Discover the serene beauty of Western Brook Pond and the historic charm of Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse in Gros Morne National Park.
A Day of Serenity and Discovery
Today was a day of exploration and tranquility, perfectly encapsulating the serene beauty of Gros Morne National Park. From cruising on a glacial fjord to exploring a historic lighthouse, every moment felt like a step deeper into the heart of Newfoundland's natural wonders. It's days like these that remind me why I started this solo journey in the first place – to immerse myself in the quiet grandeur of nature and find a sense of peace away from the hustle of daily life.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Oceans Room Resturant in Rocky Harbour. The restaurant was conveniently located, and I was able to enjoy a classic breakfast with a view of the harbor. It's always a pleasure to start the day with a good meal and a beautiful vista, setting the tone for the adventures ahead.
After breakfast, I headed north to Western Brook Pond. The drive itself was scenic, with the rugged landscape of Gros Morne unfolding around every bend. Upon arrival, I embarked on the 2.7-kilometer trail leading to the pond. The trail was well-maintained, a mix of gravel and boardwalk, making for an easy and enjoyable hike. The surrounding bogs and forested ridges added to the charm, with interpretive signs providing insights into the area's natural features.
Reaching Western Brook Pond was like stepping into another world. The pond, a landlocked fjord carved by glaciers, was framed by billion-year-old cliffs rising dramatically from the water. Waterfalls cascaded down these cliffs, some so high that they turned to mist before reaching the pond. The scene was nothing short of breathtaking.

I decided to take the Western Brook Pond Boat Tour, a two-hour cruise that promised a closer look at this natural wonder. As the boat glided across the pristine waters, the immensity of the cliffs became even more apparent. The guide provided live interpretation, sharing fascinating details about the geology and history of the area. I learned that the pond is home to Atlantic Salmon, Brook Trout, and Arctic Char, and that the waters are so pure they are classified as ultraoligotrophic.
The beauty of Western Brook Pond lies not just in its dramatic landscape, but in the profound sense of peace it instills.
One of the highlights of the tour was seeing Pissing Mare Falls, one of the highest waterfalls in eastern North America. The water plunged from a height of 350 meters, creating a spectacle of raw natural power. I spent much of the cruise with my camera in hand, trying to capture the grandeur of the scene, though no photograph could truly do it justice.
After the boat tour, I hiked the 1.8-kilometer side loop to reach the banks of Western Brook, offering a different perspective of the area. The quiet solitude of the trail allowed me to reflect on the morning's experience, appreciating the unique beauty of this corner of the world.
For lunch, I stopped by Fisherman's Landing Restaurant in Rocky Harbour. I opted for a traditional Newfoundland meal, enjoying the cozy atmosphere and warm hospitality. It was a satisfying break before the afternoon's adventures. I chose the pan fried cod, which was delicious. It reminded me of Fatima's cooking back home. I must try to recreate it when I get back to Bielefeld.
In the afternoon, I visited Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse. The lighthouse, built in 1897, stands as a beacon overlooking the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The drive to the lighthouse was picturesque, with views of the coastline and the charming town of Rocky Harbour.

I explored the Lobster Cove Head cultural exhibit, housed in the keeper's dwelling. The exhibit showcased the history of the lighthouse and the lives of the lightkeepers and their families. It was fascinating to learn about the challenges they faced and the vital role they played in guiding ships safely through these waters. One wall of the exhibit was dedicated to the keepers of Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse, and one room showed how the residence was furnished when occupied by the keepers.
After touring the exhibit, I walked the trails surrounding the lighthouse. The trails led to coastal environments and tuckamore forests, offering stunning views of the ocean. I found a spot to sit and watch the waves crashing against the rocky shore, the salty air invigorating my senses. Lobster Cove Head is also known as the perfect spot to enjoy sunsets and an ideal place for photographers who are looking to capture the moment. Even on a stormy day, it's an epic place to watch crashing waves. I kept an eye out for whales, as the area is known for whale watching.
Before dinner, I decided to treat myself to something sweet at Aunt Sarah's Chocolate Shop in Rocky Harbour. The shop had a warm, old-fashioned charm, and the aroma of homemade chocolates was irresistible. I sampled a few treats, finally settling on a selection of truffles and caramels. It was the perfect indulgence to cap off a day of exploration.

For dinner, I chose Anchor Pub, located right on the Rocky Harbour waterfront. The pub offered a relaxed atmosphere and a menu of pub-style delicacies. I enjoyed a hearty meal of fish and chips while watching the sunset over the ocean. The pub also features live entertainment, but tonight I was content to simply enjoy the view and the peaceful ambiance. The Anchors Aweigh Band play here, but not tonight.

As I reflect on the day, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty of Gros Morne National Park. From the serene waters of Western Brook Pond to the historic charm of Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse, every moment was a reminder of the natural wonders that surround us. Tomorrow, I plan to hike the Gros Morne Mountain Hiking Trail and visit the Green Point Geological Site, eager for more adventures in this remarkable landscape. It will be a tough hike, but I am looking forward to the challenge. I think I will need another hearty breakfast to start the day.
Back at my campsite, I made sure to double-check my gear for tomorrow's hike, especially since I realized I had forgotten insect repellent and sunscreen. It's a lesson learned – even in October, the elements can be unpredictable. As I zipped up my tent and settled in for the night, I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment. This solo adventure is turning out to be everything I had hoped for and more. I wonder what Fatima and Omar are doing right now? I hope they are well. I miss them, but I know this journey is important for me, and I will return to them refreshed and full of stories to share.
