Towers of Time

Today was all about reaching new heights, both literally and figuratively, as we explored the famed towers of San Gimignano. After settling into Hotel Leon Bianco yesterday, I was eager to immerse my family in the rich history and stunning views this medieval town has to offer. Omar was especially excited, imagining himself as a knight defending a castle, while Fatima and I looked forward to capturing some memorable photos and savoring the local cuisine.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Olivieri Bistrot. The aroma of freshly baked pastries and strong Italian coffee filled the air, setting a perfect tone for our adventures. Fatima chose a classic cappuccino, while Omar devoured a chocolate-filled croissant. I opted for a simple yet satisfying espresso, gearing up for the day's explorations.

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set out to conquer the towers. First on our list was Torre dei Cugnanesi. As we approached, the tower's imposing structure loomed over us, a testament to the power and influence of the Cugnanesi family in the 13th century. I read somewhere that it is one of the oldest and tallest towers in San Gimignano, dating back to the 13th century. Its location near the Arco dei Becci was strategically important, forming part of the town's defensive system. Omar peppered me with questions about knights and battles, his imagination running wild as he envisioned the tower under siege.

Next, we ventured towards Torre Rognosa, also known as the Torre dell'Orologio or Torre del Podestà. This tower is the oldest in the city, built around 1200, and stands proudly in Piazza del Duomo. I learned that it once served as a prison, hence the name Rognosa, which means a place of trouble or problems. The history of the tower is fascinating, and its role in the civic life of San Gimignano is undeniable. Fatima was particularly intrigued by the story of how the tower was used to warn the inhabitants of impending danger, a function that highlighted its significance in the community.

Our final tower of the day was Torre dei Becci, located near the ancient Arc of Becci. The Becci family, prominent merchants during San Gimignano's golden age, held significant public positions, and their tower stands as a symbol of their influence. The tower itself boasts a simple yet striking appearance, with a square base and rare slit openings that provide a glimpse into its interior. Omar was fascinated by the narrow slits, imagining them as arrow slits for archers defending the city.

As we walked from tower to tower, the June sun warmed our faces, and a gentle breeze swept through the narrow streets. The weather was perfect for exploring, with temperatures hovering around 27°C during the day and a comfortable 16°C at night. I was glad I had packed sunglasses and sunscreen, remembering the essentials I had diligently prepared before our trip. However, I did feel a pang of annoyance that I had forgotten the travel adapter and umbrella. I made a mental note to buy a travel adapter tomorrow, as it will be essential for charging our devices.

For lunch, we decided to try Perucà, a restaurant known for its authentic Tuscan cuisine. The restaurant is located away from the main tourist traffic, offering a cozy and intimate dining experience. Fatima ordered the house specialty, fagottini del contadino, ravioli with pecorino, pears, saffron, and cream, and paired it with a glass of Fattoria San Donato’s Vernaccia. I opted for the Florentine steak, cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. Omar, as usual, chose a simple pasta dish, which he devoured with gusto. The food was excellent, and the ambiance was perfect for a relaxing midday meal.

After lunch, we took a leisurely stroll through the town, soaking in the sights and sounds of San Gimignano. The town was bustling with activity, and I noticed a few artisan shops selling local crafts and souvenirs. I also spotted a gelateria and couldn't resist treating Omar to a scoop of his favorite flavor, pistachio. As we walked, I couldn't help but marvel at the town's well-preserved medieval architecture and its unique skyline, dotted with towering structures that seemed to reach for the heavens.

In the late afternoon, we sought refuge from the sun at Divinorum Wine Bar. The wine bar offers a stunning panoramic view of the surrounding countryside, making it the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy a glass of local wine. I chose a crisp Vernaccia, while Fatima opted for a refreshing prosecco. Omar, of course, settled for a glass of sparkling apple juice. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, and we struck up a conversation with a couple from England who were also visiting San Gimignano. We shared travel stories and tips, and I felt a sense of camaraderie with these fellow travelers.

As evening approached, we made our way to Osteria Delle Catene for dinner. This osteria is known for its traditional Tuscan dishes and its warm, welcoming atmosphere. I had read about their delicious truffle pasta and wild boar tagliatelle. We started with a selection of local cheeses and cured meats, followed by the ribollita, a hearty vegetable soup that warmed us from the inside out. For our main courses, Fatima chose the pici with cacio e pepe, while I opted for the Chianti-stewed beef. Omar, always a fan of pasta, ordered the pappardelle with ragu. The food was exceptional, and the service was attentive and friendly.

During dinner, we discussed our plans for tomorrow. According to the itinerary, we will be visiting the Palazzo Comunale, Pinacoteca, Torre Grossa, Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta, and Viewpoint San Gimignano. We will also have breakfast at Giardino Bistrot, lunch at La Mandragola, and dinner at Ristorante San Martino 26. Additionally, we plan to visit Beconcini Tuscan Handmade, a local shop. I am particularly excited about visiting the Torre Grossa, the tallest tower in San Gimignano, and seeing the Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta, known for its stunning frescoes.

Before heading back to the hotel, we took one last stroll through the town, enjoying the cool night air and the twinkling lights that illuminated the medieval streets. San Gimignano at night is a magical place, and I felt grateful to be sharing this experience with my family.

Back at Hotel Leon Bianco, I sat down to write this blog post, reflecting on the day's adventures. Today was a day filled with history, culture, and delicious food. From the imposing towers to the cozy osterias, San Gimignano had captured our hearts and imaginations. I am already looking forward to tomorrow's explorations, eager to discover even more of what this enchanting town has to offer. I am also thrilled that the Ferie delle Messi, a traditional medieval festival, will be taking place later this week. I read that it involves historical processions, games, and competitions between the town's districts, and I hope we will have the opportunity to witness some of the festivities.

As I sign off for the night, I am reminded of the importance of travel and the joy of experiencing new cultures with loved ones. San Gimignano is a place that will stay with me long after we have left, a reminder of the beauty and wonder that can be found in the most unexpected corners of the world. Tomorrow, we scale new heights—literally and figuratively—as we delve deeper into the heart of this Tuscan gem. Goodnight from San Gimignano!
