro Valley is more than just a wine region; it's a place where nature, history, and culture intertwine to create a truly unique experience. It's a place where you can lose yourself in the beauty of the landscape, savor the flavors of the local cuisine, and connect with the people who call this valley home.

Back at our Gaia Residence, I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment. The Douro Valley had cast its spell on me, and I knew that this was a place I would never forget.
