Family Adventure in Luxor: Exploring Ancient Egypt
Day 4: Exploring Luxor's West Bank: A Journey Through Time
Uncover the secrets of Deir el-Bahari and the Tombs of the Nobles in Luxor, Egypt. Experience ancient history with family.
Echoes of Eternity in Luxor's West Bank
Today, Fatima, Omar and I ventured into the heart of ancient Thebes, exploring the West Bank of Luxor. It was a day filled with awe-inspiring monuments, intricate tombs, and a profound sense of connection to the past. The memories we created today will undoubtedly be etched in our minds forever.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Gerda's Garden. The open-air setting, with the Nile gently flowing nearby, was the perfect way to start our explorations. The kids enjoyed the fresh fruit and pastries, while Fatima and I savored traditional Egyptian coffee. It felt like a little slice of Germany right here in Luxor.

After breakfast, we set off towards Deir el-Bahari, the mortuary temple complex. As we approached, the Temple of Hatshepsut emerged from the desert landscape, a magnificent structure built into the cliffs. Its grandeur was simply breathtaking. Omar was immediately curious about the female pharaoh, Hatshepsut, and her unique place in Egyptian history. I tried my best to explain how she defied convention and ruled Egypt with power and grace.

Wandering through the terraces of the temple, we admired the colonnaded structure and the intricate reliefs depicting Hatshepsut's reign. The sheer scale of the temple, combined with the backdrop of the towering cliffs, created a truly awe-inspiring sight. Fatima pointed out the chapel dedicated to Hathor, the goddess of love and motherhood, reminding us of the importance of family and feminine strength in ancient Egyptian culture. The sun was strong, a reminder to keep hydrated – I was glad I had remembered to bring the sunscreen, even though I had forgotten an extra memory card for my camera!
The stones whisper stories of pharaohs, gods, and the enduring human spirit.
Leaving Deir el-Bahari, we made our way to the Tombs of the Nobles. This site offered a different perspective on ancient Egyptian life. Unlike the grand royal tombs, these tombs belonged to administrators, governors, and other figures of minor nobility. The decorations depicted scenes of everyday life, offering a glimpse into the concerns and activities of ordinary people.

We explored several tombs, each with its unique charm. The vibrant colors and detailed scenes brought the past to life. Omar was fascinated by the depictions of farming, fishing, and other daily tasks. It was a refreshing change from the more formal and religious imagery of the royal tombs. Fatima appreciated the artistry and the sense of connection to the people who lived here thousands of years ago.
By lunchtime, we were ready for a break. We headed to El Hussein Restaurant, recommended by a local. The restaurant was bustling with activity, and the aroma of Egyptian spices filled the air. We ordered a variety of dishes, including tagine and stuffed pigeon. The food was delicious and authentic, providing a true taste of Egyptian cuisine. It was great to experience a restaurant away from the usual tourist spots.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to take a break from sightseeing and relax at our hotel, the Iberotel Luxor. The kids were eager to take a dip in the pool, and Fatima and I were happy to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. We spent a couple of hours lounging by the pool, enjoying the warm sunshine and the beautiful views of the Nile.

After dinner, while Fatima and Omar went back to the hotel, I decided to experience a bit of Luxor's nightlife. I headed to the Royal Bar, located in the Winter Palace Hotel. The bar exuded an old-world charm, with its Victorian-style decor and elegant ambiance. I ordered a cocktail and enjoyed the live piano music, soaking in the atmosphere of this historic establishment. It was a fitting end to a day filled with history, culture, and family fun.

Reflecting on our experiences today, I am struck by the richness and depth of Luxor's history. From the grand temples to the intimate tombs, every site tells a story. I am grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family and to create memories that will last a lifetime.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore KV17 - Tomb of Seti I and the Mummification Museum [Museum][s]. I'm particularly excited about the Mummification Museum, as it will provide a fascinating insight into the ancient Egyptian beliefs about death and the afterlife. Before that though, we'll have breakfast at Mamma Mia! Luxor, followed by lunch at Kaya Restoz and dinner at Silk Road. We'll also visit the Luxor Fruit and Vegetable Market, a great opportunity to immerse ourselves in the local culture and sample some fresh produce.
Today, November 4th, is also the National Day of Luxor Governorate, celebrating the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb. It feels special to be here during this time, surrounded by so much history and culture. It is a privilege to explore these ancient sites and share the wonders of Luxor with my family. I encourage everyone to visit this extraordinary destination and experience the magic of ancient Egypt for themselves.
I am also reminded of a quote I once read by Ibn Battuta:
Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.
Indeed, Luxor has left me speechless, and I am eager to continue sharing my stories with you all.
As I sit here writing this blog post, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and wonder. Luxor is a truly special place, and I am so glad that I had the opportunity to experience it with my family. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
Until next time,
Mohamed.
